Ipod Video problem

My old 5G video ipod is being really strange
when I plug i into a power outlet it starts up and says the battery is fully charged
when i unplug it, it shuts down and doesn't start back up unless i plug it into an outlet
when i try to plug it into my macbook nothing happens, it just stays shut down

IS there anything I can do to fix this?

Ive tried toggling the hold button and holding down the menu and select button

You could try restoring the software in iTunes. I don't know if this will help, but it's worth a shot if you want to keep your ipod. If you live near an Apple Store you could try asking someone there. I find the employees to be extremely helpful.
