It has just been reported that Disney has purchased the right to The Muppets from Jim Henson Company.
Story at Quicken.com (http://www.quicken.com/investments/news/story/?story=NewsStory/BW/20040217/20040217006227.var&p=DIS)
If this isn't a sign of the Apocolypse, I don't know what is.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!
Well, at least the JH Co retains the rights to non-Muppets stuff like Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Farscape, Fraggle Rock, etc.
But Disney? the Muppets? Come on, Eisner, do you really think that's a substitute for Pixar?

Ouch....and after Comcast's bid was denied, you have to wonder if that had anything to do with it...
Ah nuts :(

I think I slept through the 8,300 other posts about the signs of the appocalypse -- but this is as bad as DEI selling rights to their signature properties to Petty Enterprises. :(

that sucks. disney is way to boring to own a great property like the muppets.

Nah, this has been in the works for over a year. The Henson company was half owned by EM.TV which was having serious solvency problems. Disney wanted the Muppet Movie properties but not the rest; that's how the family got involved in buying it out. Disney already had so many rights on Muppet stuff that their value would be pretty limited to anyone else.

well that's truly sad. such a huge bit of Henson's company...
The transaction includes all Muppet assets, including the Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and Animal characters, the Muppet film and television library, and all associated copyrights and trademarks.
Brian Henson, who with his sister Lisa is co-chair and co-chief executive officer of The Jim Henson Company, said, "This new and very important relationship will enable our two companies to combine our respective talents and resources in ways that will fully realize the tremendous potential of the Muppet and Bear franchises. Michael Eisner's long-standing passion and respect for the Muppets gives me and my family even more confidence in Disney as a partner."
umm... brian... sounds like your ass is pwned, seriously. partner nothing. they may have you make movies for them, they may cut you out entirely...

Disney is swollowing a poision pill. Look for more debt payments and aquasitions soon. My guess? Disneyland Paris debt buying, more large theme park construction, and others.

Yes, we all know that the CIA headquarters is named after George H. W. Bush, please let it drop. He was a war hero, and a dedicated Agent.

Speaking of Disney and new construction, I recently read that they are already building a new Theme Park in Hong Kong on one of the small Islands nearby.

in other news, strange noises were heard coming from Jim Hensens grave today. scientists believe the sound is due to his body having some sort of twitch that is causing him to constantly roll over.

He was Director for One Year
After being in the House of Representitives for one term.
Don't even bring Up George W. Bush.
I don't want a flamewar.
But none the less, at least George W. took economics. (He is following the basic rules of Economics)

i know disney and henson had a working relationship in the past, but to be honest, i'm not a fan of much that has been done with the muppets since jim henson died. i don't think the henson film company had much more direction than disney the past decade or so.
still, it hurts to think kermit et al are being absorbed.

And I can't think of anyone's signature that is more flame-worthy than yours

Actually what I ment, was...
To get out of a recession/depression in a reasonable ammount of time you MUST go into debt to rebuild the economy, then you use the upturn to pay off the debt. Also, the recession was started in 1999 therefore it is Clinton's fault, not Bush's.

Now THAT'S a signature worth discussing!

TEG If you want the nitty gritty, it was the investors putting their money into companies that never showed a profit...
And what is there to discuss about QCassidy's sig? It's common knowledge. :D

MrMacman thanks for siding over here on the light side... most people i've told about this were pretty indifferent about it! this kind of crap pisses me off so much.
my local college news paper had a satire on this today about how George Lucus bought the Star Trek franchise and how they were going to mix the two and stuff... it was pretty funny.
glad to see some people care about the muppets!
