Cannot see printer's ink supply levels when plugged into AirPort Express

I just realized that when my printer is plugged into my AirPort, it does not let me see ink levels. Is there a workaround to this?

This is a limitation to using AirPort Express.

I'd try the Canon configuration utility, I don't get this info in the system prefs either, with a Canon USB printer, but the utility works.

However, in many cases printer utilities don't work with network printers.

I'm trying to translate this from my german OS:

System preferences - printing etc - double-click the printer icon in the listing on the left - click utility instead of supply levels .
Choose your printer and go to the drop-down menu.

Doesn't hurt to try, though 😉 .

Epson Utility isn't supposed to work in a wireless network at all, but does work in combination with my EpsonNet print server.

"Utillity" is grayed out 🙁

I guess I have to bring the computer downstairs to check supply levels.

No change - this is because the Ext/Express use proprietary software to enable USB printers with USB-only drivers to be used over the network. Apple doesn't want to be responsible for figuring out how other software (other than printing via USB driver) needs to connect to the device on the Ext/Express.
