I've never really known which way to put my head when I hug someone and Google didn't seem to help much so I'm asking you. When you hug someone, do you put your head on the left or right side of their head? I've had enough of head butting.

I just head-butt :D
But seriously, I think left side. And I think so because when I greet a lady friend, I kiss her right cheek first, so my head has to be to her right, therefore her head on my right side, so my head will be left.

Left, but we drive on the other side of the road, which explains it.
Not that I get hugs, of course :(
EDIT: Driving on the other side of the road is not a euphamism. We actually do.

I normally don't hug. When I do I put my head to the right. I am left handed. I'm not really seeing a pattern in the results of this poll.

I hug right, as I'm the guy and normally initiate the hug. ;)

No, no, YOUR left or right, or we will never get an accurate result.
I always go to my left, their right. ;)
EDIT: OK, just re-read the OP. <whoops> I hug to their right, but I said my left. My bad.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies. I'll now angle for the left but it seems that there isn't a particular side that most people go to. Interesting.

I prefer left, and most people I know do it that way.
Very religious members of my extended family tree always seem to favor the right ... Not a political statement, but I find it rather odd.

I heard once that if you feel more attracted to/more close to a person you are, you hug them on the right since your hearts beat closer together.
How romantic.
How silly.
I know several guys that are very much into the 'bro hug' where you clasp your hands and knock shoulders with a slap on the back. You know the one I mean; Like a perpendicular-handshake-hug... There's technique involved in that one, there is...

hahah that happened to me on Thanksgiving. It was, in fact, the most action I've seen in quite some time so I just went with it. :D
Nah I hug on the left I think. I dunno, I the only hugs I get are the occasional hugs written in good old fashioned texts. :(

I'm actually lol'ing because I am not sure if I am overly confused or just being silly.
Thanks for the .png hug. Nice upgrade. :D
On that note ... a shower is in order so I don't smell for my newly upgraded hug. :o

I guess I'm in the minority that hugs to the right.
Does it have to do with handedness? I was raised right handed but have a suspicion that I'm actually left handed.

Never really thought about this, but just as me and my girlfriend swap the sides of the bed we alter hugging directions too. Non-conformist to the maxx.

I do not hug. I do not like to be hugged. Hugging for me is like foreplay and I expect intercourse after. Shaking hands is awkward too but my family has gotten used to it. At least I do not expect intercourse after.

when i was younger i thought hugging was much more intimate than kissing.

Probably to the right but there always seems to be some sort of communication between and the hugger as to which way to go.

I've had enough of head butting.
The head butting doesn't come from going left or right, the head butting must come from you not telegraphing which side you're aiming toward and/or not reading the telegraph from the other hugger. Long before your heads ever get close to touching, the person who initiates the hug with the forward lunging motion is supposed to already have their their nose pointed in the direction that they're aiming for. So if you're the one starting the hug motion by moving forward, your nose should already be significantly pointed to the side you're intending your head to go. And if you're the recipient of an oncoming hug, you're supposed to read which side they're intending to go to by looking at the direction their face is twisted toward, and then you're supposed to twist your head to the correct side in response.
Until I started writing this reply I had no idea how complicated a social interaction a hug is!
EDIT:
And regarding the left / right handed versus hug direction thing, imo, you want to hug toward the direction of your weak hand because then it puts the majority of the other person's body on your strong hand side.

Im not really a fan of the hugging because people (not everyone) tend to make it awkward (you know the type...assed out hugging) simply because they're hugging out of formality rather than any true affection.
But to answer the question...i hug right.

Swing to the right, left arm higher, right arm lower. The identity of the hug recipient defines quite how low the right arm goes.

you made my day
I miss the option 'I never hug' as hugging is not really custom in The Netherlands (and probably other countries as well). We kiss, and we kiss three times (one cheeck more than the other) :) But men only kiss women and shake hands with other men, but women generally kiss women and men.
So, option c: I never hug...

ture.. same here in switzerland.. but still u have to decide witch side u start kissing...
Haha, that's right :) It's not a predetermined side I start, I think if I would make the initial move it would probably be left but it also depends on the initial move she makes. If she moves first I of course head towards the other cheeck :) Probably the same with hugging :)
