Swapping iPod mini Hard Disk?

Has anyone out there tried plugging a different CF memory card (e.g. 1GB IBM Microdrive) into an iPod mini?

As other threads have noted, the Hitachi 4GB Hard disk costs $499 on its own. For those of us who have decent sized microdrives for a digital camera, being able to upgrade to a 4GB Microdrive *and* use our old cards to get a smaller-capacity (e.g. 1GB) iPod mini for $249 is quite an attractive deal...

My questions kind of the same, in reverse. If you gut a mini, can you put the Micro Drive in a Digital Camera, say like a Canon Digital Rebel. And will it read it?

I haven't actually tried it, but it should work -- from the photos it looks to be a standard CF card (compare photos from gutted iPod mini in link from my first post to this (http://www.tristatecamera.com/lookat.php3?sid=cxugl51c&sku=HITM4GBK&cs=store.php3&store=3&levels=00290271&st=0)). It would likely need to be formatted but it should work just fine...

According to posts on iPodLounge.com, the drive does NOT work in anything but the iPod Mini and a few USB card readers. From what I've read on that site, people can't get the card to read in any digital camera (even after formatting the drive in every possible format, including FAT 32), and several people have attempted to use it in a digital Rebel with no success.
