I noticed that, too. It is officially Xmas shopping season. This episode is crammed with Apple references. Usually they'll throw some references in at the beginning and be done with it, but they're still rolling.

I liked that myTunes Special Edition Itchy & Scratchy.

Now that the 30 min "commercial" is over, here is the following apple related spoof that I liked.

- Gates and Jobs are more than frenemies, they're lovers.
- Comic book gay hurling the sledgehammer ala 1984 commercial, breaking the tyranical hold of the "mops" on the Idrones.
- Lisa striking the ipod silohuete poses.

I watched this online due to the previous discussion on it, and wasn't that entertained, I mean don't get me wrong it got a chuckle out of me but I guess I was expecting a lot more due to the posts about it. What I found more amusing was that on 'Prototype this' (didn't see it until yesterday morning) in there 'get up and go' wake up pod thing the computer that was displaying "all the current information you need when you wake up" was using Mac OS X widgets :p

I liked the parody at first but then I thought it was starting to go way too far, like all the staff ganging up on Bart with the earbuds. I very nearly cringed with the USB submarine at the end. Ugh.

Also, anyone else notice that at first the Mypod had a click wheel, and then it somehow became a white iPod touch when Lisa showed the Itchy and Scratchy cartoon? (Earlier we clearly saw the click wheel, and she was using it to control the music, and then suddenly it became a touch screen with icons AND the video turned onto the side when she moved it).

funny stuff

You'd have to have a pretty twisted sense of humor to find most of this funny. It's not offensive, it's just... tame? I dunno. I feel the same way about the Simpsons as most—stopped being really funny a while ago. I think the only part I really enjoyed was the 1984 reference and all of Steve Mobs' utterances of "insanely great."

Most of Futurama that I've seen has been far funnier than this clip... or most other clips of the Simpsons from the last few years.

Though that White Stripes appearance was pretty good.

U do realize that the same minds are behind both shows.

That doesn't mean that they both need to be running, or that they're equally as good, Futurama is far better than The Simpsons, because The Simpsons has been around forever, they have exhausted every story line, and then some, they're doing what South Park did when they ran out of stories, get topical, take something that is in the public eye, and run with it, only downside is it ages really quickly, as can't really be rebroadcast in 2 years time, as it's no longer relevant.

The Simpsons are a parody......always have been, if someone cannot find humour in this....or somehow relate to this episode as a Mac user, they either lack a sense of humour or see this as a personal attack on Apple/themselves.

Actually, they are aimed at different viewers. The simpsons was always aimed at kids with adult humour. Futurama was aimed at IT/Geeks etc. I think that people who no longer find Simpsons funny have grown up, its been 20 years. As a kid what they think of the Simpsons.....not an adult.

Technically the feature length episodes are the new season - they're each being cut up into four parts which make up a 16 episode sixth season. Sucks that it couldn't actually be sixteen brand new episodes to complement the four 'films'.

Sorry, that was very off topic of me :p

I would guess so, considering every computer I remember seeing on the show has application windows and a menu bar similar to older Mac OS's.

A little touch I really liked with this episode was in the completely unrelated plot with Homer, when he's snooping through the house and turns on the lady's computer and it made the Mac startup sound.

Hmm. More "clever" than "funny". Too many uninteresting geek jokes, like they'd been saving them all up for the last 7 years - would have been better with more of Homer (being something of an "everyman") trying to deal with the technology, not understanding why things are the way they are. Bart being a brat and doing some kind of practical joke is passe and went on too long. Missed some opportunities with other characters. Unmemorable - won't go into the classic Simpsons playbook, by any stretch of the imagination.

Besides, Comic Book Guy is definitely either a PC or Linux user, so having him in a Mapple store didn't make much sense.

Not offended or upset by the Apple/Mac/iPod/etc digs. It's more like, okay, yeah, we know it's fashionable to take a shot at them - you don't really do the cutting-edge any more - you should have been doing this 18 months or more ago, and you're just following the pack now.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and resorting to a lame gay joke when there's so many other possibilities seems like a squandered opportunity. Or just running out of material. It's like they went "err... how do we segue to the actual storyline? I know, let's have Bart say something lame, have the characters treat it as offensive, then chase him". That shtick is old. I mean, they could have gone laugh-out-loud hilarious, or really-stick-the-boot-in give-Apple-a-real-serve topical, and I would have enjoyed both. But instead they got their jokes from the opening paragraph of most recent techie blog entries, and gave us neither.

give me any of the jokes/episodes of the first 8-10 seasons over the last 10 years.

the early seasons are full of subtle and smart humor while to me the more recent seasons are full of desperate, obvious and unoriginal jokes.

this quote sums it up to me

But under Scully's tenure, The Simpsons became, well, a cartoon.... Episodes that once would have ended with Homer and Marge bicycling into the sunset (perhaps while Bart gagged in the background) now end with Homer blowing a tranquilizer dart into Marge's neck."[1]

Would love to see a parody of those lame Microsoft commercials now.
I bet everyone who works on the Simpsons uses a mac. :D:apple:

Nah, they kinda low key and not much to work with. They would get alot more milage out of Apple commercials. The snugg trendy apple guy is a goldmine for a parody.

Just think about it literally for a moment, which is what one should do with every pee joke or rant.

Even if you put a single drop of SJ pee on/in every Apple product worldwide, Steve does not have enough pee output or even potential capacity to support such a part number. He would have to raise prices substantially to decrease demand! So I say do not add pee to all products. We like lower prices.

It was pretty entertaining. The best part had to come when the said: " Your heart is as black as your turtle neck" that gave me a good chuckle.

Thus the "out of place" modifier.:p

AND that modifier helps this thread out in what way?

I find it difficult to understand why this is difficult to understand.

Oh, I get it. Your goal is to be post about things which are completely irrelevant to the OP and thread topic.

Its almost painful to see how unfunny this show has become. Besides the 1984 reference this was pretty dire imo

Id hope they could retire with dignity but its around 10 years too late for that

That's even better than how I was going to try to phrase it. At least the good seasons are easily accessible on DVD and don't get old re-watching ...

Like most of the Simpsons' humor, it didn't feel very refined--that is, it could have been much better if more time were spent on it. The only time I laughed is when Lisa got sad and the camera shifted to the sad silhouette ad.

And I don't think it's because I "obviously have no sense of humor." There's a snobbishness about finding things funny; people always seek to distinguish themselves, and separating themselves by claiming to possess the rare, golden "sense of humor" is one of those ways. As often as not, people who make that claim have a particularly crude sense of humor, not a particularly refined one.

So don't feel bad for not finding it funny. :D

I thought the 1984 reference was quite smart, the simpsons is quite good at accomodating older viewers with intertextual references that would otherwise fly right over the average kid viewers head's.

The humour was a bit forced though, too many gags. It was pulling too many punches. Fanboy's will instantly hate this, it got a chuckle out of me

In a nutshell it wasn't subtle enough and was really very witty either. If Family Guy parodied Apple I could see it being ALOT more funny.

the Simpsons have always loved Apple (yes they are real people !)

their life stories are stored on macs, one day (in year 1) Groening's team lost one episode because of a hard drive failure.

some company managed to repair it, and has used it ever since on it's mac world expo booth.

the Apple engineers love the Simpsons as well, Paul Mercer (Finder Team) used to invite people at his house every thursday to watch the simpsons. followed by twin peaks.

Nothing.

Too many people here are too dense to realize that this comedic parody of Apple is actually an acknowledgment of Apple's strength, Apple's consumer power, and a confirmation of Apple's mass appeal and worldwide pop-level popularity.

You never spend an entire TV episode mocking a company with zero importance, or a company that has little appeal/recognition to the masses. You only make an entire episode parodying a company which actually matters, a company that actually plays an important role in gazillions of consumers worldwide.

How many jokes or parodies do you hear about Motorola? Zero. Why? Because Motorola is a Nothing-Company. It's a company that no longer matters, completely meaningless in the eyes of most consumers.

Conclusion: Apple should actually be flattered that they are being parodied. ;)

Imitation (and parody) are the best forms of flattery.

From 5F11:

Marge tells Homer Bill Gates is here to see him. Homer panicks, and tells
Marge to get out of here so it doesn't look like a two-bit operation.

Bill Gates: Mr. Simpson?
Homer: You don't look so rich...
Bill Gates: Don't let the haircut fool you, I am exceedingly wealthy.
Homer: [quietly] Get a load of the bowl-job, Marge!

Your Internet ad was brought to my attention, but I can't figure out what, if
anything, Compuglobalhypermeganet does, so rather than risk competing with you, I've decided simply to buy you out.

Homer and Marge quietly discuss this proposal.

Homer: I reluctantly accept your proposal!
Bill Gates: Well everyone always does. Buy 'em out, boys!
[Gates' lackeys trash the room.]
Homer: Hey, what the hell's going on!
Bill Gates: Oh, I didn't get rich by writing a lot of checks! [insane
laughter]

There's being sensible, and that's the writers actually accepting that the show isn't of the same quality it was in it's first nine/ten seasons, and then there's stupidity, which is Fox trying to milk the franchise for all it's worth.
I'm a member at the largest Simpsons message board on the internet, I've interracted with Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein (former writers and showrunners), I probably know more about The Simpsons than anyone else at MR...Season 19 may have, in my opinion, been one of the best seasons in a while (since 15 or 16 at least), but if the show had ended years ago we wouldn't have the crap that makes up a lot of seasons 11 to 14, or *shudders* Seasons 17 and 18, which are my least favourite seasons.

What's with everyone thinking Microsoft would have paid for that episode? If anything its Apple that would of written a large cheque for it - you can't buy advertising like that, especially in the run up to Christmas.

A few people have commented there were Apple ads shown around it, you think that was a coincidence? It wouldn't surprise me if there was a deal between Fox and Apple for it to be shown in December as well.

I don't know if Mr Jobs is a Simpsons fan but he'll be laughing all the way to the bank and I'm sure Mr Jobs and Apple will be making references to it in the future as well.

I think a lot of people missed the point on this one. The jokes seem to just point out the things that mac haters always say. Everything else I’ve seen on the Simpsons seems to support the idea that the writers are fans of apple products.

I made a comment on the macenstein post late last night...
Hey Doc,
I took the joke a different way than you. To me it seemed like they were just pointing out all the stupid things apple haters would say about apple and not really making fun of apple. There have been a lot of apple references on the simpsons and they have always been positive, with the last one coming with the halloween special. They did a charlie brown spoof and instead of a record player being stopped at the party, it was an iPod…which I took as it meaning that the iPod is what represents the digital age of music.

And earlier today someone wrote...
I have to agree with dizzy. The whole episode was about stereotypes and how they are generally a misconception, what with the whole new muslim kid and everything. It has nothing to do with The Simpsons making fun of Apple, they are saying that all the stereotypes about Apple are just as stupid as saying every muslim is a terrorist. It isn’t true and shouldn’t be thought of that way. Don’t take it so hard. I found it quite funny myself. I do love the simpsons. It isn’t at its peak, and is no where near as good as it used to be, but honostly, I like the new episodes and the subtle humor that the writers have taken on.

Funny thing is when I wrote this I was so tired I didn't even realize the rest of the episode followed this same idea of stereotypes, but it really does back up my first feelings about joke.

I loved this and hope to see more shows and publications totally bash Apple. I'm sick and tired of Apple bashing Microsoft instead of concentrating on their own issues. I'm not saying Microsoft is infallible, to the contrary, Microsoft has plenty of problems, but Apple has turned into a Nazi/cult organization. Go into an Apple store, it's like they are all drugged "Apple good, Microsoft bad, trust in Apple, we are infallible, what you don't trust us...death to you". It's the same mantra over and over with Apple store employees.

But let's look at Apple the past few months...launch of MobileMe...what a joke complete clusterfuk. And how many software updates have we had for the iPhone 3G since its launch...

Apple needs to spend less time drinking it's own cool aide, stop wasting time and energy bashing Microsoft and concentrate on doing a better job. I sure hope Steve Jobs saw this Simpson's episode, maybe it will slap some sense into him.

Hey Steve...Bill Gates is retired from Microsoft, you've done some good stuff, so get over it, the war between you and Bill is over, get back to business.

"I'm here at Mapple HQ way down under the sea" :D and the fact that the Submarine to get there is in the shape of a USB.....LOL

I love it.

Just wondering now, how funny Steve Jobs found it when his kids (may have/not) were watching it, they would have been like "Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad..............better get here!!!!" :D:D:D:D

Now, lets see a Microcrap Windblows DeMista episode :D Now that! Would make my day.

Cheers!

I just can't believe it took them this long to do a substantive spoof of the iPod...

there was an episode a few seasons back (it might have been a halloween episode) where they showed the future springfield, and iPods had enslaved humanity, and were using their earbud headphones to whip their human captives. it was hilarious!

Well, I thought it was hilarious!

Homer looking at MyCube.
Homer: "Okay ... What does it do?"
Mapple Salesman: "The question should be, 'What can I do for it.' "

The way some people worship Apple products is the reason this made me laugh. That episode was just a fantastic commentary on today's modern society (in the US at least).

totally, when Steve Mops appeared to announce something new and the people quickly took out money out of their wallets without it being announced was really funny!!!!!

It was funny, though I don't think I laughed all that hard. They have had better episodes, mentioning Apple doesn't make the show many more amusing than if they hadn't tried to spoof Apple. Though I will second the person that says it just goes to show how important Apple is to our society.

I have to admit i stopped watching the simpsons years ago because i just dont find it funny any more. but this episode was awesome :D not only did it make me laugh at certain points but it was all so true, every detail down to the apple employees superior attitudes, when steve jobs came on to speak everyone dropped everything and opened their wallets LOL!! I could understand why some people are upset and are bashing the simpsons though, its the very people that defend apple to the death and worship steve jobs lol. I guess they feel like they are being insulted too. but that was a great episode and the spoof was right on point.... Apple products are great hence the reason why i own so many, its just some of the its loyal customers and its elitist i am god CEO and all his cult followers who look down on everyone else that the show was making fun of.

i actually liked the apple logo though.. bitten on both sides :D

I or maybe some of us have seen the logo before. A small group of artists where going to do a series of cartoons done my computer. The cartoon was 'AppleCore' and it used the 2 bitten sided apple.

How about when Homer started his own internet business and all it was a table , a steno pad and a phone. It got so big that Gates came in and offered to acquire his business and they wreck his table. I guess it was only a matter of time before Apple made it there.

This was excellently done. I am a full believer that most of the cultish stuff apple users are known for is just that: cultish. I use a Mac because is far better than the PC for my uses. I have no care about the "religious" side of "Macness".
Back to topic, this stuff is so true and brings more publicity to Apple anyway.

"He's like a God, he knows exactly what we want!"

I think it's "He's like a God that knows exactly what we want."

I thought it was okay. The small bits were excellent, like Homer begging the MyCube to tell him to do something, or the MyCube's light indicating that it's off. That's some good satire. These days, though, the Simpsons always manages to take some menial concept and blow it out of proportion into some ridiculous scenario that only the most immature of viewers would appreciate (ie. Bart spontaneously sabotaging Mobs' speech and the employees flaying him with earbuds... that was a little stupid).

The old Simpsons of the nineties is gone. Simple jokes and awkward but funny reactions from Homer were what made the show. Passing off stupidity as something normal and commonplace in Springfield, instead of blowing it out of proportion and just making the entire show look like a ridiculous waste of time and energy.

Futurama is better than the Simpsons now, but I don't think it's better than the Simpsons of the early-to-mid nineties. Those were the days.

I agree, its much funnier, and they have done some Microsoft parodying on it, too.

The last Apple joke Simpsons done was crap ("iPhones now 20 cents" announcement), but this one was good like I said before.

i know im probably missing something here as i do not understand the importance of 1984 (was it a book?)

"1984" (the book) is the origin of the phrase "Big Brother is watching you", which I'm sure you're familiar with. It is sometimes scary, in this day and age, to see how prophetic that book is becoming. In the book, citizens are constantly being monitored through their telescreens, and punished for going against the wishes of the government. Today we have the internet and terrorist watchlists and keyword scanning and surveillance cameras everywhere.

In the book, the government has become so good at revisionist history and self-serving propaganda that they have entire divisions of employees whose job is to erase references, rewrite books, burn incriminating articles, etc.

Citizens are so naive and brainwashed that they'll accept whatever their leader tells them to be good, even if their own instincts tell them it is not. Even if it is worse than what they had before, as long as Big Brother says it is better, they accept that it is better and that they must be mistaken in thinking otherwise. You can see why Apple chose to use this illustration when it comes to computers...

If that link sends you too the 1984 Macintosh ad that has been mimicked and mocked for the past 24 years, and put Apple on the map for a short while, then yes.

I hope that the ad isn't new to you. :D

p.s. After sitting in an Apple store for a short while, and by the way many iPhone users act and how they react to every new phone that comes out that isn't even trying to be called an "iPhone killer"..... YES the Simpsons have effectively captured the way many Apple users, Zealots, and fanpersons act on a daily basis.
