Gears of War 2, Devil May Cry 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 was the worst games I played this year.
I actually bought Left 4 Dead over the weekend and I think its a good time waster....single player is absolutely sh** though.
List your Worst games of the year....sounds like a good thread.

Valkyria?! GEARS?! Left 4 Dead?
*turns in disgust* MRU, you don't like fun. :D:p
Fable II for me. Peter Molyneux, biggest shame in the gaming industry.
Spore. Got bored before I got anywhere NEAR the space age (which still looks lame)
Thats about it really. I don't buy crappy games :p

I thought this when I read 2nyRiggz's post quoted above in it's original thread, and I'm thinking it even more now -
Why the hate for Gears 2? I thought it was really fun! Sure, it wasn't changed much from the original, but I always say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Spore is also my choice for worst game I played this year. I lost interest after the second stage.

Ditto. I only buy games that are loved by reviewers and my friends.

Pain - apart from an initial chuckle or three.
Super Smash Brothers Brawl - the fun wore out quickly.
Burnout Paradise - open world boredom, might as well have been a NFS title.
I wisely stayed far away from the RPG and FPS genres, so this list is shorter than it might otherwise have been.

Jumper on the Wii.
That's about it really, I purchase games carefully but it was BOGOF at Game and I figured I might as well give it a shot seeing as it was free...I certainly wouldn't pay for it.

*turns in disgust* MRU, you don't like fun. :D:p
This is a personal choice thing, and what rocks one person doesn't mean it will rock everyone right.
All those games just did absolutely nothing for me, and playing them just wasn't enjoyable for me.
I thought this when I read 2nyRiggz's post quoted above in it's original thread, and I'm thinking it even more now -

I didn't like Gears either though...... Again I fully accept that it's well produced and of good quality, just that it doesn't do it for me and hence the reason it made it into my worst games list.
Remember there's no right and wrong. It's your personal choice.

Honestly, I can only go by the demos, cause I only buy games that I know I'm gonna like. But judging by the demos, the worst were:
- Fatal Inertia EX
- Siren: Blood Curse
- Wall-E
- Haze
- Mercs 2

Burnout Paradise, easily the biggest let down, I loved Revenge, but Paradise was a hideous step backwards, I don't know if they were trying to be all revolutionary, but it was so backwards I couldn't be bothered, it got too serious...
MacRumorUser
Dec 15, 2008, 12:13 PM
Yeah they decided to take the FUN out of the game, and trawling back to restart a race was hideous.
I hope they go back to the roots and bring back proper race tracks (so that your not staring at a tiny map, you can actually enjoy the race) around a city and inject the game with a large overbite of FUN once more.

Gears of War 2 by far. My drunken slovenly brother is a huge fan of the "series" so far so I thought I'd give it a proper go.
No story, such epicly basic gameplay, the utmost horrific dialogue I've ever heard outside of Hollywood. I don't know what people see in it. No depth, just cheap tat with texture loading problems (even when playing from the HDD). Maybe that's why people like it though, sorta like the Scary Movie films.
And runner up goes to GTA IV. That's not because it's a bad game as such, just it was hyped as being amazing and clearly wasn't as good as the earlier games in the series. I still prefer to run around GTA SA than any other.
Throw in some Unreal Tournament 3. Just another disappointing sequel that traded in fun for psuedo-realism, brown graphics and motion blur.
Seriously chaps, in 2009 please try to keep fun in games. Realism doesn't make a game good. Thx.

I agree with all the comments on Burnout. However, I still found it pretty fun and far from being one of the worst games this year. :) If you force yourself to forget about the format of the older games, and see it as an individual piece of gaming, it's still pretty good for what it is.

I'm going with ET: Quake Wars. My honorable mention is Star Wars The Force Unleashed. There just wasn't enough to this game, the story seemed shallow, the character was utterly boring, aiming was off, yada yada yada...
Why can't Lucas Arts make KOTOR 3 an RPG, not a MMORPG? That's all I really wanted for the last few years...

Wasn't Quake Wars released last year? I'm sure I recall the demo being out around the time of the TF2 beta.

Spore sucked so much, I didn't even finish it, biggest disappointment of the year and the single reason I don't respect Will Wright anymore.
I'll post some more later but I was also heavily disappointed by Far Cry 2.

Preparation H works wonders :)
Can I add to my list since this is the official?
Unreal Tournament 3...A pile of disappointment
Sonic Unleashed...WTF seriously?
Conan Game
Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts......just pure garbage
Tomb Raider Underworld...The controls just destroy this game for me.
HAZE.....facepalm...thats all I could do.
Too Human....WTF is this sh**?
Lost Odyssey....Almost got turned off of RPGs because of this game.
Army of Two.....Bulls***...Ed knows what I'm talking about.
I really didn't like the first Gears and part two just fell in line with its brethren.
Note: GTAIV was really bad as well.

Based on the games Ive played probably Far Cry 2, the world was boring and the missions were more repetitive than Assassins Creed, always being attacked by every person you saw just got annoying.
It beat Fallout 3 BUT lost to Fallout 3 for Best RPG? Say wha?
Fable is a multi genre game, it might not have better RPG elements than Fallout 3 so they gave it to Fallout 3. Now what is stupid is when games at the Spike awards win GOTY but dont win best game for their respective console, that makes no damn sense.

I know I'll get flamed for this: but...
MGS4
I just can't get into it. I borrowed it from a friend for a while and it was just too d@mn slow. I played the original way back on the PS1 and really liked it, but haven't played one since. I've also played Splinter Cell games and liked them. Maybe my attention span has shorten since I've gotten older, but I don't have the time to spend an hour just going through one building, making sure I don't get spotted. I've definitely turned into a "run and gun" gamer with COD4 or Halo.
The game looked nice and all, but I felt like I spent so much time in the menus and watching cut scenes that I wasn't really playing.

Too Human definitely makes my list. Finished the first round.. and I'm 17% through the game? Come on!
Snore, I'm sorry, I meant Spore definitely makes my list. How could a body item's stats not stack? What's the point then?
Anything on the Wii.
While I loved Fable 2, it was too short. Why have different "classes" when through the course of the game you can easily max out everything?
Funny, I liked Lost Oddessy. It was a harkening back to original RPGs with no frills and weirdly feminine male characters. :-)

Actually I forgot Mario Kart came out this year, I'll replace FC2 with that. I only played it for a few races since since I was at a friends house waiting for Rock Band 2 to be set up, but what I did play I was bored to tears. Its just too slow and too easy. Mario Kart 64 was fun but ever since Diddy Kong Racing the series has been so boring.

Speaking of not my style, I bought Gears of War today -- it was cheap like ME, so only $29. To me it feels like an adult action-figure game. I keep on looking for my hands as I dive around cover. The best part is that I can just shoot blindly from cover. :) I'm playing it on "HARDCORE." WHoOoOOoOOooooo. What were they thinking with the cheeseballl blood? Exactly. I just thought it would be funny, because MRU's list would be empty. :D
I've drudged through a few games I didn't like. For example Xena Warrior Princess on the N64 is one of the worst games I've encountered and I completed it. It cost me $7 at Target. I brought it home and beat it in less than a half hour by repeatedly pressing any button.

My biggest disappointment:
Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Huge drop from the fun Melee was. In fact, I would go back and play Melee if I could choose. The game was total fan-service, but the gameplay felt like it took a backseat. Subspace Emissary was a disaster to what it could have been.

My worst of the year?
- Spore (PC). Tedious, boring rubbish. I didn't bother finishing the Space Age it was that crap.
- Banjo Kazooie 3 (360). Utter tripe, Rare should be ashamed they released this. I'm ashamed my other half paid for it.
- Wii Music (Wii). Nintendo further kill the Wii as a serious console, and further pander to the idiotic masses.
Rest of them were at least entertaining enough to complete, even though they may not be amazing (looking at you, Force Unleashed).

Dec 19, 2008, 04:30 PM
Only one that really bothered me was Too Human. It was like the game wanted you to die so you could see the death animation a million times.
And just a word about Spore, I think it was over hyped. A lot of people approached it as something it could never be because it was sold as some sort of uber game to rule them all. I actually had quite a bit of fun, but I am a scientist.

I was most disappointed with GTA4. It took out much of the stuff I love of early ones and replaced with stuff I didn't like so much. It was a good game on many levels, but I didn't enjoy it. Stopped after about 25 hours and don't think I'll ever touch the game again...not even for random mayhem (which I used to love to do) now I'll do more running around in Crackdown or Assassin's Creed

Well technically Infinity Ward gets COD5, this one doesn't have a number. I know, I know, I should probably just shut my face, but that always bugs me. :D
Yeah I found I enjoyed COD:WAW more than COD4, not because it was a better game, but there was that element that was lacking that kept me grounded in reality. I could actually [/b]laugh[/b] when I died, unlike COD4, where everything was so perfect, that if you died, it felt like the world was coming to an absolute end because you lost your amazing kill streak (which, looking back, weren't very spectacular at all).

Halo 3, for me this is the worst game of the year.
I cant believe i even pre ordered Halo 3, i hated it, it was just a copy and paste of the first game. As a franchise its not worth half the attention it gets. Its bland, offers little challenge, has no depth, its graphics were mediocre (what's with the excessive bloom?) and has a plot more wobbly than a 50's tv sci-fi set and even worse it's campaign is borderline criminally short and highly unimaginative.

Mine are:
- SSBB, Wii: I just plain didn't get it. Poké-what-now? Pica...chew??!
- Mario & Sonic Olympics, DS: What was I thinking... got a good trade-in price though
- Spore, PC: Dull, dull, dull.
Special 'Flawed, but I love it' award:
- Tomb Raider: Underworld, 360: Enjoyed every second of it as I was playing through... but it's sorely missing the replay value of Legend (time trials, unlockables). Plus, Legend handled relics/treasures much better. In Underworld they were just shiny-things-in-jugs, whilst Legend would tease with a golden glowy object sat somewhere apparently unreachable leading to beard-scratching hours of 'how the fsck do I get up there!!?' followed by a feeling of sheer awesomeness once I'd figured it out.
My Best of 2008:
- Mario Kart Wii: completed it 100% and still addicted to online races
- Pure, 360: Dumb, but fun ATV racer
- Rock Band, 360 (I think that was '08 for us in the UK): Making my bass-playing dreams come true
- GoW 2, 360: Just completed it tonight. Good switch-off-brain shooter. Not as sophisticated as it pretends to be, but I enjoyed it. Plus, GoW2 online is much less of a headshot w*nkfest than its predecessor's online matches degenerated into. I still prefer Halo 3 online for sheer comedy.
- Fallout 3, 360: Just started it, but loving it.
A pretty good year, really.
(oh, was Halo 3 2008? I'll add that to my favourites then)

Thats so sad to hear. When I play tested it at EA is wasn't amazing but certainly fun and had zero technical issues. Then I hear the retail has framerate issues, control issues.... it's a bummer.
Skate 2 on the other hand, is MUCH better retail than it was pre-release.

Yeah the game is fundamentally flawed. You are given this massive tri-city map- which is nice- but this is totally undermined by the fact that to go to a race you just punch down on the d-pad and select a race from a map. You are your car and then plonked down in a race. Pointless!
And yeah like you said- there are issues with the frame rates and well the whole game just feels like it was "rushed" to release. The need for speed series has gone a bit off since Most Wanted and Carbon. Until EA get it sorted- Midnight Club get my money.

Really ?
I've noticed all the need for speed games this generation have exhibited this shuddering effect / weird framerate thing. It really is the only racing game series that has made me physically motion sick whilst playing it.
The fact that it is in all the NFS games this generation led me to believe it wasn't necesserily a framerate hitch, but a design choice to make the game shuddery.
Either way I hate the games because of it.

Call of Duty : World at War....I don't know how people expected this game to be better then COD4
I prefer COD4 a lot more, but I don't think World At War was bad by any means...I'm glad they thought of something "new" with the whole WWII genre as opposed to doing the Normandy stuff for the umpteenth time in video game history.
For me:
- Gears of War 2: Sorry guys, but I thought it felt bloated and nowhere near as good as the original.
RUNNER UP
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Really overhyped. I didn't like it, not one bit. The whole story part got frustrating very quickly.
WINNER
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Alright, so the cutscenes were apparently aimed at the fans of the series that wanted answers to things from the previous games, but in catering to that new players felt somewhat alienated. I thought the cutscenes were ridiculous - skip them and you have a few measly hours of gameplay. It's unfair to market and sell this as a game and for the price of a game - it's more of an interactive movie than anything else, so to charge as much as something like GTA IV which, while not perfect was still really enjoyable, had many, many, many hours of actual gameplay...well, I feel it's kind of a ripoff. Only redeeming thing I can think of is the graphics.
I'm not going to nominate GTA IV, although I'm tempted for a few reasons. There's a few glitches (I was one of the people that suffered from a PS3 that would lock up from playing and sometimes refused to load the game if I was signed into PSN...thankfully they patched that within the week) and the repetitiveness makes it somewhat boring by the end. However, it suffers from no major flaws like the games I mentioned above, and despite it being repetitive, it still ended up being very entertaining. When I'm bored it's always the game I put on - if I feel like driving around like a maniac with no repurcussions I open party mode - if I feel like a challenge I'll open my completed save and work up a wanted level, and try to evade the cops :P

Worst for me was Resistance 2.
-It was short. Resistance 1 was really awesome for it's length.
-Could only carry 2 weapons at a time. Resistance 1 you could carry all weapons.
-Graphics weren't as good as the first.
-When you're in a battle with ALL Allied troops, the character you're playing was sticking out like a sore thumb. Every bad guy was aiming for you even if there were 100 other "good guys" with you.
-Able to be killed too easily. I would walk into an area and die within a few seconds. Didn't matter which difficulty setting.
-VERY poor story line in my opinion.
-Horrible ending for a really good game franchise.

Most disappointing game for me was Gears Of War 2 and CoD WaW.
Both didn't live up to the games that came before them. Gears 1 & CoD 4 were the best games for 360, their sequels were a MASSIVE letdown, the chainsaw on Gears 2 is way too powerful and CoD WaW is not 60 frames a second. This amongst other reasons make these the let-downs of last year.
