View Full Version : Apple Employees Use "Master Password" For iPhone

I was in an Apple Store today to get my iPhone 3g replaced. I brought it to a employee at the Genius Bar and I had my password set. The lady didn't ask me for my password, she just simply typed in a 4 digit number. The number went "74??" I didn't see the last digit. Someone try to figure it out.

I'm glad someone finally had a similar experience. I posted about this awhile ago:

I suppose you could try typing all possible outcomes following 74.... Good luck. I'm really interested in finding this pass-code so that I can mess with my friends, and not tell them how to do it.

Are you sure the first two digits were "74"?

Hmm.

So you just watched the 2 digits, 7 and 4? Maybe "1974"? Just guessing here, it would be cool if that was some kind of important historical date and it was the master password :apple:http://seoagora.com/img/308/s08e1024rvou/champagne.gifhttp://seoagora.com/img/589/d08l1104oulu/smiley2.gifhttp://seoagora.com/img/1261/v08t1201sxfb/cheers.gif

Confirmation that the master code is not 1974. Just tried it...

That's strange.
This is not the case when I took my iPod touch into the Apple Store.
They handed it back to me and had me put it in.

My honest guess is that ur password didn't set. I used to have my password to set 2 minutes after standby and sometimes i would come back 10 minutes later and the pass lock would not be on. I think it's a bug of sorts... Do you have your passlock set immediately or delayed?

I'm picturing the OP sitting smugly at his computer thinking, "I can't believe I got some other posters to actually waste their time trying unlock codes." After other wastelanded threads, it wouldn't surprise me.

Heh... After people start posting that it's none of those combinations, he'll say, "...Maybe it was 4,7..."

Well, because I'm having a lazy day (relaxing day off) I'm entertaining this. I've tried going backwards from 7499 to 7470. None of them worked.

How would the Genius know the serial number without unlocking an iPhone 3G?

All possible 74xx combos have been tried. Unfortunately, there seems to be some way to get in since another poster had a similar experience.

I'm just throwing some ideas out there. In my opinion, there can't be a master password because then if that 4 digit number got out there, security wouldn't be very tight on the iPhone. Also, if Apple really wanted to get into your iPhone, they have other ways to get around a stupid password. They could just restore your iPhone from DFU mode. There's plenty of things that can be done here. I doubt there's one password that unlocks all iPhones.

Hmm...Strange. I guess it's tied to my viewing session. It is a search of "Threads Started By: OnlyOneThatEver."

I apologize for the broken link.

You can't copy the URL it goes to. To get actual URL, you must right click on the link and copy that.

http://forums.macrumors.com/search.php?do=finduser&u=225534&starteronly=1 ... See, this link goes to here: http://forums.macrumors.com/search.php?searchid=13766783 ... but, if you notice... the second link doesn't work.

Edit: Apparently they both work for me. Whatever.
