Looking for suggestions of a free, or cheap program I could use to digitize a few old tapes.
Essentially, it has to be something like WinDOS Sound Recorder. I want to plug my old Walkman into the line-in on my MBP, hit "record", and produce an MP3 or an MP4 file. I do not really need any frills like noise reduction, track detection, etc.
My tapes are primarily audiobooks.

I use garageband to record my old vinyls. it's as simple as you say, plug it into the line in and press record. It even exports it straight into itunes for you.

Now that's an idea!
I have never even installed GB on my machine - I am not a musician, so I figured I will never need it.
The only disadvantage I see here is that GB is huge (in terms of disk space), but I will probably try it.

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is much smaller, and you get the satisfaction of supporting the open source movement!
