Adobe and AVCHD

I did search and didn't find much in the way of people talking about actual experiences with using Adobe Premiere to edit AVCHD footage. I downloaded the trial version, but it does not support AVCHD imports due to licensing issues.

So, does anyone have practical experience editing AVCHD footage in Premiere? I have a quad core Mac Pro and would love to save the disk space by editing in the native AVCHD. Currently, I use FCE and it works well, but the source files get very large.
