Our one day sales have been on Dec 1st in the last few years.
NZ don't have Thanksgiving so this isn't a Black Friday event - just their standard once a year one day sale.

Again, expect nothing in a sale from Apple. When you can get $300 off a typical $700-$800 PC this Black Friday, these types of Mac discounts are worth nothing. Puny 10% Apple discounts are just not good enough when you're seeing 30%-50% off PC laptops this Friday.

Ah Apple, at the spearhead of forcing every American holiday down the throats of the rest of the world..... and at up to 10% off their products I couldn't care less, wonder if the native americans get a further discount for old times sake.

Twas the midnight after Thanksgiving,
and all through the house,
everyone was shopping,
for their new mighty mouse.
They'll purchase a new MacBook,
single-piece aluminum,
then have it gift wrapped,
and sent straight to them.
Paying the bill
for a new Cinema Display,
they'll say, "that's not so bad,
that price is ok!"
Continuing on
with a Thanksgiving tradition,
they'll be done Christmas shopping-
they'll be done with their mission.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Apple gets no new customers from their puny "sales", and yet loses potential money from customers who were going to buy from Apple anyway, isn't that only hurting Apple?

i guess that's one way to look at it. could argue that i don't stop being a student just because it's the day after thanksgiving, but i guess profit outweighs logic. it's too bad, a black friday sale price in addition to student discount would actually bring macbook pricing more in touch with reality. oh well, at least i'll get to sleep in then.

It's about clearing stock and getting more traffic than they would without such an event and having those customers often buy things they wouldn't otherwise.
What I meant by my comment was that it isn't a day when companies are generous towards consumers. It's nothing more than a lure to get people spending and Apple obviously know what sort of discounts they need to offer to make Black Friday work for them.
To say a 10% discount isn't good enough because other computers can be had for less (often end of line or poor quality) stinks to me of entitlement. I'm sure someone will quote me (well maybe not now) of being a fanboi, but there are a lot of people on this forum that ignore logic and expect Apple to bend over backwards for them when it isn't in Apple's interests at all.

Evidently Apple don't seem to think so and they will have a lot of sales data and market research to make that judgement.

So you're telling me a puny 10% is going to draw a ton of customers? When you can't currently buy a computer from Apple for less than $1000 (not including the dead Mac Mini)? BF is about deals and bargains. And bargains are items in the low to mid 100's of dollars. Saving $100 off a normally $1000 machine isn't significant. Saving $300 off a normally $700 machine is.
To say a 10% discount isn't good enough because other computers can be had for less (often end of line or poor quality)
Completely unsupported statement. Low-priced does not equal low quality.

If Apple is indeed calling it a "Black Friday" sale, it doesn't deserve that name unless they are prepared to offer Black Friday-like discounts. (which they most certainly will not)

And Apple obviously feel at 10% (or whatever they do this year) the balance is right for them. Maybe they would be better off with bigger deals in the long run but that is their choice and they have the information to make such decisions.
Completely unsupported statement. Low-priced does not equal low quality.
I wasn't basing that on prices but on what I have previously seen on sale on Black Friday.

I apologise for misinterpreting the intentions behind your comments. Sometimes it is hard to tell when someone isn't one of the crowd on this forum that feel Apple owe them everything they want and that anything Apple does that they don't approve of or doesn't benefit them is wrong for Apple.

"deserve", how funny. Yes yea grand arbiter of all retail nomenclature, Apple be not worthy of such a claim.
Hey, if you're gonna buy an Apple product anyway, 10% is 10%. And the bottom line is rather straight forward, Apple doesn't need to discount any further, and if they did, then they likely will (as they are doing now to help support some of their retail partners).

They did last year (I don't recall it happening before that in the UK). It was 30th November, 1 week after Black Friday in the USA. There were modest discounts - I bought the Apple Bluetooth headset for £69 (normal price was £79). There were a limited number of other similar reductions.

That would be an issue if the NZ stores repriced their stock - I'm sure you know as well as I do that Apple hasn't repriced the MB due to the dollar yet.
We're not talking petrol here.
If anything, in relative terms, the price of the MB and MBP has decreased over the last few months because there hasn't been any alteration to the price.

I wonder if the deals will be free bundled items rather than percentage discounts, like the back-to-school free ipod with a mac deals. So maybe free ipods with macs, and free accessories of sometype with ipods (or perhaps itunes vouchers)
Thoughts?

Well, Apple will stack discounts. I am not sure if it works for student discounts on this, but last year for this sale, I got my employee discount (not through Apple, but through CCE) and this sale for some iPod nanos. They will only do it if you call though, and not at the retail stores, or at least that is what the Apple Rep told me when I placed the order. But be prepared for a long wait on hold.
Depending on the circumstances, many places stack discounts. Staples comes to mind.

IMO, 10% isn't too "puny" at all. $1800 MBA - 180 = $1620, a considerably lower price. Unless you are really so thriftless that you don't think an extra $180 in your pocket is worth anything? I agree that the 10% that everyone is speculation won't be drawing tons of people, but it will definitely net them more sales than not. Also, Apple isn't all laptops and computers; they have these things called "iPods" that are quite popular as well. They're pretty popular as gifts, so an extra 10% off is just more incentive to get one.

I think, in my most humblest way, that the discounts are really meant for Apple's brick and mortar stores. If you are in a mall on BF and in a buying frenzy (which the mall and other stores have already done) then seeing a glitzy Apple product on sale could entice you into an Apple store. In a mall, the disount may bring in a large number of new customers. And yes, I know that there are better deals elsewhere, but if you are new to Apple you don't know that - yet.
I'll bet that most of the people in an Apple Store on BF are new customers. Die hard Apple users are going to think twice about going into a packed frenzied Apple store just to save 10%. Some will, but a lot won't.
The online discounts are likely just a reflection of the Apple store prices, and the Apple stores are probably where Apple wants to make its BF impact.
Just my humble 2 cents... no 3 cents, wait 3.75 .... 2.25 ... ok now its 1.33 ... sheesh I hate these currency fluctuations....

Clearly you've never been in a U.S. Apple Store on Black Friday. It's more mobbed than usual and product does literally fly off the shelf, or table, as is the case. 10% isn't a huge discount for most products but it is rather rare on Apple products @ a retail store and it does seem to influence people's buying decision. Clearly Apple must have market data to support this or they wouldn't bother.

i wonder if this just means that everyone will be getting education prices?
in that case im happy, just bought a new alu macbook yesterday for $300 less than retail and i would have been peeved if black friday prices were less than that!
i dont remember apple offering any real special prices last year and here with the NZ dollar being crap, the prices have jumped about $300 for retail, might not have much margin anymore to move on.

***** - sorry, forgot Canada.
Boxing Day is awesome, it's usually hot as hell and we just sit inside stuffing ourselves watching the cricket from Melbourne.
But the last few years it's been snowing in many places on Boxing Day so the old fashioned stinking hot Christmas seems to be on the outer.
It snowed a couple of days this week in the mountains too so who knows what's going to happen.
As far as the sale goes, I got my email from Apple Australia today - probably just the standard stuff. Though they may be a bit more aggressive than in the past to counter the downturn in retail spending which I might add is nowhere near as bad here as in the US.

Good point..... OK, but - if Apple posted the discounts on their US store, but not the rest of the world.... then we might get annoyed enough to let Apple know our displeasure. And since most of the world is doing some seasonal shopping right now (some more than others) then its a good time to offer some sort of sale. Thats the best rationalization I can come up with.

I marked my calendar. Now I need a new calendar.
I can't speak for other countries, but in the UK every second shop (and that's an understatement) seems to be having a sale, often with 50 to 70% off (selected items, that is). If Apple goes with a 10% offer, then all I'll be popping over to the Applestore for is to lob a brick through their candy-ass window.

It is interesting that many stores and online merchants are announcing their Black Friday deals early this year, some have already started their sales since this past Sunday. Maybe it's the bad economy? Of course Apple doesn't.
I am curious if Apple's Friday sale will be any better than the current Best Buy sale, which is the best for any brick and mortar store. I hear that Apple is currently price matching Best Buy. It would suck for people to wait till Friday to buy from Apple and find out that the price is higher than Best Buy's which ends midweek.
Last years Apple Black Friday:
iMac: $1148 ($51 off), $1398 ($101 off), $1698 ($101 off), $2198 ($101 off)
MacBook: $1048 ($51 off), $1198 ($101 off), $1398 ($101 off)
iPod Classic: $228 ($21 off), $318 ($31 off)
iPod Nano: $138 ($11 off), $188 ($11 off)
iPod shuffle: $68 ($11 off)
No MacbookPro or Mac Pro on sale
Wonder what they will do this year.
Best Buy currently has discounts on the MBP and MP.
Maybe eventually US retailers will end this madness and have things on sale all week. I know that I won't be waiting in line anywhere.

They're not calling it a Black Friday sale - it's just a one day sale, they have them every year. Last year in Aus it was December 1st.
They must just want to synchronise them this year - no harm done.
How are they forcing an American holiday? There's no mention of Thanksgiving at all. NZ doesn't celebrate it, neither do we and the rest of the world - doesn't mean we can't get a sale too.

Everyone who has said that you can't get educational discount as well as the discount on Friday, you are wrong!
Look at this page
http://store.apple.com/uk-edu
it's the educational store with the friday discount ad on it!
Also I've just asked an Apple Genius on the online web chat and asked her and she said of course you can!
By the way have iMacs been discounted in the past? If there are that would be awesome, about £300 of a iMac! WooWhoo! :):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

From my understanding, the prices go slightly up in the week or weeks before Black Friday, which this year is on the 28th, so that on Friday they lower their prices and the lowering seems more than if it was just lowered from the original price :p

I'm training all this week just yards from the Apple Store in Regent Street, London. Will be sure to swing in there on Friday and see if there is anything going down there :D
Maybe some reduced price headphones, like the Etymotic Research or Shure ones. Could do with a decent set!

US customers should be smarting.
And we are a day AHEAD of the US too :D :apple:

On the apple store, all of the prices for each product has NZ- $___ on it. The price is increased... What happened, am I on a different setting or something? Confused, I want the old prices back :D
We got screwed by the NZ US exchange rate. Currently $1.00 NZ will get 54c US.

This will be my first Apple computer so anything Apple gives for a discount will be great for me. However, I someone mentioned the education discount along with the Black Friday sale....someone said they don't stack discounts, someone else said that they were.... How about the Federal Government discount? Do you think if I asked at the Apple store today they would give me accurate information? I'm also thinking about picking up a couple of ipods....

Do the Black Friday sales usually apply to the Education Store as well???? The Ed Store already has Macbook prices $100 lower than the retail price.

Twas the midnight after Thanksgiving,
and all through the house,
everyone was shopping,
for their new mighty mouse.
They'll purchase a new MacBook,
single-piece aluminum,
then have it gift wrapped,
and sent straight to them.
Paying the bill
for a new Cinema Display,
they'll say, "that's not so bad,
that price is ok!"
Continuing on
with a Thanksgiving tradition,
they'll be done Christmas shopping-
they'll be done with their mission.
Seems like every year christmas is more and more about spending money.

But does the developer discount stack? I'd like to take advantage of my account.
The ad is on the Developer Store...wow.
I still don't think they'll stack.

The discounts usually just cover tax. At least the edu discount does. And it seemed that way last time. $10 of an ipod. $10 to me is not worth dealing with all the madness. I'll go any normal time and pay $10 more. Also normally just the large computers. I don't think headphones or cases get discounted. If apple tv does I might get one. Doubt it though. Even then discount is so small. Still not worth it.
Where did you get $300 off?
Also if you can add the student on top then that would make a difference. $1271 OTD for the backlit macbook would be nice. Still can't get one though  well, maybe not. I just assumed 20% and don't feel like looking up what the edu price is.
Moral of the story, probably not worth the hassle.

So you're telling me a puny 10% is going to draw a ton of customers?
I don't know (or care) about a ton, but it's certainly going to draw me. I've been waiting for this sale to buy an aluminum Macbook, and if I get 10% off I'll be more than happy.
If Apple is indeed calling it a "Black Friday" sale, it doesn't deserve that name unless they are prepared to offer Black Friday-like discounts. (which they most certainly will not)
"Black Friday-like discounts"? Is there some threshold that has to be met to call it a Black Friday sale? Is there a government agency that oversees that?

Can anyone remember from last year if refurbed Macs and iPods were eligible for BF discounts? They're already cheaper but an extra rebate certainly won't hurt. I'll go for a refurb iPod if the price goes down a bit; if not, I'll keep my money for a better opportunity later

If they even lower the aluminum macbook 1$ dollar i will be extremely pissed off....I just bought it the other 15 days ago under the assumption there wouldn't be additional sales...i got 2 faulty machines so they gave me an additional 100$ off ...but still the price of the macbook alum is f'n ridiculous compared to the other laptops out there.

Meh........ Modest discounts, if that.
If Apple is indeed calling it a "Black Friday" sale, it doesn't deserve that name unless they are prepared to offer Black Friday-like discounts. (which they most certainly will not)
If we're simply inventing standards, here, then there are no Black Friday sales this year.
Stereotypical quote time: "With the economy how it is," all deals at all retailers "need" to be better. It'd be a lackluster year without a recession, and no one seems to care enough not to buy.

If yo don't like it, don't buy it. No company that wants to make any sort of money would ever say, "Oh, they're buying them at this price, let's lower it anyway!"
NO. If people buy it at that price, then Apple will continue to sell it at that price. You only have the right to be upset at the price if you don't buy it at that price at all.

Most likely, one of the products that Apple will offer hot deals on would be the iMac as it wasn't updated this fall and new iMacs should be coming early 2009.

Microsoft Live is offering a 25% rebate off ebay buy it now purchases. I've used it to buy four of the new nanos and and a 16GB ipod touch. I bought from a NY Apple retailer (Datavision Computer Video) and had absolutely no problems.
I have been reluctant to use it on computer purchases though. For my new MBP, I bought from Amazon because of their excellent return policy. In retrospect, I'm glad I went through Amazon because I had to do a couple of exchanges.

Right, i really need help with this!
As my parents have been paid today, i was going to get a macbook pro though my college tommorow, which gets me it at £1,180 compared to the £1,399 RRP.
So do you think that cause of the black fridays sale, if i get it this friday, ill get more off?
Any ideas/help/answers would be much appreciated :):):apple:

Extremely unlikely that you'll get it for less than £1,180 on Friday. I very much doubt they'll be offering it even as cheap as that, it it's reduced at all.

exactly. still don't get it why people purchase over at the apple store. even holding breath for their so called black friday deal which is as weak an lame as the next insurance company next block. with the apple retail "black friday" deals you'll get other places everyday price.
moreover, the eBay credit is instant now. sure the apple elitists would not use m$ live search even to save money (saving $$ is so un-apple, right?).
