Is it possible for the Apple remote to work with anything other than Front Row? It seems kind of useless if I can't use it with powerpoint. Thanks.

Keynote, PowerPoint, you name it. It also works in iPhoto, iTunes, and several other applications.

Front Row... give me a break. If that was the extent of its usefulness, that'd be just silly. :p

there is also a program called remote buddy (http://www.iospirit.com/) that will let you map the apple remote to any application.

you can also use a wii-mote which connects via bluetooth, so you don't have to point directly at the mac. plus if you have a sensor bar (basically a couple of infra-red LED's) you can use the wiimote as a mouse, and it come with a built in mouse highlight option, so you could use it as a pointer.
