I won't eat the real stuff though. It's mostly fat, and I'm not that into it.

bacon is amazing.

last year, we bought a cheap charcoal grill and grilled out on the stoop of our dorm, and i would make bacon cheese burgers by cooking the bacon on a piece of tin foil...they were soooooo good.

Bacon probably isn't going to show up in the food pyramid anytime soon, and it's not part of my (fairly heathy) diet, but I sure do love to smell it. If somebody else orders bacon in a restaurant and I pass it to them, I move the plate verrrrrry slowly past my nose!

And it's not the worst thing you could eat. A single Entenmann’s chocolate donut has the same saturated and trans fat as nine strips of bacon! So skip the donut, have eight strips of bacon, and boast how diet conscious you are!

A 5 or 6 years ago 2 friends and I went camping for a week in Brown County State Park (southern Indiana). Long story short in 5 days we ate, among other things, 3 or 4 pounds of bacon. I think it was a few years before I even thought about eating bacon again.

bacon is absolutely fabulously amazing that my friends and i had a party to celebrate it a few months back. we went to the local market and bought 8 different kinds of bacon (1 pound each) and then we cooked them one at a time and ranked them. i believe the apple cured peppered won. check out the fun!

I truly do love the stuff, had a bacon sandwich for lunch yesterday, back bacon isn't too fatty, especially if you cut the rind off, and grill rather than fry...

course, you have to open the whole Heinz tomato or HP sauce debate every time don't you?

(Its a very British debate)

There was this old woman who came into the deli I worked in as a teenager every day and had the same thing: a BLT with no lettuce and tomato with extra mayo and extra bacon . . . and several cups of coffee.

I kind of got the feeling she was just trying to get it all over with.

So that was 3 or 4 pounds each? I've seen a half dozen scouts go through that in one meal and ask for more. My brother eats almost a pound a day. My appetites are similar.

We were frying our own bacon at 6 or 7. Grease splatter burns were almost a badge of honor.

The last I checked, a granola bar has maybe 3-4 grams of fat. It's a lot less than bacon and they are better for you.

Maybe it's just me but whenever I eat really fried or really fatty foods, I get really bad stomach pains. So in a way, I enjoy not eating it because I remember going to school every day when I was younger lying on my desk wishing I were dead for the longest time until I finally discovered what was causing the pain. Caffeine does the same thing to me, as well.

the deli next door to an place i used to work would start frying bacon right around lunchtime. not because anyone had ordered it yet, but because they knew people would walk past, smell bacon, and that little lizard brain at the top of their spinal column would say "whoa... bacon. better get some." worked like a charm, every single day.

and speaking of... everyone here should ask their local independent bookseller to carry "snake 'n' bacon's cartoon cabaret." one of the funniest underground comic collections EVER. you may have seen some of the illustrator's work on SNL's TV Funhouse; he did Captain Marginal and the bit about Pablo Picasso. If you have a generally healthy diet, it's ok to indulge in some bad fat from time to time. The body doesn't mind as it can deal with small amounts... I'll have bacon once or twice a month if its available. Yes living in France does have its disadvantages, *no bacon*

Well, speaking of dietary quirks, usually because granola often has nuts mixed into it, and I'm allergic to the nuts. :)

Sometime, when feeling adventurous, try dates & bacon: Take a package of dates (the dried fruit kind, for you psychos out there :D ) and wrap each date in a slice of bacon. Secure each with a toothpick, then bake 'em in the oven on a foil-covered cookie sheet (I unfortunately forget what temp/how long--maybe 20 min. at 400 degrees?).

Intense, greasy, but really yummy. mmmmm grease.

awesome -- i've been a fan of bacon-wrapped dates for a long time now. i usually see them at tapas places, often stuffed with some sort of cheese. i try to get other people to try them, but most people think it's an odd combination of flavors. well, duh.... that's what makes it so good!

I rarely eat bacon but when it's cooked properly, it's so good. :) It may be 6 months or more between encounters, so that may not be too bad for me.

On the other hand, things cooked in lard tend to be more dangerous since it's more difficult to realise that they've used that.

One of my favourite things cooked in lard is this style of potato chips/crisps: http://www.utzsnacks.com/bgUTZProd_GranPotato.shtml They're also a heart attack waiting to happen, if you can't control yourself.

With the exception of a steak on Friday nights, I really don't eat meat either. I haven't had fast food in over 2 years. Bacon is friggin' nasty. Your face and back will break out if you sit in the same room while it is cooking. And about 3 hours after eating it, it is best to be within sprinting distance of a bathroom.

There is some vitamin that you only get from meat and multivitamins that the body can't produce. One of the B's. Without it you can get serious brain damage. Adults its not so bad since the body can store years worth. Make sure she at least gets eggs and milk.

Even plain Silk has a strong hint of vanilla. And sometimes Sun Soy has an undertone of watermelon, of all things.

I've never had a Morning star product but I may have to attempt the bacon sometime. My girlfriend has been quite vocal with the fact that she finds their products nasty so I've stayed away and been quite happy with about everything that Boca and Garden burger comes out with. One thing that my girlfriend wants more than anything right now is for Boca to come out with a hot dog product since she is in love with the new line of sausages they have now. If they do come out with some, I'll have to try making some pigs in a blanket with them since I remember that was the only way I'd eat a hot dog besides packing it so full of chili, peppers, bbq, onions, and cheese that I could feel my heart crying as I took a bite. The best thing even, even though it is simple, is to take those Pillsbury crescent rolls and roll a piece of velveeta cheese and a hot dog in them and bake them. Talk about the best damn pig in a blanket you could ever eat.

If you have a generally healthy diet, it's ok to indulge in some bad fat from time to time. The body doesn't mind as it can deal with small amounts... I'll have bacon once or twice a month if its available. Yes living in France does have its disadvantages, *no bacon*

I don't know if you'd want to eat an entire sausage made of bacon, but there's no reason you couldn't use lard or even bacon bits as flavoring if you made your own sausage. I've made pesto and pine nut sausages, and sausage with olives and sun-dried tomatoes, so it's certainly possible to stuff sausages with a filling containing bacon.

Hmmm, maybe a spinach and bacon and ground pork sausage with lots of red pepper flakes for heat sounds tasty come to think of it....

No God who created such delicious animals would forbid his chosen people from tasting them, unless he was a mean and spiteful god. So I remain athiest today and was thrilled to read this thread as I was eating a breakfast sandwich. Sadly, we are out of bacon and the ham had gone bad, so I was forced to eat a meatless breakfast sandwich. Oh the horror. Anyway, thanks for this thread and the interesting tales... Its a southern thing. You save the bacon grease for cooking other things. You have to be careful about frying with it since it has a low smoke point but there is nothing quite like hashbrowns fried in bacon grease...

Its also really good in beans. You can add a dollop of bacon grease to pinto beans as you are cooking them. Its also really great on green beans, better than butter.

It is mostly about avoiding eating animals that ate other animals. Pigs are omnivorous, most of the traife animals are omnivores or carnivores.

The seafood prohibitions also take care care of bottom dwellers (which can be rather nasty)

The meat and milk prohibition is based on 1 restriction repeated a few places (boiling the calf in its mother's milk) Which the canaanites did and then ate for symbolic reasons. Right next to that there is a prohibition of eggs and birds at the same meal.

There are some sanitary reasons for doing it. Trichinosis from pork, Hepatitis from shell fish. I think though that the Jews who observe, observe because they observe. They are God's chosen people and set aside. They have gone through a whole lot, where different cultures have tried to assimilate them and but by holding fast to traditions like this they have endured.

if anyone reads The Week, they had a little blurb about the best bacons. apparently some panel named slab bacon from Summerfield Farms (Virginia) the best, followed by apple-smoked from Nueske's Hillcrest Farm (WI), apple-smoked from Nodine's Smokehouse (CT), organic nitrite/nitrate-free from Niman Ranch (CA), and Kunzler (PA).

and if you don't read The Week, you should. it's a fantastic weekly news summary, both domestic and international. and they also run bits about bacon and stuff.

It is, in fact, referred to as "streaky bacon" in the UK. It is a different cut of meat. UK bacon is called "back bacon". A friend of mine from the UK at first thought the US bacon was horrible... all fatty, etc. Now he can't stop eating it!

Here is a poem about streaky and back bacon. Poem link (http://www.poetrymagazines.org.uk/magazine/record.asp?id=8719)

nothing to be sorry.they never looked appealing to me, and in hte past 15 years i haven't eaten meat.

i found imitation bacon bites at walgreen's. they are made of soy, and had no animal ingredients, so as curiosity i bought one pack of it (sounds gross, but wanted to try). i'll ask someone who knows (or remembers) how the real bacon tastes, and if the imitation is close enough to it. if not , i won't still try the "real thing". :)

I have to admit, the smell of bacon being cooked makes me ill. I don't eat meat either, and have found that the Morningstar or Lightlife or whatever other soy bacon products are equally unappealing to me.

That's pretty funny but I would have to say, at least for myself, that there is no bacon (except maybe imitation tofu bacon) worse than the carbonized, shriveled Fakin' Bacon they use on your average double-bacon cheeseburger. Not that I would know, of course. I'm far too health-conscious to ever eat something as loathsome as fast food. ;)

This may or may not help... you might want to look up Irritible Bowel Syndrome (IBS). I have the same problem. You might have problems with Whole grains and whole wheat as well. Basically any food that is difficult to break down. :( High fat, high fiber, caffeine, etc are all bad.

i could write for days about bacon but........no. i like it either really thin so it's crispy but not crunchy(paradox, sure, but wtf) or thick cut so it's crispy outside chewy inside. love it by itself slice after slice after slice until you can feel it slide down your throat...or on pizza. the white sauce kind o' course. you dont know until you've had it...oh yeah...
also good with avocadoes and frisee and not-too-much-mayo on thick bread preferably white. i cant stand iceberg but frisee's just so un-lettucy yet so lettucy it's the perfect sandwich green...bacon wrapped around sausage is okay but the bacon doesnt crisp right-maybe im using the wrong sausage? jimmy dean for me-not a sausage purist. take bacon and sugar it up before frying there's nothing quite like sweet bacon. i could go on forever but not at the time...im gonna go eat bacon on toast with scrambled eggs and grape jelly :p

I like my bacon crispy, but not dry... and I don't need all of that liquid fat clog afterward.
If you like the bacon flavor, but don't want as much fat, you can try what I do when I am making bacon for salad.

I fry the bacon until it is lightly done.

Then I put the bacon in a bowl of warm water and sort of wash it gently.

Then I dry it off, and fry it again

If it is real fatty, I repeat the washing process. Otherwise, I just cook until the desired level of crispness.

I don't want to leave you with the wrong idea.

Personally, I eat bacon straight (fried).

However, some of my friends prefer a less fatty version, which is why I went to that method. If you do it correctly, it still tastes pretty good. If you wash it too much, it tastes terrible. That is why I said sort of wash. Maybe the term slighly stir would be better. The key is to get the excess fat off of the bacon before you do your final fry.

Oscar Meyer's "Ready to Serve" bacon. I've found it to be the best thing since sliced bread. For those of us who are carnivorous.

Why? Well, first of all, it doesn't require refrigeration until you open it, so you can buy a few boxes and keep them wherever.

Second, it comes in 3-slice parts (layer of waxed paper, 3 slices of bacon, waxed paper, bacon, etc.). Nice serving sizes.

Third, it's pre-cooked. 20 seconds in the microwave yields three crispy bacon slices.

Fourth, no mess - no grease, no pan, etc.

I don't eat a lot of bacon (mostly because it's such a pain to make and clean up after), but this is truly nice. Easy to make some for a snack, for a nice BLT, for an egg sandwich (microwave the egg, too, and you've got the ingredients ready before your toasted muffin is ready), etc.

Just thought I'd share....

That is some serious food technology.

How long does an unopened pack/box stay good for?
Is it genetically modified or irradiated?

I honestly can say I've never seen anything like that on UK supermarket shelves... people wouldn't buy it.

Go get the ingredients, my friend! The taste and texture were excellent... first, the dry toast as you begin the bite. Then, the nearly simultaneous burst of juice from the ripe tomato and crunch as the toast and bacon yield. A brief taste of lettuce, some of mayo, then, as you chew, the combination of it all.

Then there's the next bite, and the next. So good. Soooo good.

I just had two, and I'm salivating at the thought.

Sadly, many are turned off of tomatoes by eating unripe ones. If they'd had fresh-off-the-vine tomatoes, still warmed by the sun (but washed, of course!), perhaps with a pinch of salt, when they were young, more people would like them, I think.

Tomatoes from the store in february are not tomatoes. They are blah-food. Tomatoes grown in my garden, vine ripened and plucked delicately from their quiet resting place amidst the flowers, are unbelievable. They have so much natural flavor that they can be eaten right on the spot (with a rinse, as noted before), or, better, sliced and put on a plate with a little basil, salt, olive oil, and fresh mozzarella cheese...but that is getting away from the point - which is that tomatoes are incredible in so many ways, unless you are looking at tomatoes sold in the winter that are imported from 500 miles away, and ripened under a flourescent light in a grow room (or not ripened at all for that matter  ) If you don't like tomatoes, make an effort never to eat hard, winter ones, and try, for once, a big, ripe, juicy tomato, right off the vine in mid-July. I expect many new tomato converts to send me checks for large sums of money when they discover the beauty of tomatoes. (jsw - I'll cut you in on the deal. :D)

BTW, I see we've successfully hijacked this thread by first gaining its trust and discussing our - truthful - love of bacon.

Now, it has been derailed into a discussion of tomatoes. And again, the love is honest.

I will, if possible, attempt to begin discussions of lettuce, mayo, and toast in this thread as well. I will then create a sandwich from it.

So, anyway, when I was a kid, I loved iceberg lettuce. Loved it. Put a little salt (not a lot) on a section of it and ate it plain. Not individual leaves, oh no. Carved out sections of it. Odd? Yes. But good. As good as a tomato fresh off the vine, eaten as the juice dribbles off your chin into the fertile earth below? No. As good as crispy bacon? No. But refreshing, and a break for the arteries after all the bacon. ;)

Me, I prefer a simple BLT, hold the L. Not that I'm a lettuce hater or anything - in fact, I enjoy a good salad. But I don't like it with my bacon and tomato sandwiches. I usually don't order it without the lettuce, since it is a simple matter to remove it.

Mayo....mmmm. I usually eat it on my burgers - ketchup, tomato, lettuce, and just a bit of mayo, and also it is really good on cold, (usually leftover) cooked broccoli. If you hold the stem of a little shoot of broccoli, and pass the head of it over the mayo to get a thin layer on the broccoli, it adds a lot of flavor (and fat too, but I guess you could say that that is redeemed by the broccoli factor ;))

broccoli? come on, man, no one puts that on a BLT sandwich.

I believe that OutThere761 was talking about mayo on broccoli, not broccoli on a BLT. Am I not correct.

And yes, I do admit that I love to eat bacon.

I know, I was just mentioning that he was off the agreed-upon hijack agenda. ;)

To get this back to the bacon, my roommate and I lived off this far too much in Toronto. This recipe is approximate, and should not be followed directly, as I've just had a bit too much crappy Chinese beer. Great in the winter. Anything combining tomatoes and bacon is fantastic. This is what I make for one person, with bit left over - so you can increase quantities as you see fit.

A bit of oil in a pan (not much needed)
Add 3ish strips of chopped bacon
let it cook for a while on med-low heat
add 1/2 a chopped onion
fry 'em up a bit
When onions are getting soft, open a can of tomatoes
Dump the tomatoes in, stab them a bunch of times to make it look like you chopped them carefully. Some people say you need to get rid of the seeds, but I never notice them.

Optional: Chop up a bunch (5? more?) of pickled pecorino peppers (many supermarkets have 'em next to the pickle section), stick them in, too. Add a nice punch if you can find them, but don't kill yourself looking for them.

Pepper to taste (you may want to add a bit of salt, too, but bacon's pretty salty). You'd think the extra oil would make it too oily, but you don't notice it in the end.

Put the whole thing on top of freshly boiled pasta.

Nummy.

You can also do it with fresh tomatoes instead of canned. And, if you want to turn it into a stew, leave out the peppers, put in a bunch of crap red wine and let it simmer down a bit, then add chopped up boiled potatoes and carrots and whatever you feel like adding. And - secret: adding a bit of sugar (a teaspoon or less) brings out the tomato flavour!

That sounds really good right now. An ex girlfriend (years ago) of Italian descent made a similar dish (although it probably used something Italian instead of bacon, since she was one of those purists who, when cooking, take pride in "authentic" dishes... whatever). Anyway, it was very tasty, this sounds similar, and I think I'll make it soon. Thanks!

What could be more pure than bacon? :D Mmmmm...
"Marge: I tried greasing the bucket with bacon fat but your father kept eating it.
Homer: Couldn't you try a non-delicious fat? Oh, there's no such thing!"

Hope you like it. I'm feeling a bit peckish right now, too. My latest thing has been cooking with booze, mostly because I have a bottle of awful Chinese red wine I'm trying to get rid of. Think I'm going to try some sort of beer-based beef stew tonight... I love winter food.......

Edit:
Homer: Are you saying you're never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Ham?
Lisa: No!
Homer: Pork chops?
Lisa: Dad, those all come from the same animal!
Homer Simpson: Heh heh heh ... oh ... yeah ... right, Lisa. A wonderful ... magical animal.

Glad you enjoyed it! Unfortunately, my plan for a beer stew was foiled due to a lack of necessary veggies at my local veggie stand, and I was too lazy to walk to the supermarket. Tomorrow!

I've discovered that almost any restaurant will be happy to stick a few slices onto any sandwich, provided you ask nicely. And any other disk, as well, except for dessert -- they think you're weird  then.

heh.. all this bacon talk reminded me of a posh restaurant up the road from where I live - it's called the Fat Duck (http://www.fatduck.co.uk/menu.html) and they do food classed as 'Fusion' (I think). One of these things is Bacon and Eggs IceCream .

Not been to try it, but one of these days :p
