I had a great idea for a reality show. Instead of kicking people out of the house you would keep adding them in until people cracked and left. People wouldn't be isolated, they could invite friends and family members over to visit.

Imagine a yoga class and a bible study and a lan party going on in the same house at the same time.

THere would be a pot of money and when you leave you get your share based on how long you were in the house and how many people there are. This amount is lessened if more than one person leaves at once.

I don't understand the popularity of prime-time reality TV. It boggles my mind how people like to watch that tripe. That being said, my housemates and most of my friends are big fans of some shows, and I occassionally find myself watching with them.

I am a HUGE fan, however, of the real reality TV, like the Food Network, HGTV, etc. Don't give me drama, give me practical stuff!

"I watch television because you don't know what it will do if you leave it in the room alone."
— Unknown

One of my favorite things about being at college is that the only times I ever sit in front of a television are to watch a movie or play a video game, both of which I do with friends.

I do actively dislike reality shows, though, and never watch them when I'm at home. (I do watch television at home, just not reality shows.) I just don't understand the attraction of throwing some of the most petty aspects of humanity into such high relief.

I like shows like the Amazing Race for the travel & stunts, but dislike all the trash talking and 'interpersonal drama' (it all seems edited to be overblown, and fake). It's the places they go to, things they see, and stuff they do that keeps me watching.

While I like the concept of survivor I don't think it's really about surviving out in the environments. Some contestants would die if left stranded on their own (like that one woman who cried about the dead baby bat). They are survivors of the game, and not the elements. Oh and one thing that got me during survivor 2 were the product placements. They were completely horrible and transparent ads (i.e. 'The winners of the challenge will get Doritos<tm> and Mountain Dew<tm>).

Fear factor is ok, but the nasty food stuff is just for a gross out. Since it's a show you know what they are feeding you isn't going to kill you so you shouldn't be afraid... and isn't that the point?

I love reality TV. Not because I think it is "real" but it is just so damn funny. These people are so screwed up.

Anyway, in my opinion there are 2 reasons why you might passionately dislike reality TV:

1) Because everyone else loves it.
2) Because everyone else hates it.

If you just don't like it, then don't watch. But I think the people who passionately hate reality TV just do it to fit in with the crowd, thereby being cool, or by going against the grain, thereby being a rebel...and also cool. It just depends on how you look at it.

Regardless, I respect everyone's opinion but wish so many people didn't have a knee jerk reaction to hate reality TV.

True! I'd never thought of it as reality TV, but those kind of shows are great. Probably helps that its creative rather than destructive. What we usually think of as reality television is usually all about screwing your opponents as much as possible. Food Network, HGTV, &c, on the other hand, are all about creation and rebuilding. Stuff like "Trading Spaces" is probably the closest to standard reality TV, but rather than trying to screw over the other team you're trying your best to please them.

Reality TV is stupid because none of it actually involves reality. In reality, Donald Trump, doesn't give entrepreneurs with no college education a shot at a job with a $250,000/year salary, does he? In reality, people don't eat worms and eyeballs, ride bikes across tightropes, and go swimming in pools full of squid and fish guts for $50k like in Fear Factor, do they? If they wanted to make that show more like reality TV, maybe they should get some average, everyday people to perform in it. Instead, it's always a bunch of big-t*tty blonde girls in tight clothes because otherwise, most guys probably wouldn't watch it. It's all precontrived, fabricated crap that television networks create so the masses can eat it up.

DINNER TIME!

Edit: And I had to add this in because the guy's post above me mentioned it--Trading Spaces! That's a great show, and probably the closest thing to Reality TV out there (especially when somebody hates their new room...and it shows :)).

Wrong! I hate and I do mean HATE reality television because it is cheap (no actors, no set, no script per se) and appeals to the lowest common denominator. I have so many more things to do than sit and watch grass grow or people flare their nostrils at each other. I don't hate reality television to rebel I hate it because it is an insult to call it entertainment.

The fact that a show called The Real World on MTV actually holds auditions... I mean, HELLOOOO?!!? The Real World? Auditions? Since when does anybody have to audition to live in the real world?

d00d
Feb 18, 2004, 12:21 PM
There are only two reality shows I've liked. The rest I passionately hate because the people in the show purposely blow everything out of proportion, more than half of them are actually failed actors because they're the only ones with the time to go to the auditions. The contests are stupid. The emotions are fake. It's a step below soap opera (because at least those shows have people with some small measure of talent). The more these shows become popular, the fewer shows I actually want to watch appear on TV.

That said I love/loved:
1) Joe Schmoe Show (the perfect parody of a reality show)
2) American Chopper (the show is just great)

I want to say I don't but I just thought about it, and there are lots of reality TV shows I watch.

At first I typed "I only watch Survivor." But:

I watch lots of news programs. I watch just about anything on Science, Discover, TechTV, or History Channel, including American Chopper, Monster House, Monster Garage, etc.

I hate all the Americal Idol, Big Brother, Wedding this, blind that, yadda yadda. And yet they are always on. My wife loves that crap.

Having voted that I hardly watch any, and then contemplating how many I do watch... I wonder how many other hypocrites voted No, not interested and No, actively dislike it and are lying to themselves?

I despise those stupid reality shows, and don't think very much of the people who live for them and never shut up about them, either.

Give me a good documentary on something, any day. Sadly, though, Discovery and TLC are starting to get caught up in reality-esque crap, too-- like with those moronic neanderthals who build custom motorcycles, and the let's-demolish-and-redecorate-each-other's-houses crapola.

I hate reality TV shows so much, I get pissed off when find the cable box tuned to one when I turn on the TV. I wish my TiVo had a feature where it would just randomly change the channel if something I gave 'thumbs down' to was starting on the current channel, so I don't have to assault my eyes with even one second of that tripe.

Gah! I knew that wasn't the right title! You're right, "Trading Spaces" is a horrible show: too long, too angsty (if I remember correctly). "Changing Rooms," on the other hand, is fantastic. Thank goodness for BBC America.

On a similar note, the American "Junkyard Wars" is nowhere near the quality of the British version. The Brits are just so much more sportsmanlike and entertaining to listen to.

Amen! However, I don't know that I would consider it a reality TV show because it predated the reality explosion. Once upon a time there were a few creative, quality shows that involved competition of some kind and this was before the term "reality show" was invented. Some of them were essentially game shows. Robot Wars and Iron Chef come to mind. These are fun, funny, shows that don't take themselves too seriously. The competition is sportsmanlike, the losers gracious.

The new detestable breed of reality show is distinguished by a penchant for social engineering--pitting players against each other in mean-spirited Machiavellian schemes and devoting far too much camera time to private interviews with jilted contestants who gossip bitterly about their opponents and fellow teammates. It's reality soap opera. And this description does not even begin to describe the Fox TV breed (though other networks occasionally borrow the style) of drivel which mixes in pranks, gags, double turns and freak show gimmicks to lure unthinking slack-jawed yokels to their little square glass gods.

I think reality tv is sick an people should get shot for watching it. I heard a few rumors that the sci-fi channel got sued because of there wierd reality thing (i think its called scare tactics or sometin like that) and they showed a nude person on a commercial plus the commercials for it shows sickning images. If i was 5 i'd know id puke if i saw the commercials.

BTW: i think howard stern should remain on the radio forever and i have never heard of a kid below the age of 14 that listens to him. And by the age of 14 you know what an*l se* is and if you don't then please become a real teenager and read up on it.

LOL! Dude, I was even younger than that when I heard Howard Stern on the radio (12 or 13, and def. 14), particularly because my father drove me to class (elementary and H.S.) while listening to that on the radio. And a second "lol" on the "read up on it" comment.

Note: The following comment could offend: It's only been recently that the people in Maine actually did something intelligent for a change...they finally adopted Howard Stern after so many years of it not being allowed up here.

I agree with the Howard Stern posts; Howard is a genious. I suppose his program (radio or otherwise) could be construed as a "reality show." Howard certainly has a high appreciation level from this bruthah.

Also, yes, the sci-fi channel (not sure if it was sued or not) did have some "mature content" warnings for this show which I think is bad-a$$, Mad Mad House. On the show they make the guests of the house drink blood, go naked, etc, and it's possible the commercials reflect that.

I was blown away when I saw it.

..and sorry if this is off topic but since it was already mentioned: anyone who thinks Fox News doesn't have a bias should take a poll on the politcal backgrounds of those who consider themselves dedicated viewers of the station...if you wanna watch that kinda news programming that's cool and all...but don't kid yourself about what it really is...

If you're talking about Big Brother, that's on Channel 4, which is funded by commercials not the licence fee.

The beeb does put out reality crap as well - Fame Academy anyone? Presented by the most annoying and talentless man on telly - Patrick Kielty.

Perhaps the worst talent/reality show EVER starts this Friday on ITV. Called 'No Talent Required' it's about three cleaners and three bin-men fighting it out with each other to get a number one record.

This is a chance to see the real life action of those that protect us. Although there is an article in the Globe today about complaints from NY officials bout the show.

I'm with you - I watch maybe an hour of TV a day if I'm lucky. I just have far too many other interests and actiivties that I enjoy doing that I couldn't be bothered to sit in front of a TV on my butt watching TV, playing video games, etc. Sitting in front of a computer screen at work all the time is bad enough! At least on my computer I can be productive, earn income and do things I enjoy, but I just really don't have a desire to watch a lot of TV.

 Recently i have found myself watching less and less TV, and i think reality TV is partly to blame. The reason is TV is becoming so - for want of a better word -crap. If you don't have Sky Digital (UK) forget about it, and if you do, you have hundreds of channels and there is still nothing good on. (except Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis! :)) This reality garbage isn't just on TV though. God i have never even watched Big Brother 5 (yes, 5!) and i know all their names, life histories, etc. It's in newspapers, on the radio, in conversations,.........list is endless. Is there no escape at all?

I completely agree with you, it is everywhere, and there is no escape. Let me reiterate and expand on my above post...

People’s lives have become so pathetic and boring that they have to watch other people’s lives on TV for any type of excitement or adventure – how sad is that? Here’s a wild idea – why don’t you get your fat lazy butt off the couch, and instead of sitting around watching TV, why don’t you go out and actually DO something – maybe then your life won’t seem to boring such that you have to relegate yourself to watching reality crap – or TV in general for that matter. Don’t get me wrong, I probably watch a couple shows on TV a week, which is fine (everything in moderation, right?), but I have better things to do with my life than sit in front on a TV screen for endless hours letting my brain vegetate at the complete crap the stations are broadcasting – as I said before, at least in front of my computer screen I am being productive, making money, and challenging myself. Go out and play sports, get a hobby, go traveling, see the world, meet new people, hell, even try reading (who does that anymore?) and actually exercising your brain and your imagination. I just don’t have time for the crap that’s on TV anymore, reality TV being the biggest culprit of them all...

Kay, I’m done ranting - for now...

Haha nice one Shard. and for those of you who still do read, (the few) I thought I'd recommend a couple of books to try and read in the next week or two.

1) Good Omens (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0441003257/qid=1091638222/sr=ka-1/ref=pd_ka_1/002-9767458-1076059) - By Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

2) Walking on Glass (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0349101787/qid=1091638280/sr=ka-1/ref=pd_ka_1/002-9767458-1076059) - By Iain Banks. (Although the photo in the link is of "Canal Dreams" )

Hehe just to fight reality TV on some small level. :)

Thanks Burns – I could go on and on, but it’s kind of pointless – any of the (reality) TV junkies I’d be directing my comments to aren’t reading posts in these forums anyway – they’re too busy sitting on their couch watching crap… ;)

And thanks for the literary recommendations - I'll add them to my too-long list. :)

I spend my time reading these forums instead of a lot of TV. Feel much better about this than when I spent a lot of my item watching TV. It is for the most part mindless. I still think that something like "NYPD 24/7" gives a glimpse into the real life of the police, hero's.

I watched about a half dozen episodes of The Apprentice<sp?> and liked what I saw.

Most of the shows I just roll my eyes at, but "The Swan" (gotta love FOX) is the only one that I found morally<sp?> objectional.

Not that I watch it but Fear Factor, IMO, is a game show, not a reality TV show.

The only TV show I try and make time for is "Law & Order" on Wed. nights (I don't have cable). When I had cable I made time for L&W at least once each night. :D

TV in general is so bad that I dont ever turn it on unless its for a baseball game, and now I have been watching some of the summer games. I did see that American Choppers show a few times and that was cool, but reallity tv just blows. Its good that the networks are showing this garbage because gives me a better reason not to watch tv and go out and have more fun.
