with the education discount, you can still get a new in box ibook G3, 900 MHz, Combo, 128 MB, 40 GB, for only $799.
i'm considering this, but can't decide on this or an ibook G4 12" 800mhz for $999 with the edu discount. is it worth the extra $200 to go for the G4? i plan on doing lots of stuff for school like word processing, spreadsheets, etc and internet surfing, but nothing really taxing.

Agreed. The iBook G4 800MHz was rated very well by Macworld.

No question, the G4 is worth the extra $200. No question whatsoever.

Does anyone else see the irony in this comment?

well there are no portables with the g5 just yet

besides the g3 was in portables when the g4 was the flagship proc of apple

so it would still make sense that the g4 would remain in ibooks when the g5 becomes the flagship
