View Full Version : How many Macs have you owned?

A.K.A. Foxer's (Apple) Odessey

I was thinking, whilst sitting in traffic this morning, that I have owned more than my share of Macs since switching back from the PC world in May 2002. Nine fippin' Macs. The excellent resale value of Apples has allowed me to swtich computers a ridiculous rate. I need an intervention or something. Somehow, my wife has not left me.

(At least I'm still on my first iPod! And I've accumulated quite a collection of Apple stickers.)

May 2002 - Dual 1.0 PowerMac. Sold 1/2003 in anticipation of speed bump.

Aug. 2002 - 14 inch iBook. Needed a portable for a month-long business trip. Sold Oct. 2002 b/c I didn't need it anymore.

January 2003 - 17-inch iMac. Wanted a "hold-over" desktop. Sold in March 2003.

March 2003 - Dual 1.42 PowerMac. iMac just wasn't working out - wanted dual processor power for proapps. Sold in June in anticipation of G5.

March 2003 - 12-inch PowerBook. Transferred to position with weekly travel and I wanted a mac to carry around. Sold in July.

July 2003 - 1 Ghz eMac. "Hold-over" until G5. Sold in Oct.

Oct. 2003 - Dual 2.0 G5. Sold in January '04 when I took a lower paying job to raise cash.

January 2004 - 17-inch PowerBook. For some reason I thought this was an "economical." Sold a month later.

February 2004 - 12-inch G3 iBook. Ultimate cost saver while I wait for Rev.B G5.

Somehow, my wife has not left me.

I'm hoping that by the time I buy my next computer I'll be back into a cycle of my life where I have a good job (right now I'm in grad school . . . again). Then maybe I can get a non bottom-of-the-line mac for the first time since 1993.

I've had a Blue and White G3.

My family of four has had about 16 Macs, so many that we've lost count. For several models we've owned more than one simultaneously. We've named every one of them. Right now, we try to keep only as many computers around as there are people, but that "rule" has caused me to invite guests over. :p

This should be fun.

I have a Mac Plus we got in 1986 or something
Still works. With original 20gb Apple Drive. Anyone wanna buy it?

Also have 2 SE's and a Classic II.

At one point had a IIsi, IIci, Color Classic, Centris 650, PowerCenter 120, 7200/120, 4400/200, G3 266 (upgraded to 366), Lombard 333, G4 Dual 450, Tibook 667.

Now I have a Dual Gig QS and a Powerbook 12 1ghz.

There was a weekend where I rescued 25 9500's from the dumpster at my old art school, took 'em home, reinstalled system 8.5 on 'em and sold 'em on ebay.

Helped allow me to not work for a year in art school and subsequently start my freelance career. I'll never forget slumming it in a dumpster, tossing Macs to a friend, and then ditching my coveralls in the dumpster, putting on a pair of sweatpants and driving back to my house.

Was hilarious.

Personally, I own two. A Beige G3 (http://homepage.mac.com/counterfit/PhotoAlbum3.html) and a Aluminum 15" PB (http://homepage.mac.com/counterfit/PhotoAlbum1.html)

My parents own(ed):
Apple IIgs (lent/given to a family member)
LC520 (sitting in my father's office at his school until they get him a newer computer)
333MHz Lime iMac, sitting at home, doing little of anything.

My brother has a UMAX S900, and has been trying to get some $$ for a 17" PB, but has probably decided to wait for the G5 PB's.

I've owned 3 Macs, and I still have all 3.

PowerMac 7600 132 MHz, upgraded to G3 350 MHz, running OS 8.6. Still using it for Digital Performer, on those rare occasions when I get a chance to make some music anymore.

QuickSilver G4 733 MHz, running 10.3.2. My main machine at home.

iBook G3 600 MHz, running 10.3.2. The wife's machine.

I've also managed to convince my employer (where Windows is king and Mac is a dirty word) to buy two 15.2" PowerBooks (1.25 GHz) and a dual 2 GHz G5 Power Mac with an XServe RAID. I personally use one of the PowerBooks every day, and often use the G5 either remotely from my office or directly down in the lab. They're "mine" too as far as I'm concerned. :D

I don't know if you meant it humorously or not, but that actually was when I was at Virginia Tech, from VT surplus 7300s.

It wasn't a barnburner but it let me do renders significantly faster than I could on the G3 I had then, for just a few hundred bucks.

That was also quite a few years ago.

I've been a mac user since about 1996 or 1997. My first Mac was a Performa 6300 CD...I really like that computer a lot.

Next up was a beige G3 PowerMac that I got for college.

After my freshman year I decided to get a G3 laptop though I kept my powermac as well.

Now I'm just down to a G4 powermac.

Oh. How could I have forgotten the laptops I owned... Duo 210 and 1400cs

Also, there was the Mac Portable. How could anyone consider that a laptop?

I've only ever had 1 Mac, an eMac 1GHz which I got a couple of weeks ago. I am very happy with it so I wouldn't be surprised if it was the first of many in the years to come.

I think you're right....

Usually my relationships with the female part of the human race don't really enjoy being shared with 17 other... eh... companions. ;)

Likewise, my 17 companions (of which the girlfriend amazingly seems to figure out my favorite one i.e. the fastest) don't get on too well with her either:
She will usually ask the only steady companion(s) "Where is the start-button?"...

That most of the time spells the end of girl-Mac-me trio relationship :(

now that's a great way to start into the mac world

i got started with an apple II and while it was cool, i didn't have an optical drive, the blazing speed, or the internet

i have heard of people who started their experience with macs with a tibook...i wonder how that feels...he he...and one day we will all hear about a pc user switching over and buying their first mac which will be a G5 power mac :D

I'm new to this game, having only worn the Macintosh badge for just 2 years. Therefore I have only ever owned 3. However, due to my positive vibe, I have inspired incalculable others to buy one for themselves.

For 'incalculable' read two, so I will claim those as well by proxie. God I feel I'm in the big leagues now!:D

iMac 333Mhz - Tangermarine

aaaannnnd two weeks newly acquired... (although not new itself)

-Titanium PowerBook 800mhz 15.2" MegaWidescreen ($1150 CAD)

(I got it with a brand new battery, 128 bit AirPort card, 512MB RAM, Brand New Top Case, Brand New 40GB HDD)

I quickly put an 80 GB HDD and returned the 40GB, (The difference was $104 CAD)
And further customized by replacing every key to white. (Free)

Total- about $1450 CAD with tax

Brand New it was $5099. What a deal.
I plan on having this for a couple of years.
