View Full Version : Any good rock groups (bands) you can recommend?

Reading the other thread about "Where has pop music gone", I have to say: I miss good rock music. Lately iTunes have only had, may I say, extremely bad music at its top tens.

So I have to ask, are there any good rock groups lately?

The kind of rock music I like is Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, AC-DC, Aerosmith, Poison. Also groups like Bon Jovi, Oasis, Matchbox 20, Coldplay, Bryan Adams.

Lately I have only seen a few groups I could consider as good ones, like Franz Ferdinand or The Killers. But really, nothing compared to the previous groups I named. So, is it me not searching enough, or has this kind of music really ended?:(

I'll toss out a couple newer bands, more alternative/rock, you should really check out... Arcade Fire and Brand New.

Also, a couple of early 90s/early 2000s bands I really like, World Party (UK) and The Frames (Ireland.)

Lots of good music in their discography to fill out some empty holes in your music collection.

I like to go a little more post punk with my rock. If you want to explore a little outside of what your listed selection is I would say check out:
The 999s
The Boys Next Door
The Cars
The Comsat Angels
Ian Dury and the Blockheads
Nick Cave and the Badseeds
The Psychedelic Furs
Public Image Ltd.
The Sound
The Talking Heads
The Vapors

Just to name a few:)

A friend of mine with a great sense of really good music and a very wide catalog introduced me to the "post punk" genre. Some I had already been listening to, but things like The Sound, man just awesome. The recordings sound more garage and there is a real presence with every track.

Edit: Wow I just realized that if you take away the "The"s and the "And The"s, there would only be Public Image... Odd.

Agree with Melrose re Simple Minds, and Schtumple about The Beatles. Pink Floyd, The Cars, Squeeze, Clannad, The Frames, The Waterboys, some of Kiss, Coldplay, Radiohead, George Michael, Madness, Supertramp, Prince - these are just some of the bands I'd recommend. I'm sure that others will occur to me.

I'm not to sure why people keep reccomending nickleback, unless its money concerns, because once youve heard one of their songs youve heard probably 80% of their sound at least.:p

Anyway, its no secret I enjoy Coheed & Cambria, which admittedly isnt for everyone, its one of those you either love or hate relationships, so give them a try.

Protip: When listening to bands for the first time, DO NOT just stick to singles, you will never get the actual essance of the band.

So many groups I had never heard about. I listened to some songs (previews) in iTunes and I think these were the ones I liked the most:
- Del Amitri
- Fall Out Boy (I already had "Beat It" from them, which is an amazing cover.)
- Arcade Fire
- World Party
- The Frames
- British Sea Power
- Live
- Simple Minds
- Squeeze
- Clannad
- George Michael

Some others I already had. Like The Beatles, Nickleback and Metallica. And others I had already listened to, but never got to like the music, like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, KISS (I like some of KISS, but only 2 or 3).

BTW, how do you find new music? If you see my music you'll find out most of them are popular groups.

It's true, I guess it's like it or hate it. I really like some of the songs, specially the last album (except the hard metal ones).

Edit: Wow I just realized that if you take away the "The"s and the "And The"s, there would only be Public Image... Odd.

I noticed the same thing.:p

There is an odd, exquisite - but wonderfully compelling - that album I keep returning to, called Love Forever Changes, by a sort of psychedelic band named - also - Love, from the western US (San Francisco, where else?) in the mid/late 1960s. The incomparable Arthur Lee was the lead singer/songwriter/major domo. It's one of those timeless albums I can listen to almost endlessly.

To the OP, I'd also say to spread your wings a bit, as well and listen to some stuff outside of the mainstream. It can be really rewarding. I love Latin music, and not only the pure trad and jazz. For example, Los Lobos are a fantastic modern US group, with a musical ancestry which succesfully (to my ear) blends Mexican/rock/folk and sheer punk anarchism very well.

Cheers and good luck

Why not try something non-rock?

Gang Gang Dance - St. Dymphna is totally perfect.

I do have some non-rock music. I enjoy songs that have piano and acoustic guitar (I have a rare addiction to James Blunt), and sometimes I'm also in kind of a "girly" (:D) mode and listen to things like Hanson, Mika, etc.

But most of the times I prefer rock music.

Oh yes, Queen, wonderfully, operatically, over the top, but simply wonderful at their best. Speaking (writing?) of operatically over-the-top but wonderful music, why not look up Bono and Pavarotti's fantastic duet Miss Sarajevo?

I was just seeing the movie "Live Free or Die Hard", and heard this song at the end that was/is very popular: "Fortunate Son" from Creedence Clearwater.

I went up and searched some other songs from them, and had a good surprise. Never knew they had some other good songs.

BTW, I'm going to see Oasis tomorrow. Let's hope they offer a good concert.

The Offspring

I didn't liked the new CD that much. I preferred their previous ones, the one of "My friend's got a girlfriend, man he hates that b....". A classic.:p

Green Day

No, no, no. I went to one of their concerts, and man they were really bad. They do have some good songs, but that concert really wasn't up to what I expected.

Velvet Revolver

I also saw this guys. They opened the concert of U2. What can I say, they were completely drugged.:D

So you are looking for bands that play "80's style" music. I can guess your age.

Lot's a good music was made both before and after that time period. The good older stuff is easier to find as time has filtered out the crap. Music from the 50's through 70's might be new to you.

I have a son who is high school age. It's interesting to see what's popular with that age now. As anyone would guess 90% of the kids are "sheepeople" who just follow the heard and don't think. But there are always a few who are different is that crowd The Doors have just been re-discovered and Hendrix is still popular. It was fun to hear this teenager tell me about the "new band" he just found out about called "The Doors" and then he goes on about Morrison's lyrics.

I've gone back and listened to some older music, a lot of it I didn't much like back then. I now I see why. Much of it was right over my head.

I think it's always been the case the the top 40 is junk. Go look up a top 40 list from any period 20 or 40 years ago most of it did not survive and is forgotten

Finding good new stuff is hard because it is not yet filtered. But I'm lucky living here in the Los Angeles area we have good public radio. I think public radio stations are a great place to find good new music. Many of the stations have web sites and web-casts too. So you don't have to live nearby.

I'll be a third for Coheed and Cambria. Saw them play IV Volume 1 at the Palladium a few weeks ago, probably the best show I've ever been to, the pit was crazy and they played for close to 2:30-3 hours (not a Pink Floyd length show, but long by todays standards).

I'll also recommend Thrice, Weezer, and Brand New. Also, check out The Clash and add some Pink Floyd to your collection if there isn't already some in there (in particular Dark Side Of The Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, and Animals). Maybe check out some Death Cab For Cutie and Manchester Orchestra, if you're not opposed to softer stuff.

What album was that off of? Their 15th? You have to go back to the beginning, when they weren't poppy. 'Offspring - Offspring' and 'Ignition' are still two of my favorite albums. Smash is excellent as well.

Teen Who Just Discovered Led Zeppelin Starting To Piss Off Friends
OCTOBER 31, 2001 | ISSUE 37•39

GURNEE, IL—Mark Campa, 16, who has listened to and talked about Led Zeppelin almost exclusively since discovering the '70s rock group over the summer, is "really starting to piss off" his friends, sources reported Monday.

"I've got nothing against Zep—they're awesome," said James Savich, 16, a longtime friend of Campa's. "But Mark acts like he's the first person ever to really get into them when he's, like, the 59 billionth."

Campa was first exposed to the band in June when older brother Bryan returned from college and started playing Led Zeppelin II while lifting weights in the garage. After one listen, Campa was reportedly hooked, buying his own copy and playing it incessantly for weeks.

Campa's Led Zeppelin fixation soon manifested itself in myriad ways, with the teen playing only Led Zeppelin in his car, drawing the Led Zeppelin IV runes on his arm, and spending $73 at the Kane County Fair ring toss in an effort to win a Swan Song mirror.

According to friends, Campa's newfound love of the band has caused him to behave in a "dicklick" fashion.

"Last Saturday night, a bunch of us were driving around cranking the new Slipknot when Mark popped the tape out and started messing with the radio," said Rick Eglund, 17. "I was like, 'Dude, what's your problem?' He said it was time for WLUP's 'Get The Led Out' and that he never missed it. I told him he was gonna miss it that night. Then, he tried to stop me from putting the tape back into my own stereo. I had to pull over and force him to switch seats with Dan [Alberman]."

"The stupid thing is, at the time, we were driving Mark home," Eglund continued. "He has all their CDs, so he could've listened to Zep all night if he'd just waited five minutes. I guess he had to prove what a big fan he is."

In addition to naming his '91 Prelude the "Honda Of The Holy" and renaming his cat of four years "Bonzo" as an homage to late Led Zeppelin drummer John "Bonzo" Bonham, Campa has irritated friends with his constant barrage of Led Zeppelin trivia.

"In the past week alone, I've learned that Keith Moon came up with the band's name, Jimmy Page is in the movie Blowup, and 'All Of My Love' is about Robert Plant's son Karac, who died from a viral infection," Savich said. "And if I hear Mark tell us about the 'mudshark incident' one more time, I'm gonna kill him. Everybody knows Hammer Of The Gods is ********, anyway."

Campa has also developed a habit of pointing out Led Zeppelin connections to seemingly non-Zeppelin-related items.

"I downloaded the Lord Of The Rings trailer and, next thing you know, Mark goes into this whole thing about how 'The Battle Of Evermore' references the book Lord Of The Rings," Alberman said. "I had to re-start the trailer after he was done because no one got to see it. It's getting to the point where you're almost afraid to go to a movie with Mark because John Paul Jones' second cousin might be an extra in it."

Added Eglund: "It could be worse, I guess. He could've gotten into the Grateful Dead. Or Floyd. Just imagine if he walked around all day quoting Dark Side Of The Moon. Christ."

Anyhoo... I just saw Gov't Mule -- they rocked the house. Some nice covers of 'War Pigs', 'When the Music's Over', and 'Wish You Were Here' among the other show gems...

I don't think anyone has mentioned Snow Patrol, who are excellent in a kind of alternative/soft-rock way. Their older stuff (like Final Straw) is superior to their newer albums, though.
