I have a family member that wants to buy me an iPhone for Christmas, but with the small rumor that there may be a 32gb version coming, I want to know what you think about getting one as a gift before Macworld?

If it's a free gift, then definitely accept the gift and be happy.

Ask for the cash instead.

There is no proof that an updated iPhone will be coming out any time soon or at Macworld, so you could just be passing off an awesome gift. I'd say go ahead and get it. Make sure that you get the receipt for it.

i would hate to have an iphone as a gift and then be stuck with the expensive plan if i wasnt ready to take it on

Ask for the cash instead.
That's tacky if you say that. If you want to go that road, I would suggest asking for an apple giftcard instead, telling them you don't know what you want.

Maybe they already have an ATT plan?

It depends on what values does your family member holds to, if you don't want the iphone but the money and you think he doesn't mind you ask it for it then go ahead.
Considering it's a gift I wouldn't be too picky, and again this is going to depend on how open is your family member, some people may not get quite well what GBs are :o http://seoagora.com/img/308/s08e1024rvou/champagne.gifhttp://seoagora.com/img/589/d08l1104oulu/smiley2.gif

well chances are they dont already have a data plan. maybe im wrong but it is something to consider as the iphone simply isnt a one time cost

Yeah, it sure is a money sucker.
SouthernMac, do you already have a plan with ATT or are they paying for a subsidized phone? Because there is a big price difference

It can be one-time if you get an unlocked phone and go with a t-mobile pay-as-you-go.

get it. there's not much hardware to improve on that's very drastic. Maybe a more powerful and efficient ARM processor or more memory.

A good definition of contradiction all in one sentence!

I don't have AT&T. Obviously, I am aware that there is a monthly bill that comes with the phone, but that is not a problem. I am speaking strictly in terms of the phone itself.

If you're ready for the bills then go for it.
