Couple of questions about indexing volumes in 10.3.

Is there any improvement, besides being able to find files faster via search? Any improvement in how the OS handles itself?

Also, how can you update the index incrementally instead of indexing the whole volume again?

Is there any improvement, besides being able to find files faster via search? Any improvement in how the OS handles itself? The only advantage to indexing is the fast fulltext searches. I don't even think it speeds up regular filename searches (those are pretty quick anyway). Not sure what you mean by how the OS handles itself, but I doubt there's much difference. It should run almost invisibly in the background, though.

Also, how can you update the index incrementally instead of indexing the whole volume again? Well, you can "Get info" on an individual folder and tell the finder to index that. Not exactly an incrimental index, but saves you re-doing everything.

By the way, is the option to auto-index gone completely? I'm not seeing it anywhere.

I don't know about any option to auto-index, but it runs about 4:30 a.m. every morning, if you leave the machine on.
