View Full Version : Enable Emoji for everyone

UPDATE: Emoji is available in Cydia.
UPDATE: Method to use Emoji without jailbreak: http://designer.dlinkddns.com/blog/?p=107
You need to edit the file /User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preferences.plist on the device -> whether you use a jailbreak to achieve this or merely some iTunes backup editor is up to you.
Add the following boolean key as 'true':
KeyboardEmojiEverywhere
Then merely go to the Keyboards section of the Settings app, hit Japanese, and turn on Emoji. Will work for any text field/view in the OS, including on websites, AND including the titles of items on SpringBoard (e.g. if you save a bookmark to the home screen).
Have fun!

I think any device that supports emoji characters can see them.
Here are some emojis: (you should be able see these if you are on iPhone, emoji doesn't need to be enabled to view them)

Also, I'm assuming once you edit the itunes backup, that you will have to restore your iphone from that backup to make the changes take effect?

edit--ok, I realize that I didn't put the updated files back into the backup, they were still in the folder I extracted them to. How do I get the new files into the backup?

From what I've read, modifying iTunes backups is no longer possible as they detect any modifications and refuse to restore that part of the backup.

good news for those that do not want to jailbreak their iPhones....
well, sorta....
I didn't want to JB either, but I did to get the emoji, so I did the jail break to get them. However, they remain after a full factory restore and then a restore from backup.
I assume since the installer and cydia apps are no longer there, it is no longer JB'ed.

Yes, because

b) without JB you won't have Cydia installed to activate it this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=605843) way.

Living outside of the box is not for everyone.
I had a first gen iphone that i jailbroke, and experienced lag, crashes, and some other weird stuff. I also started seeing data activity on my account, at times that I knew I wasn't doing anything. Kinda made me start wondering about the source and intent of all the 3rd party stuff I'd placed on my phone and given root access.
Exactly why I am asking for a set of instructions to enable the emoji without jailbreaking my 3g iphone.

It does work, but it's pretty hard to get used to. One false move and you are writing stuff in Japanese. And I couldn't figure out how to get to another row of emoji; I could only access one row. :(

Oh good grief, yuck! That sure is an ugly solution, why go that route when you can JB and have it like it should be, nice interface and all integrated with the keyboard. I appreciate those that don't want stray software on their phones, but just because you jail break doesn't mean you have to install a bunch of crap on there. Just install the Emoji package and be done, you won't even notice that you're jailbroken except for having Cydia installed, and being able to use these wonderful little emoji... :)

If you don't want to install anything on your phone, you can "vanilla" jailbreak, and simply upload a jailbroken firmware with no installers on it, get a program like DiskAid and edit said preference file with that program over USB. If you jailbreak with out installing software/installer applications, pretty much all it does is activate your phone, allow non-signed apps (jailbreak apps) and access to the root partition over USB (Apple already allows USB access to media for iTunes, the jailbreak just modifies the config of the service on the iPhone that facilitates this to allow root filesystem access).

If you're on a legitimate carrier/operator, you can easily update with official updates, it just re-locks the root filesystem and overwrites any changes you've made to it. You'd then need to do it again once the newest software is hacked again. People who jailbreak already need to do this with software updates as it is.
If you don't like to mess with stuff too much, it may be too much hassle. It's doable though.

I've noticed that if you have a custom carrier logo set (a text one, not an image one) with a program like MakeItMine, and also if I manually edit my com.apple.springboard.plist in a jailbroken state, when I backup, restore firmware, and then restore from backup, the custom carrier logo and changes are still present. I wonder if this plist edit will make its way back into a non-jailbroken phone if you:
1. Jailbreak
2. Apply the mod to enable Emoji
3. Backup with iTunes
4. Restore phone in DFU mode to a stock firmware
5. Restore from backup
If so, then people who don't want to jailbreak are good to go, you'll just have to jailbreak and then unjailbreak. Honestly I don't feel like testing this right now though. :p

except that it has still been tampered with, and who knows what files have been put on your phone when it was open, just because the restore locked it again. If the emoji remain after a restore, other files from the jailbreak process probably still reside on your iphone as well.

Backups only backup preferences and app store apps, I think. So as long as you don't use jailbreak apps, you shouldn't have anything odd on your phone after a restore.

glad to help!
Thanks, this works perfectly. Is this all of the Emojii available?

except that it has still been tampered with, and who knows what files have been put on your phone when it was open, just because the restore locked it again. If the emoji remain after a restore, other files from the jailbreak process probably still reside on your iphone as well.
I don't know what you're so afraid of. You say you don't want any file on your phone that hasn't been checked out by Apple for "problems, unknown consequences, or nefarious coding" so you want every bit of code on your phone checked out by Apple. Well, even on stock phones, not every file has been checked out by Apple and not every line of code as been either. There's a lot of copy and paste that goes on when creating something like the iPhone OS from open source projects for things like libc.
Apple can't even check for "nefarious coding" in AppStore apps because the AppStore doesn't require the programmer to send the source along with the binaries for their application. All they can do is debug it, but bad stuff still gets through.
Do you think the iPhone dev team doesn't debug their software? If they didn't, it wouldn't work!
You really have nothing to worry about. Even if something bad DOES go wrong with your phone due to a jailbreak application (which is highly unlikely if you don't install anything but the Emoji thing which just edits a text file) then you can always just restore your phone with iTunes and it will be completely back to normal.
You are being overly paranoid. Overly paranoid people don't get cool things like this on their iPhones. Deal with it.

I had a first generation iphone, which I jailbroke. After that, the phone wasn't nearly as stable, would lock up, lagged, and I would get data connections showing up on my bill at times where I was sleeping and knew I wasn't using the phone. And before you ask, no I didn't have it set up to check for email automatically or anything like that.

and who knows what files have been put on your phone when it was openWhere is this paranoia coming from? People have been running jailbroken iPhones since August of 2007. If there was any "nefarious" content hanging around in Cydia, don't you think you would have heard about it by now?
People, there is ZERO reason not to jailbreak your device. You're not going to break anything. Jailbreak NEVER breaks anything. It is only unlocking that can brick a phone – iPod touch users never have to worry about it.
Does anyone know how to get Emoji support on a Mac or Windows machine?

You installed something else, probably ran a lot of applications in the background and didn't know it, etc. etc.
The key to operating a jailbroken phone "cleanly" is to KEEP IT SIMPLE. Install Cydia, install Five-Icon Dock (I love this), install Emoji support, and stop there. You don't "have" to install a bunch of other things too.

I really don't care if you believe me or not. I did a lot of research before I jailbroke it, and didn't install all that much, and the things I did install were from the installer.app and nowhere else.

"lol." The point is to exercise JUDGEMENT, which you clearly didn't do. I have a multitude of things installed on my device -- StatusNotifier, Terminal, SSH, Firefly, etc. -- because I know how to use them and exercised common sense when I installed them. The result? My phone flies under firmware 2.2 like I left it stock.
You're also talking about a platform which has evolved significantly from what you remember. Lots of things used to break because Installer.app was a piece of crap. Cydia is based on the Debian APT packaging system and works much, much better. The entire jailbroken software ecosystem is much more stable and higher quality than it was -- and even then, it was great provided you knew what you were doing.

Your phone won't slow down if you don't have programs running in the background. Before, on 1.x software, programs HAD to run in the background if they were going to do anything special when not specifically open. One example I'd say would be Taskbar Notifier. It ran in the background so when you got calls and stuff the icons would show up in the status bar. Now, programs use Mobile Substrate, which is sort of a unified background process so to speak. Winterboard uses it, Status Notifier uses it, SBSettings uses it.
My phone runs perfectly fast with these installed:
1. Cydia
2. Winterboard (with a full system theme)
3. Five Icon Dock
4. PdaNet
5. Flashlight
6. Status Notifier
7. OpenSSH
That's all I really want from Cydia, so that's all I install. Most of the people you see talking about their slowed down phones are those who install all sorts of stuff that run in the background, trying to make their phone all leeted out. Keep it simple and be decisive about what you install and don't install, and your phone will be just fine. I ran 2.1 jailbroken with those things installed from the day Pwnage 2.1 was released to the day 2.2 was released and didn't have a single problem. So far, I've been running my 2.2 iPhone 3G jailbroken and have had no problems.
Things to stay away from in you want to avoid problems would be:
1. SIM unlocking the phone
2. Cracked AppStore applications
3. Installer.app
And if you're just that against jailbreaking, then get the heck out of the iPhone hacking section. Seems fair to me.

People had lockup problems, Apple logo of death issues, keyboard lag, and all sorts of bugs and instability on 2.0, 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 whether or not they were jailbroken. When 2.1 came out, it was much more stable, whether or not they jailbroke.
The reason you'd want to jailbreak now that 2.1 and 2.2 are stable is because 2.1 and 2.2 are more stable.

I haven't done a lot of research into jailbreaking the 3g iphone, since the release of the app store pretty much gave me everything I wanted, so I have a couple of questions.
You're saying to avoid the installer.app, but why? Wasn't that the major source of 3rd party apps for the previous iphone? I was under the impression that someone from the dev team made installer.app. How exactly does cydia differ from installer, and what makes it so great?
I have pretty much stayed out of the hacking section of the forums, but have been looking for a non jailbreaking method of getting emoji on the iphone. The mods moved this thread over to the hacking section, so that is why I am here. It seems like there should be some method of enabling emoji on iphones without jailbreaking them. All of the articles I had seen said that there were solutions for jailbroken and non-jailbroken iphones, but I have yet to see instructions for the non jailbreaking method.

Do you sync them from iTunes or SSH them in? Because those methods are fine.
Installous and AppShare will break your phone and you'll have to restore. If it hasn't happened to you yet, it will, believe me. My friends phone ALWAYS gets the apple logo of death from Installous and AppShare. I don't know why he doesn't just sync them from iTunes...

When iPhone OS 2.0 came out, a lot of the inner workings were totally different, so most of the programs that we had for 1.x did not work. They needed to be ported to 2.0. Actually, all programs needed a port of sorts to deal with the fact that 2.0 required signed executables.
Cydia had been around in 1.x but people didn't like it because it was different than what they had and it was fairly unstable. Installer had plenty of apps and was what everyone used.
When 2.0 was jailbroken, Cydia was ported to it and was improved greatly. Meanwhile, RiP Dev was working on an updated version of Installer for iPhone 2.0. RiP Dev bought it from Nullriver, who gave it up to work in the AppStore market. RiP Dev sucks. Installer.app sucks, that's all there is too it.
RiP Dev uses a proprietary packaging system that doesn't deal well with dependancies*, hasn't matured at all, and is inherently flawed in design (because it is not apt ;)) ... wheras Cydia uses apt, which has been around for a decade and has been proven to be an excellent package management system for UNIX based operating systems like the iPhone OS, Debian Linux, and Ubuntu Linux to name a few.
Here are the instructions for the non-jailbroken phone... It is very convoluted and doesn't get you to the actual Emoji keyboard.
http://designer.dlinkddns.com/blog/?p=107
*Dependencies are programs that are required by other programs. For example, Winterboard is dependant on Mobile Substrate. Back in the days on 1.x Installer, you'd get a message saying you need to install Mobile Substrate before you could install Winterboard (this is just an example, neither of those were available on Installer.app) ... so you'd go and install Mobile Substrate, then you could install Winterboard. With apt, you can just go to install Winterboard and apt will find out which other packages it depends on and install them automatically. It also ensures version compatibility among other things.

Oh and BTW - after being non-jailbroken since September (due to major slowdowns with Winterboard) I'm happy to report that everything is working great now! Ok jailbroken with WinterBoard, rotating wallpaper, and StatusNotifier and it feels like I'm still pre-jailbreak. No slowdowns or lag at all. FINALLY!! So, I'd like to thank Apple for forcing me to jailbreak - the assinine restrictions on emoji (for everyone, including those of us living in Japan!) are what drove me to take the plunge this time. Yes. That was due to a bug in the tiff library Safari used. A classic example of some copy paste Apple did while putting Safari for iPhone together.
It was fixed in 1.1.2. So www.jailbreakme.com will only work if you have 1.0.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.2, or 1.1.1.

Well everyone, this is what I did and it worked.
1. I did the Jailbreak with Pwnage and installed Cydia.
2. I searched for the Emoji, installed it, and enabled it through settings/keyboard/Japanese and turn on Emoji.
3. I did a Backup of the phone.
4. DFU restore of the phone with the stock firmware.
5. Restored the phone from the backup.
Once I did this Cydia was gone as the phone is relocked back to stock and Emoji was still enabled!
In conclusion, I did have to momentarily Jailbreak the phone, but it is relocked and nobody knows the better. If you want Emoji, this is definitely the easiest way to get them. :D

All I am doing is breaking into the phone to unlock a feature that was included in the update. Apple put the feature on my phone, taking up space, and felt the need not to let me have it. Why? It's got a setting. Why would Apple think that only the Japanese would enjoy playing with these. Let us all have them without having to do all of this work. How many of yall agree?

Now I'm not saying that everyone is having issues, maybe it's their fault, who knows, but why would I want to jailbreak my phone and risk this, when it has been stable since 2.1?BECAUSE THERE IS NO RISK WHEN ALL YOU ARE DOING IS JAILBREAKING. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BRICK AN IPHONE WITH JAILBREAK. Even if something screws up and the phone becomes unbootable, S-Gold will STILL put the device into DFU mode and you will STILL be able to restore it to factory-new conditions. You are confusing jailbreak "risk" with unlock risk. Even unlocking is no longer risky these days with BootNeuter.
To be fair, the more applications I had installed that depended on Mobile Substrate (QuickGold, etc.), the slower my phone would get, but that was with an older version of Mobile Substrate. That slowdown is gone now.
Does anyone know if it's possible to install support for emoji on Macs or Windows boxes? Linux, even?

Thanks for doing this andyblila! My girlfriend didn't want to jailbreak and she said she'd do it if this were possible! Looks like I have some work to do.
I'm going to secretly do it to my mom's on Thanksgiving. :D She is against hacking too.
Yeah, I'm seriously considering it. I was going to do it earlier, but I have been restoring my phone. I used to have a full 3g signal before the 2.2 update, and now I only have edge, so I have been trying to restore my phone to see if that helped, and also tried downgrading to 2.1, but that gave me a 1013 error (wonder if it's because of the new baseband in 2.2?)
Oh well, I might as well enjoy some emoji on my blazing fast Edge phone. :(

I believe only other people with 2.2 installed (jailbroken or not doesn't matter) will be able to see the emoji's that you send, and vice-versa.

Exactly. On my non-JB 1st Gen iPhone I can see the Emoji in this thread. It works in Safari so I'd imagine it'd work in SMS.

I just thought of a way people could get full Emoji without jailbreaking at all.
Someone will need to do this for it to work:
1. Erase all previous iTunes backups in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
2. DFU restore an iPhone to pwned firmware.
3. Set it up as a new phone in iTunes, name it something generic so people can change it later and so they don't have your info. Kill any sync it might try to do automatically.
4. Use Cydia to install the Emoji package
5. Use iTunes to backup the phone. Right click on it in the left column and hit Backup...
6. Locate the backup in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup and distribute it to people who want to use it.
Then someone who doesn't want to jailbreak could:
1. Erase all backups in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
2. Put the above created backup in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
3. Restore their phone from backup and choose at one
4. Resync all of their data if it was lost such as contacts and email accounts. TXT will probably be gone, I'm not sure.
But yeah, I've also read that the backups are signed so this may not work. We'll have to try it though, obviously.

Doesn't jailbreaking technically void your warranty? I understand that you can restore to a legit copy of the firmware to avoid this but what happens if something happens to cause your iPhone to lockup and you can't restore? If you take it to the Apple store you're boned, no?

They have to be running 2.2 otherwise they will only see blocks. They don't have to be jailbroken, just running firmware 2.2

You can always DFU restore unless it's a hardware problem, in which case Apple will replace it because then they won't be able to restore it either.
It's not like they have some special iPhone restoring machines, they probably use iTunes just like us.

No, all the Jailbreak does, if you don't install apps, is to allow access to the root directory (very short and to the point description). A DFU restore to stock firmware fixes the phone. Also my process restores the phone to stock firmware anyway.

And a bunch of emoji on the phone, don't forget! That will be the biggest clue. They'll be wondering how they got on there...and so far, there is only one way.
On a different note, look at the screen shots of this app:
http://appshopper.com/social-networking/webmessenger
This app has emoticons that can be added to texts. Couldn't someone have just made an SMS app that included emoji to avoid all this? Can someone just do this now, for the rest of the world? It won't be duplicating a function, because the rest of the world functionally doesn't have emoji on their iPhones. :D (thanks Apple)

Hi Guys,
Ive been reading for a while through this site and a few others on getting the Emoji enabled on my :apple: iPhone 3G 2.2. I didnt want my iphone to be permanently Jailbroken so never done it.
Came across this below from andyblila and i have to say very well done. I went through this process in less than an hour and it worked flawlessly. My phone is back to its "original" ;) locked self with Emoji enabled.
Thought i would sign up as well and let you know
Well everyone, this is what I did and it worked.

Any ideas?

I followed the video instructions too and I was stuck on the Apple logo for a good few minutes before it went on. It was at least 5 times longer than in the video.
However, I can make a phone call.
After playing with Cydia for most of the night I've decided that it's mostly a waste of time. The only thing that has actually improved my phone is SBSettings and that's only because it allows me to turn on/off bluetooth without having to go through settings, etc. You just swipe your finger across the status bar and the menu pops up. Other than emoji being enabled that there really isn't anything but a crap load of winterboard themes that mostly make your phone look like a bad Windows theme.

Well I have emoji. :) But can't make a phone call or send a text. :(
Cydia looks cool and I would like to play with it some more but I really need to get my phone connection back.
If I go back to DFU mode, that should take me back to to setting before the jailbreak and phone should be working, am I thinking correctly?
Update:
I got my phone connection back but no emoji. <sigh> I must have missed a step somewhere. I will try again tonight after work.

Last night, I jailbroke my phone (having previously vowed never to jailbreak), edited com.apple.Preferences.plist, backed up, then unjailbreak'd via a DFU restore.
I didn't like the vCard method, and I'm too tight to pay for an app (especially one that doesn't work with 2.2.1!). So I'm pretty happy with the method I used - jailbreaking really isn't me, but it was just a way of editting com.apple.Preferences.plist - my phone is not jailbroken anymore.
The only weird thing is that I used pledit.exe on Windows to edit com.apple.Preferences.plist. However, I couldn't add </true> as it wouldn't let me do it. I noticed all the other preferences where enabled via <integer>1</integer>, so I did that instead. Did anyone else notice this?
