iPod mini "locks up"?

I have, in my possession an iPod mini. A while ago, while browsing around, the thing locked up. The buttons would not respond, and it wasn't playing any music.

The "Hold" switch wasn't the problem, as it had been unlocked the whole time.

I had to let it run itself out of batteries and it's charging now. I hope it comes back to life.

The reason I'm not writing the event off as a fluke, is because the demo model at the Best Buy was also locked up. It confused the salesmen as well.

Is this a trend?

Dude, it happens. With any new product there are bound to be small issues with some. If it worries you, return it.

Holding the menu and play buttons simultaneously on the larger iPods restarts it. I'm not sure how this is done with the iPod mini. If I were you I would search Apple's support database and discussion forums.

if this is a large issue, apple should have a firmware update out in no time.( i hope) I think i will hold off on buying one untill a new firmware update is released.

yeah, well, that didn't work. It's like the buttons don't work at all.

first, toggle the hold switch on the top so it's on hold, then it's not. then instead of play and menu on the regular iPods, on the mini's it's menu and action (or the center button).

I had the same problem with my Mini Ipod, what you need to do is Reset it. Follow the instructions in your user manual and it will work perfectly afterward. I have not had the problem again afterward, it is not the batteries

In order to reset, you must
1) have the Mini plugged into a power source.
2) Switch Hold on and then off
3) Hold down the Select(Center) button and the Menu at the same time until you see an Apple Logo appear on the screen
4) Enjoy your Mini
If it does not work afterwards, take it back to Apple Store and get some help

I got my mini on Thrs. and it has locked up 2 times since.. reset both times but tonight it acted as if the battery was dead so I plugged in and after 2 hour of charge I unplug and it shows the battery icon and ! it will not come on without the power adapter, and reset does not fix it.

My wife's mini has locked up once also.

I think there is a problem with all minis.

btw - I've got 2 regular ipods (g2 & g3) so I am not a new user.

Anyway,

I got my ipod yesterday Feb, 21 from best buy. The workers couldn't wait to see how beautiful it was so they had opened it when it came in so i bought it later that day open box for 224! I was like i need this, can i get that open box? HAHA Take that Best Buy and quit hiring jerk staff!

Ohh and it hasn't locked up at all.

That's a great deal. I bought mine in-store with an education discount for $219. All they do is copy your license and ID. And you don't have to be a student, you can be employed by an educational institution. And even if you are not officially affiliated, you can find someone who is and grease them with a ten spot and still come out ahead. I don't condone this type of ethical waywardness but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

One of the minis in the store was locked up. I tried a reset but it wouldn't budge.

My girlfriend ran for 60 minutes straight today without a problem using the armband.

For potential buyers, this thing is the real deal.

I sent out a Mac Forums note the 1st day of MWSF (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54463&perpage=25&pagenumber=2) when I saw this happen at Apple's exhibit booth.

The Apple crew didn't notice for 3-5 minutes when several other attendees and couldn't figure out what why the darned thing would turn on. They spent some time trying to get it to work, then took it off the floor.

My guess: Apple's probably known about this glitch for a while

My little brother ordered an iPod Mini with my educational discount the day they were announced. He just got it yesterday, but said it wouldn't sync with his computer. We assumed it was a problem with the computer, but then we plugged it into another mac and it still wasn't showing up in iTunes. It wouldn't show up in the restore program either. Anyway, we called Apple and he sent it back for another one. I think these minis have a lot of problems.
Even my old 30GB full size has a few problems (it crashes every once in a while and sometimes randomly skips to the next song instead of playing the one I select). But nothing as bad as not connecting to a computer.

That's a shame about all these potential lock ups. Granted this is just a forum and when 5 people post their problems it sounds like everyone has them as well. One thing for sure is to call Apple and/or submit a feedback/support report. Hopefully this is just all software related where a firmware update will resolve this issue.

it works on the mini's too, its just a little more difficult.

I am on the phone with an Apple iPod Product Specialists as I type this... they say it's the first problem they've encountered with the mini, yeah right! they are having me send it back for repair.

they also tried doing a restore and that didn't work.

Well, I'm two for two, so far. I would certainly expect Apple to know about it, as it would seem very unlikely that I've handled the only two defective iPod minis.

My ipod mini crashes about once a day.

No need to hook it up to a power source.

Just switch hold on/off, hold menu and select for 6 seconds.

Im assuming the deffect is with all iPods, so I'll prob. just hold on to mine.

This is exactly what I want to hear. I'm pretty active and having an iPod that won't skip with 45 minutes to 1 hour of running/jumping/strenous cardio is good to hear.

Now, I can't wait to get a mini. I want to wait though for this lock-up thing to be resolved.

I couldn't get mine to sync at first either. However... I checked the documentation and it says you should hook the cable to your computer before you hook it to the dock (assuming you have one) before you place the mini in the dock. Afterwards, it was business as usual.
