View Full Version : Mac OS X 10.5.6 Release Imminent... Friday?

http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/12/11/mac-os-x-10-5-6-release-imminent-friday/)
Apple has seeded yet another build of Mac OS X 10.5.6 (9G55) to developers. This latest seed reveals (http://www.hmbt.org/blog/2008/12/10/adc-beta-mac-os-x-1056-build-9g55-seed-note/) no known issues and has addressed a few outstanding issues.
Beyond this, we have heard that Apple has started distributing this particular seed internally outside of the usual developer circles. This would indicate that this is the final version of Mac OS X 10.5.6 before public release. We had also heard unconfirmed whispers that the new version would be made available to the public on Friday, and this new information certainly makes that plausible.
Mac OS X 10.5.6 should be a free update available to all Mac OS X 10.5 customers upon its release.

Unless Steve has had an aneurism, it'll be free. This is good news, but 10.5.5 is stable like nobody's business.

- Fixed issue with DVI and display detection
This (fingers crossed).
The reason I reverted to 10.5.4 - because 10.5.5 screwed up quite a few MacBook owner's external displays - as in they didn't work at all anymore.
Who'd have thought a attaching an ACD to my MacBook when it runs 10.5.5 gives nothing but a black screen. 10.5-10.5.4 are fine though, as is XP and Vista, so it was not a hardware issue as I feared.
Looks like they got a lot of things fixed :)

Nah, I don't see Snow Leopard until March/April - I think we'll go to 10.5.9 at least. 10.5.6 seems like a lot of fixes so 10.5.7 onwards may be smaller and more frequent.

Hopefully, they will actually fix the damn Mail.app problems that have existed since developer seeds of Leopard. Its pretty ridiculous how unrealiable todo items are, everytime I add something I get a damn conflict. Its so annoying and Apple has done nothing but ignore it. There is also the issue of when it just stops getting new mail. I will go for an entire day not realizing it hasn't accepted any new mail in 12 hours. That is, until someone yells at me for not checking my mail.
10.5.5 has also decreased my FPS with WoW on my Mac Pro by a crap ton. Previously, I was getting over 80fps in shatt with 2 copies of WoW running. Now, if I am lucky I get 25fps.
10.5.5 also appears to have some memory leaks. After a few days my wired memory keeps creeping up and its never released. Even if I kill all applications and relog. This happens on both my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro.
10.5.5 has major problems with filevault. The performance is down right terrible.

The performance dropped before I upgraded. After upgrade there was no difference in speed.
The new graphics stuff came in the 3.0.2 patch, prior to WoTLK.
The NVidia performance is particularly bad.. there are people with dual 8800GTXs getting 25fps. It's more a blizzard problem than an apple one right now (alhough the OSX version is *way* slower than Windows that's probably a blizzard problem too).

I noticed a huge drop in FPS when OS X 10.5.5 was updated, _not_ WoW 3.0.2 patch. I am also using a 3870 not the 8800.

Sometimes when I have done a hide others command-option-H from the keyboard I have experienced strange glitches in the window behaviour which need a logout to fix.

lol Black and White OS
I remember waiting for 7.0 ( and 6 and 5). 7.0 did have color in the OS. So did 6.0, although not as nicely. The OS 6 Multifinder was very exciting at the time, but you really needed 4mb of RAM to use it properly. Along with my BIg 60mb hard drive...

10.5.5 has been very stable for me.
Stable? Yes. But there are definitely a few bugs and several annoyances that have not been addressed.
One bug, for example. If you are in List View, then drill to a folder that is Icon View, then use the back button, you will remain in Icon View. This is inconsistent and does not have this issue when using key shortcuts.
There are huge annoyances in Spotlight that need to be addressed. One of my favorites is having it open its search in the main hard drive instead of the current folder I am in.

I noticed a huge drop in FPS when OS X 10.5.5 was updated, _not_ WoW 3.0.2 patch. I am also using a 3870 not the 8800.
uh, great...
8800gtx sli would be much faster than a 3870, that's why he mentioned even *those* cards were having trouble with the update; he never said you were using one... seemed kinda snappy what you just said, we were trying to help you...
he's right about 3.0.2 though; and you're the first/only person i've heard having this sort of problem?
i get 80-100fps everywhere on my 9600m-gt in my new mbp and on my desktop with it's 8800gt i get 70-80 fps at 1920x1200 with 4x sampling, i've disabled the shadows or kept them low though.

10.5.5 also appears to have some memory leaks. After a few days my wired memory keeps creeping up and its never released. Even if I kill all applications and relog. This happens on both my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro.

Blu-ray is an entirely different laser technology. You'd need a whole new drive.
There are a few vendors, however, that will install a blu-ray drive in your mac. They don't come cheap though.

It can support it. Apple is just being evil about the software. Some people have had MBP running under Linux supporting 10 finger support! (I wish I was joking.)
Maybe we'll get lucky. I doubt it. Someone will put out a hack. At least that is the hope.

Memories, indeed. I remember my dad bringing home a Commodore 64 & writing "Choose Your Own Adventure"-style stories using go-to loops and "backing it up" to a Radio Shack tape drive that used regular audio tape cassettes. (I was the one writing the adventures... not my pappy... well, at least as far as I know...)
Then came the Apples, but the first one I ever owned myself was a Tangerine 266 MHz iMac. Meanwhile, I'm still occasionally floored by the fact that I can carry a week's worth of my favorite music in my pocket and listen to it anywhere and wherever I want.
As for 10.5.6? I think I'm going to wait. AFAIK everything works fine right now, and I likes it that way.

Pah! System 7 had full color, and Prince of Persia on the Games Demos disc looked awesome. :p
7.1 > 7.5.5 :apple:
I never had a problem with 7.5.5 and found it to be much more stable than 7.5.3 and some earlier builds. My Quadra 605 in 1993 shipped with a version of System 7.1 with its own System Enabler.
What I found embarrassing was stability in later versions of Mac OS 8.5, 8.6 and 9.x. 8.1 was pretty darn stable and hosted an AppleShare network on an old Beige G3 Server until 2006 where I'm employed.
Actually, 1/3 of the G3 tower was submerged in water for about 8 hours as some idiot decided to move furniture and left the server on the floor. After we let the components dry, it fired right up like nothing ever happened. Amazing....simply amazing.
The Gateway tower on the floor across the room didn't make it that night. :-)

I believe I've seen that 10.5.6 should have the trackpad preference pane found on the custom builds of 10.5.5 found on the GlassBooks. And because of that, it would seem that it would be possible to get the hack working without having to reinstall the OS like the previous thread from a few weeks about it here on MR. 10.5.5 has been pretty good; even 10.5.4. I am noticing some small things with 10.5.5 though. Somethings seems to have changed with 10.5.5 cursor placement when highlighting text. Does anyone know what the difference is between fixing and resolving an issue?
Resolving means having and providing a solution to a problem while fixing refers to the act that is necessary in order to obtain the solution. A devoloper is told that there is an issue. He would do some coding or whatever in order to fix it. When he's done fixing it, the issue is resolved.
Thus, in the end, fixed and resolved mean exactly the same.

If you really think that the content of the declared fixed list is the complete list then ...
A company releasing bug fixes only declares the fixes for defects that a customer has spotted, if no one has identified an issue then it is likely to be fixed without a fanfare.
I work for a software company (NOT Apple) so don't ever expect a full list of changes.

Thus, in the end, fixed and resolved mean exactly the same.
Not always. Depends on the company's philosophy. I worked in many I/T departments where fix means, "we just put something in place" (work around, disabled features, zap rtn to convert ongoing bad data to proper format [rather than fixing the cause of the bad data to begin with], etc) until we can get it resolved.
Fix could mean temporary solution (although not always the best solution - just enough to slow down or stop the issue from occuring / being reported). therefore it is still in open issue.
Resolved could mean they got to the core of the issue, and provided a permanate solution so that it never occurs again. Therefore the issue is closed.
The end user thinks fixed and resolved are the same, but to a programmer / engineer; fixed means off my plate for now while I work on something else, or work on getting it resolved.
Like a resturant, what goes on in the kitchen; sometimes you do not want to know.
I once worked for a major Medical laboratory testing company. their whole philosophy was providing fixes and work arounds, they never resolved anything - drove me nuts. talk about your spaghetti code to support:
Input from user -> routine to correct the data to the correct format -> routine to correct a problem that the last routine caused -> filer -> post-filer to convert the data to the outdated filing structure -> pre-display to convert data to new display structure -> routine to fix problem in pre-display -> routine to format data into obsolete fields -> Display to user.
Don't panic

Nah, I don't see Snow Leopard until March/April - I think we'll go to 10.5.9 at least. 10.5.6 seems like a lot of fixes so 10.5.7 onwards may be smaller and more frequent.
I think it is pretty likely that something related to Snow Leopard will be announced at MWSF. Hopefully a release... and I think 10.5.9 will be released the following week after MWSF.

Unless Steve has had an aneurism, it'll be free. This is good news, but 10.5.5 is stable like nobody's business.

Possibly when it ejects for seemingly no reason. For example, a video chat in iChat failed last night (like that never happens...). I send the report to apple, the computer hangs for a couple of seconds with a beachball, and the superdrive makes the eject sound. So I'm guessing it's something along those lines.

Your iChats fail to connect, you must be doing something wrong then. Yea i'm just kiddin, mine hardly ever work either. We just do them to possibly be surprised if it does connect.
But actually I checked my firewall and had the ichat connection blocked. Allowed incoming connections and he opened his firewall and it connected no problem. Granted this only one person i've tried it with and we both have macbooks.

The CD always makes that Eject sound when a crash report is sent to Apple because the crash reporter polls the hardware to report what it is to Apple, and this has the effect of waking unused hardware (e.g. the CD drive) from sleep mode, which makes it do the eject sound.

I'm old enough to remember System 7.5.5, probably one the worst OS headaches there ever was.
I've long said that system 7 was the best gift Apple ever gave to Microsoft.
It was very hard to remain a Mac user back then. I stayed on the platform only because my job at the time made it easier for me not to switch, but I was also exposed to Windows at work as well as by friends running it. Apple was very definitely losing the game. Windows was a far better platform than the Mac back then.
The worst part of system 7 was the extensions and startup problems. All the hours I dumped into troubleshooting that crap! Ugh! That's one of the many reasons I love OS X. What's funny is I just spent time at work troubleshooting a startup problem in XP and I ended up having to disable services and startup items and turned them back on half at a time, using the same troubleshooting strategies I learned with system 7 extensions. Funny how things change. :D

Hmmm, in the course of my work, a resolved issue would mean that that a workaround has been identified and put in place. The issue remains unfixed, but is now a "known issue" and can be "resolved" by using the workaround.
A fixed issue is such. It is fixed and will never occur again.
However, that is only the terminology that we use.

The report collects information about your drives. Same thing that happens when you start Disk Utility. Nothing unusual.

Why someone vote this "negative"?? I don't get it. Software updates are always welcome.
Some people mistakenly believe that more updates equate to a poor quality product.

Not so; resolving an issue merely means that it is closed. An issue may be resolved by simply saying that it will not be fixed, or that it will be fixed in the next hardware revision, etc.

The key thing I need is the dropped Airport connections and slow speeds on the new MacBooks. It sucks.
There also seems to be a bunch of MBP 2008 bugs. I hope they all get stomped out.
Leopard is almost shaping up to be a stable OS. Given the bugs and pretty bad experience I have had, I may not jump on Snow Leopard that fast this time around.
I am normally a very early adopter of Apple technology, but given all of the quality issues with the hardware and software in the past 2 years, I think I am going to slow down my purchases.
I like the fact that Apple ultimately fixes most issues, but the "beta culture" that has seeped into Apple is a real turn-off.

Woah! Sounds like I was glad not to be an apple user back then. Was that time right around 1995-ish? I remember a friend of mine was given an Apple IIc. He said well, this is Windows 93, what will become your Windows 95. Even following the documentation, nothing would work right. I finally gave up and said, well I know DOS and Windows 3.11, but that - yep that's got issues.
He's not joking. 10.5.5 is very stable. Have you been toying with your system files by any chance?
10.5.5 very stable for me. In fact that and the latest updates to Mac-office 2008 (only bought it because I got it for $79 instead of $429), I have not had any problems at all. Now just to get in some Christmas money (hopefully), so that I can upgrade my ram to 4gb.
And yes, I do not tweak my system. I tried one tweak to itunes (to setup custom genre artwork), and when the next itunes update overwrote that - I said, ok what a waste of time.

Resolve / Fix - much debate. Like I said it is the philosophy of the company on how that is used. Also the company may say resolved, but the end user is like "no it is not, the problem is still occuring - fix it".
Either way; it means "off my plate, next...." Regardless if the problem still occurs or not.
I have seen some posts on support sites that says:
"resolved - this is a known issue, no ETA given".
"resolved - corrected in version xxx"
"resolved - feature not supported"
"fixed - resolved by implementing in future release"
I hate that people are stickler for terminology, yet no one really uses it correctly.
Just like Routine/Program - interchangeable, yet companies may be sticklers that routine is a menu option and program is the code base. Other companies, Program is the software package and routine is the specific code.
Many times I told people (even my manager) to stop getting tripped up over terminology [he was even tripping himself up infront of users/clients].
Guess I been in this business too long......

I use Mail and Entourage (just depends on what I feel like launching). I do not see what you would call Phantom mailboxes. what I see are all the folders that are normally there under my ME and GMAIL accounts. I do not have errors either.
And yes (especially gmail), there are alot more than what would appear considering a normal exchange server - but those are specific to gmail.

It does have many bugs though. Look at the list. I'm sure you are having some of these problems too.
As I said before, there are one or two things on that list that *probably* affect me. I submit bug reports whenever I come across reproducible ones in OS X, but none of my currently open tickets are show stoppers.
For Me .5 is not stable at all. I have seen that beach ball coming up randomly.
So today is friday where is .6
I'm not attacking you at all, but one thing I think we would do well to avoid is statements like this. I think problems should be narrowed down and specific as often as possible. That random beach ball could be a lot of things on your system -- it might not be a problem with OS X at all. You probably know more about the problem, but based on the info there, there's no real reason to believe 10.5.6 would fix that problem. Plus, it would be untestable unless you could point to something really tangible that changed.
The key thing I need is the dropped Airport connections and slow speeds on the new MacBooks. It sucks.

I like the fact that Apple ultimately fixes most issues, but the "beta culture" that has seeped into Apple is a real turn-off.
The only real bug I noticed in my Unibody MBP currently is that funny screenshot bug. Wireless, ExpressCard, USB, FW, BT, even trackpad, kb, etc. etc. etc. -- all working great. Actually, since the latest firmware update I've had 1 BT connection problem, but a bit of fiddling with on/off and it's all fine now. Nothing in the system.log to show for it, so who knows?
Just to be clear, I do wholeheartedly agree that the last few years of Apple have not been close to perfect by any stretch of the imagination. I recall early OS X days to have been bad, too, though I had a great experience as a new user in 2000 on my Pismo running OS 9 for a short time. Except that damn bomb message. :)

You know, I have to disagree. With System 7, I remember dealing a lot with extension issues, but it was always relatively clear. System 7's Extensions control panel got better with time (allowing you to clearly choose which extensions loaded). I believe there was also a third party solution that made turning extensions on and off easier while notifying you of which were known to conflict.
Ever since then, on OS X or windows, I have never seen anything so simple. All sorts of programs make edits to system files, etc., and if those changes/extensions conflict, I, as a regular old end user, have no way to figure out how to fix them. Granted, the conflicts may be less serious/frequent now, but I still found the fixes clear.

Nope.
All our 10.5.5 PPC machines (some more than others) have an issue with "loginwindow" crashing on user log out. You are left with a blank screen but an active mouse. There's no way out but a forced shutdown. We are far from alone with this problem (numerous threads at the Apple Discussions).
Also, all our PPC machines are plagued with kernel panics on a regular basis. There's no rhyme or reason to the panics; they're all over the map. I wouldn't even know where to start with that.
Our PPC machines were solid as a rock under 10.4; 10.5 has been a foul experience, to say the least.

There won't be an 11.0 for many years most likely, OS X was intended to last Apple 10-15 years at least, and it's only been 7. In the old days, each new version of the operating system (which were not always the exact same kernel, though they were based around it) was a new integer update (System 6, System 7, Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9). In the Mac OS X world, we now have point upgrades and then smaller bug fix updates. So everything for the past 7 years has been OS X (10.x) and that trend could easily continue to OS X 10.15 if they so choose (not to be confused with 10.1.5).

Snow Leopard is 10.6, next update will be 10.5.6. OS 9 to OS X (10) was a major rewrite of the entire OS, throwing Unix in there, all sorts of changes. OS 11 probably won't be as drastic as 9 -> 10 was, but who knows. Maybe those 3D desktops? :D
10.6 is going to be a re-write/cleaning up/optimizing of core code to the OS + OpenCL and some other under-the-hood goodies. It's not considered a "major version" because it will retain all of the UI elements of Leopard 10.5, and Joe MacUser won't know the difference beyond speed (and second-degree burns from 2 GPUs and a dual core processor all crunching numbers at the same time inside his very cramped Macbook Pro).

"Apple released to developers another build of Leopard 10.5.6, build 9G55; in this build there are almost no differences from the previous build.
They say the main focus continues to be MobileMe (especially in automatic synching). As far as we know, only small bugs remain to be fixed, which makes us believe that 10.5.6 will soon be available to everyone via Software Update."

Works fine for me, I have Mail setup with 4 IMAP account and it works without issue
I have 1 POP and 2 IMAP and while I am not plagued by the issues mentioned, but rather with random processor spikes coming from Mail.app. It will load 1 CPU to 100%, then alternate to the other, back and forth. There does not sem to be any rhyme or reason to it, just bad coding or something. And no, I do not think it is mail indexing, because it will do it multiple times in a day, then not do it for weeks, then come back like every other day, so pretty random i'd say.
This is the biggest fix I am looking for, lets hope that this changes it (though it doesn't look like it will...)

Actually, it is being considered a major revision, because otherwise it would not have earned the 10.6 moniker. Granted, it won't be a significant visual change so far as we know, but the amount of work going on in this revision is more than enough to classify it as a major revision.

How new? I got my new Macbook a week ago and it already has the updates installed.
Run Software Update (from the Apple menu). It will tell you if you have updates to install. If there are updates, install them and then run Software Update again, and do that until there are no more updates to install.
You can also run About This Mac from the Apple menu, and click on "More Info". If these firmware updates are already installed you should see:
Boot ROM Version: MB51.0073.B06
SMC Version: 1.32f8

10.5.5 has been pretty good; even 10.5.4. I am noticing some small things with 10.5.5 though. Somethings seems to have changed with 10.5.5 cursor placement when highlighting text. The pointer also remains as if in a text field on some applications when carried off. Good to see a 10.5.6 update coming out!
The issue with the cursor not updating properly — for example cursor being text selection cursor when it should be an arrow or vice versa (there are other examples/combinations) — is a classical issue in Mac OS that is much less frequent in both Window and Linux. I'd really like to see some more of ”Apple's attention to detail” when it comes to this.

Not so; resolving an issue merely means that it is closed. An issue may be resolved by simply saying that it will not be fixed, or that it will be fixed in the next hardware revision, etc.
That's another way of seeing it (the bugzilla way, which takes a quite developer-centric perspective). I would never tell a customer a bug is resolved when I just decided I will never fix it.
Resolve / Fix - much debate. Like I said it is the philosophy of the company on how that is used.
Agreed. It depends on whether you see a problem from a developer's or a customer's point of view.

The problems didn't end until Apple moved to Mac OS X. Mac OS 9.1 (System 9) still used extensions as well. But I didn't thing it was a big problem. The ones that gave you the problems where freeware/shareware extensions.
Don't forget that System 7 made it easier to share files between the macs. A lot easier then how they did on the Windows machines at that time.

Anyone else notice the Macupdate often gets things earlier than VT?

There was one Saturday update, way back in the early OS X days. Every other one has been on a weekday. It makes more sense that if Apple is releasing a major software update (and an OS minor update qualifies as major), they would want their release team in the office in case they need to pull the update or do a quick respin. Expect Monday at the earliest.

lol isn't old technology great? The things that you would never expect to keep on chugging do, and in fact just won't freaking die when you are looking for an excuse to get something new and shiny-er.

Ah, forget Leopard; when will Snow Leopard be here finally.
Maybe its just me, but Leopard has been such a turd ever since 10.5.2 or so.
I loved Tiger, used it since it came out and till the day I upgraded to Leopard, never had a single problem with it - had to reinstall it only once, and even then it was purely my fault. With Leopard, the first few month were "ok" -- not perfect but not awful either.
But since maybe .5.2 its just been horrible. In the year or so that its been out I literally had to reinstall it 4-5 times now. It honestly is that bad. Reminds me of Windows in alot of ways. When you first install it it all works fine, but after you use it for a few month, one day for no reason at all it just collapses into a pile of crap.
Stupid bugs everywhere, apps crashing and can't be force quitted, freezing during shut downs, behavior similar to memory leaks at times etc etc etc.
Now, with that all I said I do love some things about it - Time Machine is great, quicklook is extremely handy, spotlight has improved tons (though I really miss the old spotlight "more results" search window), I rather like the new dock etc.
But yeah, I really really hope 10.6 will be more like 10.3/10.4 cause those two were just solid.

That's odd, on my Mac although Leopard is a bit buggy and Safari sucks big time, it's still generally fine... I have had my MacBook for about 5-6 months and I havent had to reinstall the system or anything... Now that I am browsing with Firefox, it's perfect really.

To be blunt, it sounds like the problem is with you more than with the operating system itself, that, or I'm really lucky that I haven't had problems with Leopard, Tiger, Windows (XP or Vista), or really Ubuntu for that matter.
At least nothing that wasn't my own fault (I like to mess around with system files. Sometimes they don't end well, but I can usually fix the error without having to reformat, and this applies to Mac OS X and Windows, as well as Ubuntu).
