Hey guys - I'm running fan control 1.2 on my 2.4Ghz early 2008 MBP - I've got the base speed set at 1000 rpm. Is this advisable ? It doesn't seem to get to hot so I imagine it should be ok...

Cheers

Nope nothing wrong with that they should ramp if need be or you could do it manually if doing something intensive

I can't. I have the newest version.

edit: I see, I'm using smcFanControl. Confusing names...
yeah, works with fan control but not smc fan control... 🙂

You use fan control to go below 2000. SMC won't do the trick. However, this will create a lot of more heat, so i'm not sure why you would want to do this.

Wow, thats very good. Mine's at 50-60 when the fans are at 2000, and i am plugged into power. When i'm on battery, my temps are 40-55

I know i seem to be one of the lucky ones who didn't suffer from heat problems when the MBP's were introduced, here's the temps with safari and a few apps open ( fans at 1000rpm ).

hey - thanks guys - i swapped my stock HDD for a Samsung SSD so can hear the fans when they are at 2000 RPM - so i've got them set to 1000 and it doesn't get too hot - I literally need to put my ear on the keyboard to hear anything! they do creep up to 1500 after the machine has been on for a while or if I'm doing anything heavy. My cpu temp is around 45c - its pretty cold in the UK right now and I guess that helps. Fan Control 1.2 is the one to use!

Both temp monitors are Ok, but id do some reading up should you ever need to uninstall Fan Control as it can be problematic

Here's my temps - you've got to love SSD's for the lack heat alone!

whoops, old pic. Anyway, it's 55 degrees, and it increases to about 60

Compared to yours, they seem high. I don't like hot temperature computer, yet i also don't like fan noise. 😱 not the best combination. 😛

I don't think a couple of C's is gonna make any difference, i think people worry to much about it start worrying when they go above a 100 or so, you could look into replacing the thermal grease if it bothers you

Yea, i think i do worry a bit too much.😱 I have my fans at 1.6k now, and the temp is a constant 59-60, so all is good.

I have a Santa Rosa 2.4 MBP15 from late last year. I just had my fan replaced at the Apple store and the tech advised me to uninstall SMC Fan Control. After having done that, the fan comes on at 72F at 6000RPM and doesn't quit. I suspect AppleFan.kext and/or AppleBlower.kext plist files were edited for the worse by the program. Any advice? Can I find the default plist files for those kext's online?

Edit: I did put back SMC, no effect. I also reset my system management controller manually, no effect.

Edit: That wasn't the problem. Replacd the kext's with known good ones from a friend, and now my MBP is back behind the genius bar again.
