Part of a portraits project I did in film for class, click on the pic for the rest :) . I've never really concentrated on portraits so it was an interesting first time for me. All shots were in 400 tri-x on Ilford multigrade IV.

This picture was taken yesterday. The composition and everything is terrible, but I like it anyways. Major cloning was done to remove some stuff (I guess that's the thing I'm most proud of?) but the cat, which I think was a stray, had a fun time staring at me.

Haha, it's all subjective. Personally I think the first one is more intense, and this one is a bit on the cheesy side. But they're supposed to be different takes of the same idea. :)
Thanks!

One of my favorite panoramas... taken from my 2006 vacation in Rocky Mountain National Park. For anyone who has (or wants to go there), this panorama was taken from Trail Ridge Road.
It's a shame I don't have my pictures from this vacation anymore... they were lost when the family Dell laptop crapped out on us and we had to restore it... I didn't have my pictures backed up anywhere.
I'm actually really pissed about it now (I was like 15 at the time when I took the images), because I would have liked to get this printed...

I have a realy big problems taking good landscape photos.
Should be able to take better photos with my setup, so it's probably my lack of skill.
The photo below was one of the better ones i took today, but i'm not 100% happy about it.
First when i take photos i get to much sky and foreground and have to crop the picture alot, leading to lower picture quality.
Then i don't get the sharpness i want in the photo, can it be that i use manual focus and no tripod?
Would love some tips to improve and any homepages or books worth reading.
As usual a lot of the pictures you post here are awesome :)

What was it about this particular landscape that caught your eye? It's dificult to tell. You have a very narrow strip of land... plus lots of sky and lots of water (with, presumably, lots more sky and water that you've cropped out).
In most landscape shots, think about planes: close-up, middle-distance, horizon.
Sharpness? Well, 1/50 sec seems low. 1/125 or faster would be better... and a tripod would be best of all (especially in low light)...

so far my trip to dubai has not been as picture worthy as i would have liked, but my friends have been trying to get me to take more photos of people. i love the architecture here, but havent taken out the tripod yet. still have 2 weeks left so still some time to explore.
this photo was taken outside a friends place, no tripod, so i rested the camera in between a branch of a tree and tried my best to get it as clear as possible. i was pretty pleased with the way it turned out and perspective.
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/2535/meadowsstreetmm0.jpg
i have been playing around with the settings and trying to improve everyday. i think taking my tripod out and taking more day shots will make me gain confidence in my pictures and i can progress with night shots down the road.
i will post more pictures and update my flickr once i return home because flickr is blocked in my area of dubai.

So for a landscape with not much in the foreground is it better so go with a quick shutter speed or a small aperture to achieve the sharpest image?
For the picture you posted, maybe there could have been more in the foreground...
Most lenses are sharpest around f8 and f11, in the sense that they offer a good depth of focus.
You don't need a fast shutter speed (unless the landscape is moving quickly ;)), only fast enough to avoid camera shake. If you use a tripod you have a greater freedom: ie a smaller aperture (= bigger number) for even greater depth of focus, and longer shutter speeds (extending into whole seconds as the light fades).
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3283/3124636232_6686242192_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/wesjoyce)
A really intriguing shot that makes you look twice, then keep looking... much as you would into a real fire (and good to see that book-burning didn't die out with the ending of the Third Reich)...

Complete and utter novice here. Bought my DSLR 2 days ago, and I'm currently attempting to absorb as much knowledge as possible. I brought my camera to a snooker game to play with exposure, and although the image below isn't the greatest example of that, it was probably the best overall image I got. All comments and criticisms are greatly appreciated, just bear in mind, the images where taken in order to learn, so the content isn't as inspirational as some in this thread.

Don't know about the noise... but the shot would be improved, IMO, by shooting a bit earlier... while there was still some light in the sky...

^That would help the noise as well, killed two birds with one stone, Doylem.
1) You'd be shooting for a shorter duration as your scene is brighter (longer exposures result in more noise).
2) Your scene would be brighter therefore less noise (noise is usually most evident in shadows).

Thanks Doylem, as always giving great advice. I still believe it turned out nicely when not maximized.

Erm... I didn't actually mean shooting in daylight... only that 'night' shots generally look better when shot at twilight (just after sunset), while there's still some light - and colour - in the sky. There comes a point when the ambient light and the artificial lights achieve a kind of balance... and if you shoot a series of pix you'll definitely find one that really sings...
I mention taking a series of pix, over maybe half an hour, 'cos, IMO, this helps to treat the shot as an event, not just a single moment. And I find it easier to review, say, a dozen identically composed pix on my computer screen (rather than the back of the camera), to find the best one or two.
I agree your shot did "turn out nicely", but by shooting a bit earlier - and with that degree of floodlighting - it would look truly magical... :)

Yeah, maybe I should bumped it at ISO400/800 and I wont notice the difference, Im surprise that at ISO1600, my DSLR is still able to produce very usable pictures. But the idea of increase to higher ISO will bring more noise always frighten me. Hmm, well I shall try again in the future with higher ISO.
Well that shot I honestly tell ya is not blurry, I zoomed into it and it shows no blur except for the instrument that it is holding which make it look like it was shaking. (IS really helps, hope more Canon lens will come with IS in the future)
Oh yea, is it me or Canon default kit lens (18-55 IS) got sharpness or focusing issue? Cause some of my pics taken that day (especially pics with my family) turn out not sharp. Still usable and to non-photographers (my family members except my dad) dont notice the difference but me and my dad notice the unsharpness spot on. Oddly enough, I am sure the AF point was on the subject.
Any reason to behind this? (The shutter speed is around 1/25 and the ISO is set to 400 for those shots)

One thing to remember is that grain can be removed with not too big of a penalty during PP. It's better to get the shot and endure the grain than not get the shot at all (I use ISO 1600 all the time on my XT with little to no fear).

Well, it felt...COLD! :) But yes, it did feel different; it was exciting watching different parts of the view light up as the clouds shifted around. However, I feel more in control when I shoot handheld. I ultimately took the camera off the tripod and snapped a few like that just to make me feel better. ;) Thanks for the compliment. :)

Nice! How'd you get yourself on a helicopter? Tour or charter? I've been thinking about doing something like that here, but there seem to have been a lot of helicopter crashes here lately.
Thanks!
I just contacted a helicopter pilot a bit prior to my trip to New York, and made arrangements to use his helicopter/pilot services for an hour. I actually had to take the Metro North Railway from Grand Central up to White Plains, meet the pilot there, and then 'copter it back to the city. Wasn't too much of a hassle at all, really, and the price for the flight was a little better that way too. Plus, I thought White Plains was actually a pretty cool, smaller city.
If you feel you can justify the cost of rental, I definitely recommend the experience. Granted it can feel a little goofy hanging on the edge of a rather small helicopter with no door (they're always left at the airport when you're going on a photo flight), but you're so focused on capturing the rare vantage points up there that you forget about the perceived precariousness of dangling in the sky above a city.
I've done this two places, my home Kansas City (MO), and this trip in New York. Of course the price of renting the 'copter/pilot in New York was quite a bit higher than KC, but so it goes.
A guy I know does the aerial stock photography thing for a living, though I'm more in it just for fun maybe once a year or something and when I can afford it. With a bit of justification thrown in there that an aerial image might sell and at least cover the cost of the flight.

I had a recent toboggan outing with the work at Xscape (http://www.snozonebraehead.com/html/scotland/) but I struggled to get any shots due to the v.poor indoor lighting. The one below is actually me and my boy taken by the wife but typical of what I got.
I'm still using the 18-70mm f3.5-5.6 lens that came in the box with the camera. I was thinking I needed a bigger zoom but have heard that they don't have great ability in low light so have been swaying towards a faster prime (say 50mm f1.4). Any ideas what would have improved things?

For me the problem is that there's too much going on round the edges so no attention is drawn to you & your son. Zooming with your feet would be cheaper than buying a new lens!
Gorgeous colours Phrasikleia and Nicholie.
Nice shot Yoursh - I love the steaming puddles(?). I find the tree on the left rather distracting though.
Amazing photo valdore - I'm not sure I'd be able to hang out of a helicopter door however good the opportunities were!
I got a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 for Christmas, (my first venture away from the D40 kit lens,) and am loving it. Here is a shot taken today, well now yesterday! C&C appreciated.

Need help!

I was reading about this problem just the other day...
Did you shoot in auto?
The internal meter on the camera under exposes the shot because of the perfectly white snow. "All meters are calibrated to render an exposure that will make the subject look like a middle tone in the resulting photograph." (http://www.fredparker.com/ultexp1.htm) So, your snow is perfectly gray.
In this case, a longer exposure or larger aperture (smaller f number) would have let in more light, and the image would be correctly exposed. (Your current lens probably isn't to blame :))
That xscape place looks pretty interesting. Snow... Indoors!

I love your photo Nicholie. I like how the transition from the bright carousel to the water is sudden but still smooth and well-done. Mind posting the EXIF data? :)
Gladly. Meta can be found in full here.

Camera: Nikon D90
Exposure: 0.125 sec (1/8)
Aperture: f/8
Focal Length: 18 mm
Times like those I wish I had a wide angle lens. It was a hard shot mostly cause the lights on the Carousel. Half of them were out! Since I wanted it in a stop position, I had to wait till it lined up with my spot. Reality is such a pain :p

Think you're right, I'm perhaps blaming the equipment rather than the photographer! The EXIF was shutter 1/25 (too long for fast moving) f/5.6 at 70mm. I couldn't win either way, I seem to prefer taking people shots from afar as you get more natural settings but I don't have the right 'snipers' equipment so I'll just have to get closer.
I got a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 for Christmas, (my first venture away from the D40 kit lens,) and am loving it. Here is a shot taken today, well now yesterday! C&C appreciated.
Yep, that's the kind of thing I want!

Yes, you are spot on! Might have to try more manual settings next time.

That xscape place looks pretty interesting. Snow... Indoors!
Unfortunately the sledges were moving too fast for a slower shutter, my max aperture for that lens is f/3.5 (at 18mm) so next time I'll have to move my feet! I don't see the appeal of paying for an indoor ski slope when I live in a country full of the stuff, but it's within walking distance of my house and the work paid for it so I went. Looking forward to climbing some peaks next month.
Another one of the carousel, this was my favorite until I got home and noticed the lousy background. Noob error.

High ISO bad.
http://homepage.mac.com/rost12/leica/guy.jpgI rather like the added quality the 'graininess' brings. The only negative for me is book - the combination of being very big, very black and bang centre means it dominates a bit too much. I don't think anything could be done to correct it though. Lovely shot.
I got up early this morning to go down to the coast for some sunrise shots. Unfortunately the forecast didn't come through but I still got quite a few ones I liked, this one in particular.

right. i have only gotten exposed to hdr after combing thru this forum. not sure if i like it. makes the images look too "computery" and artificial. it's almost a photographic effect instead of a photographic technique. but, to each their own.

It doesn't have to be. Some people take it to the extreme in order to make it an effect, but used sparingly it can greatly increase the dynamic range while still looking realistic.

Nice shot of my hometown. Two things I would change (improve). First, straighten the horizon. Easy to do and to not do so is a bit sloppy. Second, I personally think there's a bit too much sky and not enough skyline. I am sure you were trying to capture to interesting cloud formation, but the way the buildings appear only at the very bottom of the picture is a bit distracting. I would have tilted down a bit and tried to put more of the city in the shot, maybe somewhere along the rule of 1/3's. That way, you get a bit more of an idea what you're looking at.

Hmm, good suggestion. I do noticed that the horizon is not exactly straight. Silly me.
Yeah, I guess the photo could look better if there is more part of the city.
I like this shot is cause the broad sky and the small perspective of the city make it look as in the city is very far away when it is actually taken from a hotel at MidValley City.
Anyway why is camera stuffs sold in Malaysia so overpriced? There is not even any tax for camera stuffs yet it is freaking expensive.
Happy New Year everyone!!!
