Volume seems very low

i have looked everywhere for a general setting for volume and everything seems to be up. the max volume is selected but it seems that it is very low. is there any way to turn this up? maybe a hack of some sort?

I don't know, but try getting the soundflower addon, that might help

its a macbook. 2 yrs old. just got it off craigslist.

The speakers aren't loud to begin with on the macbook..what are you playing? Use an equalizer??

well on video chat and itunes it just seems lower than it should be. i havent messed with any settings.

Try resetting SMC.

I don't know about the MacBook, but my MacBook Pro could get up to a reasonable volume for music but not quite loud enough for a cinematic experience while watching movies. It's a silly question, but have you checked iTunes' own volume control?
