Never ever except when referring to the automotive lighting company which isn't very often.

Since I'm a valley girl (silicon valley, ha!), I used to use "hella" quite often back in the day.

When I left and lived in NY, I started replacing "hella" with "mad".

Now that I'm back and back with my friends I grew up with, "hella" has made a comeback.

:D

Yep it's definately a nor cal saying. I am from so cal but am going to college in the south. So if I go back to Cali and say y'all, I will be angry. Same goes for all of my friends who went to like Berkeley, if they start saying hella.

I used to use it a lot in junior high/high school.

Since college not so much (except when I'm being intentionally sarcastic).

It really is a Bay Area thing, just like "pop" is used in lieu of "soda" in some parts of the US.
Same goes for all of my friends who went to like Berkeley, if they start saying hella.

A bit ironic, no? ;)

I hear people say hella all the time. Maybe because I live in the bay area. :D

No I don't and I hate it when ppl use it. I just want to hit them with my car.

PLUS! it doesn't make sense. "i hella use it" = "I hell use it"

See? makes no sense.
The wanna-be cool kids. I'm not saying that's you, but it's like that where I live.
if it truly is a Nor-Cal thing, then yes, it's stupid when non-californians use it. However, I'm from Chicago and I use "Y'all".:o:D

lostfan916
Dec 3, 2008, 01:42 AM
Yup... used a lot here in Sac, what can I say. But I don't use it a lot, just when talking informally to friends and what not. It's kind of a subconscious thing, I don't even realize I'm using it haha. :D

its kind of like how us Australians say "but" at the end of our sentence while conversing like we are going to say something again, but dont.

"I was gonna go to the shop, but…" and then you allow someone else to talk.

if you try and explain it and give an example sentence it sounds odd and stupid. same with "hella" and other colloquialisms.

Nor-Cal, short for Northern California. Yes, "hella" is definitely a Northern California term; even those from Southern California are rarely familiar with the expression.

In case it's not already clear, the term is short for "hell of a lot of."

I only ever use it to describe the temperature when it is hot out. And even then only when the temperature reaches the "hella" range.

I only use it with another middleclass English friend o' mine who enjoys a spot of the South Park, pippip.

Dr. P - Oh did you book the tickets for Turandot?
Sir. J- Is it coming to town?
Dr. P - Why of course, it'll be at the royal Opera house.
Sir. J- Marvellous, that'll be hella fantastic.

Glad it isn't just me, and it must be a NorCal thing (I'm in Sacramento as well). No-one back home (Nebraska) uses it, nor back at home (Las Vegas) uses it either. Certainly none of my relative back home (Oklahoma) use it, let alone heard of it..

But I feel like going up to whoever is saying it.. and slapping the smeg out of them.

I am from Connecticut too. I suppose "mad" is pretty popular. You have to go up to worcester-boston-cape cod to get the "wicked" and I don't hear anyone say "hella".

We do say "package store" when referring to a place that sells alcohol which no one else says.

You mean 'packy'?

Wicked is New England-wide, and I don't think it's going anywhere as it's been around forever. 'Mad' on the other hand I would file with things like 'izzle/shizzle/fizzle', 'hella' and 'tight.' Only said for ironic intent at this point.

Haha! I have never heard of 'hella' but I do hear the word 'like' an awful lot more than is really necessary. What amazes me is that people, like, even type it when they write!

I'm from litchfield county...a good number of people say wicked, though I'd say we're more a real part of new england than, say fairfield county. I also went to boarding school/go to college with a lot of people from the Boston area, also. I did grow up with a bit of a New England accent as well...which my parents don't have (they're not from NE), I say 'lahhg'/log and 'fahhg'/fog, among others.

I do like 'package store'...I'm pretty sure that's something completely Connecticut, nobody knows what I'm talking about if I mention one.
