Hello all. Recently, I've seen a video of Darfur and the children being abused since they were four years old. This greatly saddened me about how the world revovled around me while I'm here living in America with a good wife, sister, brother, family, car, house, clothes, shelther, and food.
I just want some input from the MacRumors community on what you guys believe should a basic human life should be.
Here is my list
Food
Shelter
Family
Love
A Macintosh :P
I really believe that we should currently do more than what we are doing in order to stop this international crisis of genocide. It truly does sadden me.
Thank you to everyone who contributes to this thread.
Please do not go into politics or economics on this matter. This is only about what the basic human life should be. What should be allowed/should not be.

we are definitly very privileged and i wont lie, i often take it for granted.
funny how some people think they are better than others just because they happened to be born in a more well off family by pure CHANCE
ill add a sense of belonging/purpose within a community to your list

1. Love for God
2. Love/Marriage
3. Children
4. Work
5. Tech Stuff :)
Exactly in that order

Two people have mentioned high tech products. I can hardly do anything without my computer but I actually know successful people who have never used one to this day.
The first 4 on the OP's list, plus faith, are basic needs.

Faith in a higher power? No thanks.
Unfailing faith in myself, absolutely necessary.
What we do need:
1) Food
2) Shelter
3) Safety
Everything after that is a luxury

Faith in a god is hardly a something everyone needs, especially if you pick the wrong one.
1. Food/shelter/community
2. Sense of belonging.
3. Love
4. Music (it really is vital to human survival)

While I disagree with your faith statement (and find it completely unnecessary that you felt the need to belittle everyone else), I do agree that Food and Shelter are necessary for a good life. People would be surprised how happy they can be just by helping someone else out.
So:
1) Faith
2) Food
3) Shelter
4) Helping others

I wanted to say the exact same thing, but I didn't want to be responsible for a downhill religious discussion that got the thread closed (that's usually what happens as soon as religion is brought up). Plenty of people live great lives, though, without religious faith, so I wouldn't call it a necessity.
(and find it completely unnecessary that you felt the need to belittle everyone else)
I don't think it was belittling at all. He pointed out that he disagreed that faith in God is necessary to live a good life and offered his own positive spin on the statement. I don't think he meant it to be insulting, nor do I think it was.

Jimmy Valvano once said that we should do three things every day: We should think, we should laugh, and we should cry.

and ill say music is hardly something everyone needs by that logic;)
to each his own, just dont belittle someone's faith if you dont want someone to belittle your values. its important to them and they are entitiled to that opinion

just by all of you saying things like this, you are sending the thread down that rabbit hole. Can't resist? Why not just state your values and move on.
That is the issue with these threads sadly.
Ah well Merry ...er...Happy ...Holida....um have a great December :D

Mayhaps. But I have yet to find anyone who doesn't enjoy a beat, even deaf people love to feel musical vibrations, but there are millions of perfectly happy people living without a religion or faith.

I knew my list needed five things, but I could only think of four!

Aside from the basics (food, water, shelter, clothing), all you need is love--love of God (if you believe in God), love of your fellow humans, love of your planet, etc... Imagine what the world would be like if everyone truly put love first.

Perhaps everyone should listen to Imagine by John Lennon tonight :p Good for the soul. Or even better, David Bowie's cover.

Without that, the entire human race would perish in just over a century. Actually, a great theme for a science fiction novel, if not already done.

I just threw up a lil bit after reading ppl putting God first and their family second.

You can choose to believe in the wrong God? Hmhmm didn't know that.

Sorry to the OP, but this is a social discussion and will elicit social/religious responses. It needs to be in the PRSI.

I do respect other ppls beliefs and religions. In fact, I'm the first one to defend other ppl for their religious beliefs when they are under attack. I just don't see how one could put their family second in any situation.

Respect. Respect to all living things. Respect to eachother in whatever your beliefs are. Just simple, un-adulterated Respect.
I believe that pretty much covers many if not all of what it is needed to be human.

..and that is the key YOU don't understand that. But it is someones value, so why question it? There is a lot of things I do not understand about people, but if I chose to call them out on it....well i would certainly never leave the forums.;)
