That looks like a great deal.

Some of this software I might not want. Why would I want the antivirus software? I thought that my Mac is secure enough as it is. That's the whole reason I bought a Mac, so I could forget the slow antivirus software that makes a Computer running Windows slow.

Nice line-up. I think I'll be getting this bundle!

Their Anit-Virus software is less intrusive, yet still effective - so it won't slow your system. There are very few, if not any working virus' for Mac OS X, but it's there incase. One can be made at anytime, there just aren't enough Mac users to be targeted by those who make the virus.

I have to agree, but it not wholly for Mac viruses, its to help stop the spread of Windows viruses... I just installed ClamXAV since the 'Apple recommends anti-virus' news... granted that turned out to be old news but XAV has already detected and deleted a few coming in from my g/f's Windows laptop over some of our external harddrives.

At least their not offering McAfee or Norton which should be avoided like the plague.

Because there are virually zero viruses for the Mac nowadays, I think Apple would be the first to take steps at the OS level to squash any new one that were to appear. A bunch of "exploits" have been found in the past 10 years or so, Apple hears of it and then quietly patches them with those Security Updates. It's amazing to me how Mac antivirus companies can still be taking in millions of dollars on their software for so long now.

EDIT: I never bother with these bundles, I have to say this one looks like a great deal though, I will probably jump on it.

That's good to know. As long as it doesn't slow down my Mac and helps protect it, I'm up for it.

Has anyone used Norton Anti-virus? If it's just as good, I'd rather go with it because it's free.

I'd say the main point of anti-virus software on the mac right now is to avoid passing on viruses to windows users. That benefits everyone who uses the internet, as machines that are owned by botnets etc help cause more spam etc for everyone.

there just aren't enough Mac users to be targeted by those who make the virus.

That's a common mistake people always come up when they talk about virus on Mac OS X. It's not the number of unit that is important, it's the structure of the OS itself that is the cause. It's done in a way that a virus just couldn't access to your root files and cause damage without your permission.

Another common mistake is that there's malware for Mac. Just make a little search in google and you will find a bunch. They're pretty much ineffective thought. No real thread from virus, although there's been one created that could infect Macs but was just experimental and was causing no damage. There's also been some trojans, that use iChat to infect other machines. So in sort, it's just useless for now to use anti-virus.

Has anyone used Norton Anti-virus? If it's just as good, I'd rather go with it because it's free.

Norton is one of the worst, really.

I would say it's a combination of several reasons why there are no viruses for Macs.

Here's an article about it:

Ah, well, figure the Gourmet, the Snitch and the Genius made it worth $49.99.

I like these bundles, but I've read other people on the internets that feel burned by the fact that they're not eligible (or as eligible) for upgrades or bug fixes as compared to people who bought that single program straight out.

Of course, from the developer's point of a view, it's a "teaser" or "taster" price by being a part of a bundle, but if the upgrade eligibility path is not stated specifically, a lot of confusion and frustration could occur on both sides.

Great bundle! This is possibly the best bundle so far. There's several I've been meaning to buy for a while, and several others I'll definitely get some use out of.

I'd definitely make good use of these, though I'd never buy them at their normal prices:
- Drive Genius 2
- RapidWeaver 4
- MacPilot 3
- WhatSize 4
- iVolume 3

And these two have been near the top of my to-buy list for a long time!

- LittleSnitch 2
- KeyCue 4

Overall, a good bunch of Apps, especially for the price. But in my opinion, the real gem here is Little Snitch. If you don't know about this product, I suggest you you check it out. I do not run any of my machines without it. To me, this product is the real barrier to phishing scams and any other device, server, software, etc. that wants to "talk" to my machine through any given port. It not only alerts you, but tells you who is asking to get in, through what port as well as letting you set rules and if these rules are permanent or not.

It originally got its roots from people (ahem - people with "unlicensed" applications) wanting software that would detect when apps would "call home" to detect if that said application had a legitimate license (hence the name "Little Snitch"). But it has so many other uses these days. So many.

To be honest, some of these apps I do not understand why they even sell since there are free or even opensource counterparts which can do just the same...

Especially iVolume is a mystery to me since iTunes itself has audio normalisation;
MacPilot can just as easily be replaced by the Secrets prefpane from the guys that developed QuickSilver;
VirusBarrier has ClamXAV as a counterpart;
LittleSnitch is tougher but is only just another frontend for ipfw just like WaterRoof en NoobProof;

WhatSize is a category of it's own. There is SpaceFinder which is 2.5$ cheaper or someone with the necessary knowledge can whip up a terminal script which can tell you the same things...

KeyCue is useful yet overpriced for what it does, same goes for DefaultFolderX and MacGourmet.

Drive Genius is indeed a great tool and RapidWeaver I've never used so I can not judge...

So yeah, the bundle itself is great value for money whichever way you spin it especially thanks to Drive Genius but some apps are just not worth buying...

Awesome bundle... had a question regarding another App on the "special offer" section in the checkout, Data Rescue 2. One of my external hard drives cannot be read (its formatted for Mac, cannot remember if journaled or not), it shows an error in disk utility. Do you think Data Rescue will help salvage those files before i have to format it again? Thanks.

Does anybody know how the licensing works on these bundles? Can I split the applications up across my various Macs? Also, am I able to remove one of the apps from the Mac that it was originally installed on and then move it over to one of my other Macs, or is it locked to the original Mac that it was installed on?

Norton down right sux. I haven't used since Ver9 though so I don't know how 10 or 11 were/are, but I can tell you that prior to Ver9 it used to take over your system as if it WERE a virus.

The definition updates were horrendous. When the update kicked in you were locked out of the system until it finished and if your network connection had any hiccups it would render your system bogged down until a Force Quit and you relogged in or restarted. And then don't even get me started on Norton's scanning files or compressed files..... oy.....

I haven't put any anti virus on my Macs for a while now and no problems (knock on wood). Besides in all my years of working in the graphics field and getting and sending files to a multitude of vendors/customers I have only seen TWO Mac viruses. Oh and those two viruses were back in 1999 and 2000. I have seen 4 PC viruses get caught though on my system though since 2001.

Back in 1997-2001 (pre OS X) I used to use Virex and loved it. Haven't tried it since OS 8-OS9 though.

I've never used any antivirus on my mac, but for PC Norton Internet Security 2009 is fantastic. The previous few versions were bloated crapware that took over massive amounts system resources, but I suspect that Norton totally rewrote its antivirus because the 2009 version runs smoothly and unobtrusively.

Thanks, good thing that I know that before downloading it. I'm sure there's also a ton more software out there to try out.

The $49 looks like a good deal. I need the WhatSize and Drive Genius software, so I'm probably going to get the whole package.

I have about 30GB left on my Mac out of the 111GB that I started with. I haven't found anything good yet (I have tried AppCleaner and AppZapper and I don't particularly like either of them), so I guess I can try WhatSize. I wonder what it is like compared to those I mentioned.

That's the best value bundle in a while, IMO.

The thing I worry about when buying these bundles is whether they supplement their income by giving your contact details to mass-marketing companies. Probably if you buy from an individual developer he won't do it, but if you buy through a 3rd party who knows.

It's a bit less exciting this time. No bonus apps to watch for.

Different folks will have their own opinions as to what are the little gems to be found here.
For me it's very simple: iVolume.

Music is a massive part of my life and until I happened across iVolume, itunes was driving me mad.
iTunes has audio 'normalisation' built in? Yeah, and the earbuds that come with all ipods are worth listening with!

iVolume is just fantastic, is more than worth the entry price alone, and works beautifully.

The truly frightening thing though is that here in England, when I'm out and about, virtually without exception, everybody I see with an iPod is using the earbuds that come with it! Don't even get me started on the reasons why....
In two words: Asleep. Sheep.
All those folks will likely be satisfied with the results they get from iTunes' way of equalising volume between songs.

For the rest of us, there is a solution. iVolume.

Try rebooting. Also, check if there is a red light coming from your speaker output / headphones port. If yes, stick a paper clip in there and wiggle until it goes away :D. Seriously. If not, there is something else weirder going on that I have no way of knowing (not to mention it would be a lot easier to diagnose a problem if you actually said WHAT application it was that caused this...)

I didn't see a red light at the headphone port. I also tried using head phones and pulled it out and reinserted it about 6 times with no luck (saw this on the Apple discussion board).

I installed: DefaultFolderX, KeyCue, whatsize, mac pilot, little snitch.

Will be hard to tell which is the culprit. I may have to do a restore... Or else revert back to last nights preferences using Time Machine... What do you suggest.

Alot of those programs sound really useful, any comment on ones that work good or dont work good ?

Well, personally, I'm not still too impressed with WhatSize. I've tried it a couple of times in the past when trying to help other people on these forums, and it was absolutely atrocious. Serious bugs and design flaws resulting in completely incorrect output.

I just tried it again, curious to see if they'd fixed their problems. Was looking good, nice impressive new interface, when in less than 2 minutes of use it crashed on me. Oops!

The output seems more correct this time around, and I see they did implement one major fix I'd suggested in this forum back in April (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=5344125#post5344125[/url). But for anyone who's not afraid of Terminal, everything it does is available for free with the built-in du command. $13 for a pretty interface? I'll pass! Others may find it useful.

As for the other apps, most seem like things I'd rather try to figure out on my own for fun. KeyCue looks handy, but it's clearly just looking somewhere in the application bundle for that info. Would be fun to research what it's looking for - probably not hard. MacPilot looks like somebody went to macosxhints.com (http://www.macosxhints.com/) and put a bunch of the hints into one app. And they charge 20 bucks for it? Sheesh.

In fact, daenney (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=6713499#post6713499) seems to have it right on most of them, from what I can tell. Especially iVolume... huh? Isn't this built into iTunes?

DriveGenius does seem to be the most promising, but I have no direct experience. It's made by Prosoft Engineering, who also makes Data Rescue II (http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php) which I can personally vouch for as an excellent product. Saved my butt when a drive started to go really bad.

Out of curiosity, I just tried the demo of DriveGenius. The gratuitous eye candy is a little over the top for a drive utility... I also find it hilarious that even a product like this with real, non-trivial features has to add stuff that already exists in standard system utilities (Info and Initialize). I'm not sure what they can possibly add to initialize/format to make it any better than what Disk Utility does?? But otherwise it looks pretty solid, and easily the best value of this package.

i have bought former bundles and unless they have changed the rules (which i really really don't think), you can split apps. delete it from one mac, install it in another. you could also sell the apps you don't need.

good lord, no wonder piracy is so popular. For the prices of the programs and looking at what they do, I would say they are all stupidly overpriced. But then I have never used any of them, but still...

I'm just saying....

And yes, to anyone who fires back, I know that they are on sale and it is a wonderful deal and all that happy stuff and it goes to help MR blablabla...
And no, moderators, I am not endorsing piracy, I am just talking about the motivations for doing so. Stop censoring me :D

I see this argument quite frequently and it's something I've never really understood.
Being too expensive shouldn't be a justification or reason for piracy: I think ferraris are overpriced but it doesn't mean I would feel justified in nicking one :D
If software is too expensive simply don't buy it

I sent an email to the developer about this but haven't received any response yet. Now I'm locked out of the program because my "demo" version's 3 hour trial has expired. I wish these bundles were smaller and had less programs. Some are nice, but not enough to spend the full price, and I like too many to buy full price.

Both www.mupromo.com and www.maczot.com usually sell just one program a day at a reduced price. Small enough bundle for you? ;)

Anybody having a problem receiving the keys/serial #'s for LittleSnitch and KeyCue? It says that I will receive them from the developer, but I haven't seen anything yet.

Edit: Okay, I figured it out. Anything on MU's page that says "Direct from Developer" means that they haven't yet gotten the serial # from the software developer. I refreshed my purchase receipt and the serial # for LittleSnitch showed up. I'm still waiting on KeyCue, but I would guess that it will show up shortly.

The truly frightening thing though is that here in England, when I'm out and about, virtually without exception, everybody I see with an iPod is using the earbuds that come with it! Don't even get me started on the reasons why....
In two words: Asleep. Sheep.

I use Apple's earbuds, and when they break (I tend to go to sleep listening to audiobooks) I buy new Apple ones. I think they sounds just fine. I'd never pay more than £20 for a pair of earbuds, and Apple's ones sound better than the various other big-name branded ones I tried at the same price point. Why bother getting others when they do the job fine? My ear isn't nearly sensitive enough, nor do I listen to anywhere near enough music to justify fancier ones. That doesn't make me a sheep. It also shows I'm not a music snob.

And yes, the iTunes equalisation does just fine for me. I expect I'll get no more use out of iVolume than I will the anti-virus app included.

Much better than iWeb, which while notable for its ease of use essentially commits the user to ONLY using an iWeb roadmap. That said, for the price, iWeb is still pretty decent.

Rapidweaver seems to strike a unique balance of being a WYSIWYG web editor but with the ability to directly code HTML (and limited CSS, which you get built in with RW's various templates). Haven't used Version 4 but it looks pretty promising. RW's biggest problem is that it can't compete with iWeb's price point (free or a cheap iLife bundle) .

I saw that earlier on too - but it says this now as well:

I bought the bundle primarily for the anti virus (better safe than sorry methinks - given Apple's recent announcement and the continuing growth in the usage of Macs, it's only a matter of time) - but there are a few other nice items in there too of definite use (Drive Genius, iVolume, Little Snitch mainly)

I assume you're one of the lucky people who can wear the Apple earbuds without them falling out of your ears the moment you move your head. If you're really lucky and your ears provide a reasonably tight fight for the Apple earbuds then you are probably getting decent sound too. I've tried the standard earbuds and when I press them against my ears with my hands they don't sound too bad.

Since I can't wear standard earbuds I opted for in-ear units over the much larger, heavier over-ear models. Comfort is a huge factor with in-ear models. I had been making do with $20 buds because they were super comfortable, but the muddy sound quality was driving crazy. I tried moving up to $60, but they hurt my ears so I gave them to my wife who thinks they're comfortable. I eventually settled on a $100 pair of Sennheiser buds, but they came with such soft rubber that I couldn't get a proper seal in my ear. I swapped them for the firmer rubber from my old $20 pair and finally got the bass response they're noted for.

I'm over 40 and my hearing isn't what it used to be, but I could never go back to cheap earbuds.

Does anyone know if these are full, upgradeable licenses?

I bought this as it seems like a no-brainer. Several things I was thinking about are in there and I will use 3/4 of them.

I believe the licenses are regular full license. To be safe on getting the latest versions, I downloaded all of them from the individual developers' sites and installed them using the supplied serial numbers and they all activated fine. As far as I can tell, its no different than if you bought it from the developers. I doubt any of them are sophisticated enough to have special license codes that have restrictions.

I never have any problem with them falling out unless I've done something obvious like tied my scarf around my neck over the cables. That probably would explain why I get better sound — they sit very tight and snug in my ears. I never thought about it like that!

Never say never.

A lot of people got burned on Speed Download when their license suddenly wasn't good enough for an upgrade.

I'm slightly annoyed that MU Promo haven't learned anything from [the MacHeist] fiasco. Unless they deliberately plan to pull a fast one on the buyers, I see no reason that they can't provide a line or two of text that clearly explains the licenses.

Edit:
The Speed Download hullabaloo happened during a MacHeist, not a MU Promo.

Download the trial (http://www.realmacsoftware.com/rapidweaver/) or view one of the videos on the website (http://www.realmacsoftware.com/rapidweaver/tour/index.php).

I'd say it's a hobby editor in the same category as Apple's iWeb. Depending on your needs or expectations that might or might not be a good thing. What do you want to use it for?

The themes can be edited, yes.

I've been reading MacRumors.com for years and finally registered to let people know that the version of VirusBarrier included with the bundle is not complete.

I bought it yesterday and went to run it today. As with any virus program, I wanted to make sure the virus definitions are up to date. Well, the program says the virus definitions rights have expired. So the version that came with the bundle wasn't up to date and there is now way to update the virus definitions. (won't be buying from them again.)

I know that virus software is kind of redundant for the mac, but hey I paid for the program as part of the bundle, it should at least be up to date with current virus definitions.

Also, Drive Genius 2 requires an extra $5 download fee from the software company to make a disk image so you can work on your main hard drive (which is exactly what I wanted to do when making the purchasing decision.)

Almost every option for the program will show a red exclamation mark over your main hard drive icon, so you need the disk image from Drive Genius for $5, this info wasn't given in any of the pre purchase screens that I saw.

If these companies are using the MacBundle as a way to get potential customers incomplete versions will not work. An honest company lets you know you are getting an incomplete version. Over the years I have been very loyal to the software companies that are honest about their products.

That looks like a great deal.

Some of this software I might not want. Why would I want the antivirus software? I thought that my Mac is secure enough as it is. That's the whole reason I bought a Mac, so I could forget the slow antivirus software that makes a Computer running Windows slow.

I thought this also, but I went ahead and bought this bundle
and ran the anti-virus and it found 5 virus's on my iMac

There is another program called Mac-Scan
that looks for spy wear and trojans this program found one trojan
and several spy wear programs on my iMac.

I would rather buy these programs and have them find nothing or maybe something
then wonder why I am have problems.

I would rather be safe then sorry.

Yeah, since there aren't any viruses on the Mac, for $69 it will put an icon in your toolbar and load nothing into memory.

Yeah, since there aren't any viruses on the Mac, for $69 it will put an icon in your toolbar and load nothing into memory.

Even if there isn't a big virus problem with Macs, this line of thinking is basically saying that either a) you only communicate with other Mac users, or b) you don't care about anyone else. Part of the point of virus software on a Mac is to scan your email for viruses that you might be receiving and sending to other computers which aren't Macs... and thus infect systems of your friends, family, business associates, etc. I would think that it would be pretty embarrassing professionally for you to send a virus to your client, and have it end up taking down their systems and causing big problems for them. Personally, I don't want to be the one that does that. And further, who wants to be the first one that gets hosed by the first big Mac virus. There will be one at some point.

One response to your position on this is simply to say, "Fine. Good that you are happy with things as you have them. Peace."
Perhaps I really should try and stop giving a damn about where other folks are in the grand scheme of things but it's like a nail, twisting into me!

So this is what I think. I know that the bundled earbuds are crap. Simply not worth ever listening to them. Throw them in the bin.
As for sheep; what I'm getting at is the innate tendency of most folks to 'follow the herd', to not question, their own behaviour as well as that of others. Rightly or wrongly I do happen to thus tag iPod owners wearing white earbuds!
I find it amazing that anybody would be even remotely content with the sound quality when they buy their shiny new iPod and can only put it down to the fact that they simply know no better.
The asleep part comes in here, but I'm not even gonna begin to get into that.

Suffice to say that even though you say that you are content with the quality of the white earbuds, you must at least be aware of the notion that better quality probably exists out there, such is the choice available when it comes to devices designed to sit on/in one's ears and deliver music?
After this point I do begin to wonder what happens.
Anyway, I didn't mention alternatives or for that matter, prices. Yes, for listening at home I have a pair of Sennheiser headphones that cost in the region of sixty to seventy pounds tops on Amazon. When I am out & about I just wear the stock Sennheiser earbuds, the CX300 ear-canal headphones, that cost all of sixteen pounds on Amazon(a frankly disgraceful £40 at the Apple store and many other retail outlets). These are so much better than the bundled one's that it almost beggars belief.

I humbly suggest, that finances permitting, you promptly order yourself a pair and after using them for a short while('burn' 'em in a little), try going back to the white jobbies.
Incidentally, if you are listening to your music at that all-too-sheep-like bitrate of 128, then please, look into that also. If you, for example, listened to the same song encoded at 128 and then 320, on the the CX300's, you will I believe, hear the difference. If you genuinely believe that you cannot hear any difference, give it time, listen to other types of music, different sources(cd rip, download, vinyl rip) etc ....
Good as the CX300's are, the fact of the matter is that they are budget head(ear)phones. There are a good many better options out there at all different price points. I just made the decision that for the in-ear types, I wasn't prepared to spend that much more because of the problems I have had over the years with cables and also because when out walking or writing in the library or whatever, I just seem to be not that bothered by the sound quality not being really, really good.

Give it a go eh?!

I would think that it would be pretty embarrassing professionally for you to send a virus to your client, and have it end up taking down their systems and causing big problems for them.

If they're running Windows, they should be running anti-virus software if they're professionals.

And further, who wants to be the first one that gets hosed by the first big Mac virus. There will be one at some point.

Yeah, and who wants to be the first to be hit with a chemical weapons attack at some point in my home state? There will be one at some point. I better walk around with a gas mask on all the time. Or never leave my house. Thanks for that logic!

Yeah, since there aren't any viruses on the Mac, for $69 it will put an icon in your toolbar and load nothing into memory.

I installed Virus Barrier X5 had it check for and update the new virus definitions. Ran the program and to my surprise it found FIVE virus's
on my iMac.
They were marked with a number followed by .DMG
and the few I seen were other browser programs I down loaded

just wanted to let the few members that posted why bother
with the virus barrier down load, Macs don't get virus's

Thank You Virus Barrier

If they're running Windows, they should be running anti-virus software if they're professionals.

I have to wonder what you do for a living. If I send a virus to a client, it IS going to look unprofessional to that client, and it will damage my reputation as a professional. That is of importance to me, and I do care about my friends, family members, and business colleagues. Many of my friends and family aren't as computer literate as I am, and if their virus protection expired or something I'd feel pretty bad if I sent them a virus.

Yeah, and who wants to be the first to be hit with a chemical weapons attack at some point in my home state? There will be one at some point. I better walk around with a gas mask on all the time. Or never leave my house. Thanks for that logic!

Your response here is uncalled for... if you don't like my advice then just move on. Have you ever worked in a gas mask? I was in the military and I have. Running a basic antivirus email scanner is completely transparent and doesn't impede the use of my computer at all. Wearing a gas mask impedes your ability to do anything quite significantly, so your analogy doesn't even make sense. Further, sitting in a house is not going to protect you from a chemical attack unless you live in some kind of sealed capsule.

A better analogy would be leaving your house totally unlocked all the time in a wealthy neighborhood that doesn't have a crime problem. Personally, I am going to take some basic security measures like door locking. There WILL be a virus attacking a Mac at some point, its only a matter of time. The more marketshare that Macs gobble up, and the more that Apples marketing department keeps taunting the hackers by advertising that they are somehow impervious to attack, the more people that are getting interesting in getting some notoriety by being the the one that breaks in. It will happen. You want to ignore that fact, that's your business. Running a free antivirus program that is completely transparent seems like basic common sense. I run ClamXav which seems to work pretty well.

Macs don't get virus's

Macs DON'T get viruses. They can CARRY Windows viruses but since they are never executed by Mac OS they don't get viruses. I'd be willing to bet that VB saw a Windows virus in your .dmg files.

Abudephane, do get over your bad self.

If I bought expensive earbuds just because audiophile snobs like you snottily accused me of being an unwashed rube for not spending more on the right equipment that apparently all right thinking people should use, I would in fact be the sheep you seem to want to accuse everyone of being who doesn't care about exactly the same things you do. Not only am I supposed to buy earbuds, but I'm apparently supposed to spend the time, money, and energy to learn to care. Well I don't.

I'm might be a sheep for spending good money on an iPod, which everybody and their grandmother already have, but not buying another set of earbuds is simply making a choice based on my priorities; free works just fine for me. I listen to it on the train, hardly a conducive listening environment to appreciate the finer points of audio, simply to kill time, and as often as not I listen to spoken podcasts, so audio quality is hardly a concern. I did spend $100 to upgrade my speakers at home (and that was a bit of a luxury), but not $300 or more. Yes, I listened at the store, and no I couldn't tell the difference, certainly not enough to care. They are fine for the casual background listening I do.

So you like music and care about audio quality and can appreciate the subtle differences. Well, bully for you. I'm glad you found something you enjoy in life. Frankly I think people who spend multiple thousands on sound systems kind of crazy, but it's their money, and they're free to spend it on what the want to. I don't get, but I don't have to. I have things in my life that no doubt would bore you to tears if I blathered on about them, and would annoy you to no end if I lorded them over you as things you and everyone else in the universe needs to care about as much as I do.

Audiophile snob? Is this the retort one has to put up with for simply trying to make the case that one really shouldn't be content to just lay down and be shafted by Apple? Jesus.
As for 'wanting to spend the time, money and energy to learn to care', yeah it's quite evident that you don't want to, more's the pity.

Hi all, i haven't had time yet to read all the pages in this thread so pardon me if this has been asked before.

I bought 3 bundle's and was expecting that i would only have to pay for 2, but by the time i had orderd and i read it again, i thought ok may they mean i will get a 4th bundle for free ;-).

My question is, does anybody know how this works, i'm being charged for 3 bundles on my card but i only have recieved serials for 3 bundles and not 4.

I tried emailing the people from macupdate 2 days ago but stillhave no reply from them, so i'm sort of stuck now.

What can i do to get any more info?? Thanks in advance for that ;-).

Then an other thing , i tried the iVolume3 sound app, and my macpro went completly bezerk within 3 minutes.

I restarted the mac and then tried again, and i saw what the problem seemd to be, it was eating my memory in a big way.I have 8 gig's installed and from the moment i start iVolume3 i can see the free ram ( in menu meters) go down from 7,2 gig free to 800mb free within 3 minutes.

Once i stopped iVolume3 the eating of the ram stopped but did not get free i had to restart again for the problem to get fixed.

The strange thing was that when my machine hang the first time, the whole screen was frozen ( probably because of the ram thing ), i tried if i maybe could connect with my macbook to the macpro with screen sharing to see what happend, and gues what, i could close down all the programs and restart my mac pro without having to push the power button for a hard restart.

I was very surprised that this worked, it seems that it was not the total machine that hung , but just the part that connects y keyboard and mouse to the interface or something like that, since i could use the Mac pro just fine when i was logged in to it with screen sharing.

I of course wrote to the developer about this problem too and just like with macupdate , i have no response wath so ever.

It could be of course they are getting 1000's of mail at the same time and that that is the reason why i haven't got any reply yet , but i wonder if the people that put this bundle together bother to try out the apps they put in it, because , well you see my problem ;-).

Drive genius worked perfect i did not expect that much of an increase in system speed after defraging my drive, it was a joy and a beautifull made interface too.

I haven't had time to try any of the other apps yet.

But i have had some experience with virus barier in the past but that was no joy at all, and i had to litteraly erase my HDD to get it completley unstalled so i think ill stay away from that one for now.
I hope read some experience with the app in this thread , may things have become better by now, it's possible ;-).

Greetings , Data.

I just run the installer for the app on my machine, and downloaded the DMG file wich you can burn to a dvd with diskutility for the bootable dvd.

Nothing special realy.Drive genius only works of course if the disk with the OS you want it to work on is not the disk you started up from, that's why you should burn the DMG to a dvd so you can start up from that and then reapaire/defrag your boot drive.

I got my bundle this morning
I downloaded Drive Genius first
and made the bootable dvd as instructed

But right now I cannot install any of the programs
because of a password issue. Long story short
I took my iMac into a Apple store for a OS reinstall
and a back up from time machine.
I told them what pass word to use but it does not work
and now I cannot install any updates or the programs
I bought this morning.

Is there any way simple way to fix this, or do I need to do the
OS reinstall again.

THanks

Andrew

You can change your password by booting from the Install DVD that came with your computer. The option is under the Utilities menu.

I just bought the bundle. The main reason why I bought it was for MacGourmet Deluxe (for my wife). We downloaded the demo a year ago and she loved it. I figured paying for that program by itself was $44.95 so the extra $5 will get me a lot more software to use.

Well here is my experience with the software so far. I defragged my main drive with drive genius and it made it through the process fine but then my computer would not boot. The hard drive couldn't be repaired by booting from the drive genius disk or the apple disk utility. Thank god for Time Machine/Time Capsule. It took over 24 hours for me to be up and running again but I formatted and installed the system software on a new drive and restored from Time Machine. It took a couple of days to get everything back to normal.

My second bad experience was about a week later. I started getting a -10810 error. I couldn't open the majority of my programs and eventually none of them would work. I did some research and found that some virus protection software has been known to cause the problem. I was able to disable the virus software and trash a couple of cache files and now everything works fine.

I was excited when I first purchased the software but I definitely wouldn't do it again. It ended up costing me several days of work. I hope others have a better experience.

I am just wondering because I thought everyone used standard lists. Why would Ireland be missing on a standard list that even includes individual French departements?

Warning - back up before you try anything fancy, as always. I tried to defrag my drive with Drive Genius, and my mac and drive became inoperable. Apparently I was the true genius that missed the "not compatible with RAID drives" - I use Apple's hardware RAID.

Drive Genius identified my drive as a RAID according to the icon, but went ahead and spent hours defragging it, supposedly completing successfully. The volume became completely corrupt, Drive Genius 1st told me on a verify that there were overlapping extent trees or something, but I was unable to duplicate that result. It later refused to even look. Booting got me in an endless reboot loop. I'm hoping Apple's RAID Card utility will bring life back to my RAID, it currently says "viable" on the verify and appears to be attempting to rebuild, otherwise Time Machine here I come!

I am sorely disappointed - the manual defrag section doesn't say its incompatible with RAID (as some of the other ones do, e.g. shred), and the program sure didn't try to stop me either. What a pain, hope I get it all back soon but its going to take a while. Of course, this was the main reason I bought the bundle....

I de-fragged with Drive Genius 2 and it wouldn't boot after it reported successful. Standard Leopard install with a 320GB hard drive. I purchased the bundle mainly because of this app and the first try it corrupted things which is quite disappointing. At least Norton under Windows always worked.

Time Machine saved me after 6 hours restoring and I won't be trying that again.

I have had pretty much the same experience has you. I had bought 3 of them thinking i would get a 4th set of serial numbers, Misha from macupdate said they would work with me to get the 4th set but i haven't heard back from them, but after reloading both my macbook pro and my mac pro, from defrag errors, the -10810 errors and little snitch completely broke screen sharing for me. So at this point i am pretty much done with the bundle.

also, don't defrag time machine drives. my data was still there but time machine would not complete the restore so i had to manually move it back over.

Keyque and default folders are cool apps that i probably would not have tried other wise.

I'm sorry to hear that other people have had the same issues I did but at least it lets me know that it is a problem with the apps and not user error. It's pretty sad that a program made to improve the performance of your hard drive can completely cripple it. I move a lot of large files around and thought it would be a good idea. It was either the virus software or snitch that started dragging my computers performance down until I got the -10810 errors. I have both of them turned off now.

I guess the lesson is if it's not broke then don't try to fix it.

Norton is one of the worst, really.

You are so wrong. Mac OS X controls 8.9% of the market. Windows controls 89.6%. Hackers get a lot more from 89.5% of internet users than 8.9%. Mac OS X doesn't have a built-in Anti-Virus or built in security or awesome structure or whatever. Stop thinking Mac OS X is G-d or is like 10 years ahead of Windows because if that were true, Windows wouldn't control almost 90% of the market.

I'm not saying Macs suck I'm just saying that they're not 10 years ahead of Windows or 5 years ahead, they don't have a structure that protects the Mac from viruses, and also, Windows doesn't suck.

Same thing for Internet Explorer: it controls 70% of the market, and not 89.6% because of Firefox, not Safari. Safari controls only 7% so you can't say Internet Explorer sucks as a fact. You can state your opinion but you can't say that your opinion about Internet Explorer is a fact.

As far as I'm concerned, if you are buying it for little snitch, beware

Haha! This one time my friend told me to download this cool visualization for iTunes, which I downloaded and got an .exe file. But I also got this one other little file whose name was all gibberish. Naturally, I clicked to get info on it, but the funny thing is it highlighted itself on and off a couple times and then just deleted itself or something.

It must've been a Windows virus that got confused, went and cried in the corner, and then it decided it should just kill itself. :D

Whoops, it sounds like drive genius is causing issues.I haven't tried defragging yet (I'll back everything up first), but I did run the "slimming" on all my Adobe CS3 apps (eliminating supposedly only the PPC code). Big, big mistake. Not only did it render all of them unusable, but even after I uninstalled and re-installed the whole CS3 suite, and ran all the updates, I'm getting some weird registration errors and files which are not mapped to the apps anymore -- for example, After Effects .aep files no longer know to associate with After Effects 8.02 (exactly the same version as I had before re-installing), and I can't change the association in Finder either. There's no error, it just doesn't do anything. So maybe they should call it Drive Hacker or something, I'm not impressed so far. If you put out a hard drive utility, data integrity should be your #1 concern and I'm not so sure this product is focused enough on that.

EDIT: In this case it is possible that Drive Genius isn't strictly at fault, I probably just shouldn't have messed around with the slimming thing. Still, it sounds like a number of people are having issues with it, including complete, fatal data loss.

As I said, anyone can have their opinion but opinion must be based on something. McDonald's can't be the worst if they're the most popular but they can be your less favorite fast food restaurant.
I could say I prefer Burger King over McDonald's but I can't say McDonald's is the worst.
Same thing for PCs, you can dislike PCs but you can't say PCs are the worst if they control 89.6% of the market, because if they did suck they would control a lot less.

actually you are wrong...

99.999% of virii/malware are executable files. (.exe)

guess what unix/osx will not run?

and someone who pointed out that you need to type a password to run any programs just hammers it home. you would have to allow an infected .dmg file to run on your mac...

Same thing for the UAC in Vista: you need administrator privileges to run it.

That makes no sense at all. If 89.6% of customers buy a piece of crap, then by definition it is not a piece of crap?

90% of people used to smoke...wasn't particularly a good thing, right?

Come to think of it - Microsoft are actually a bit like the tobacco industry....
