Businessweek's Arik Hesseldahl spoke (http://www.businessweek.com/technology/ByteOfTheApple/blog/archives/2008/12/steve_jobs_will.html?campaign_id=rss_blog_byteoftheapple) with VP at IDG World Expo Paul Kent, who assured him that Steve Jobs was expected to speak at Macworld San Francisco's keynote and that a joint announcement was coming soon."We haven't made the announcement yet. We usually do this in concert with Apple…I have no reason to believe that plans are not moving ahead," for Jobs to speak.Steve Jobs has traditionally given the Macworld Expo keynote speech during which new products and plans are revealed. The lack of an official announcement has generated some interest and concern (http://blogs.oreilly.com/digitalmedia/2008/12/no-jobs-at-macworld.html) about the event. Hesseldahl points out that Jobs absence at a Macworld keynote would be seen "as a bad thing."

...has generated some interest and concern. What?
Maybe Jobs is sick as it seems to be insinuating itself in the article or he just has a lot of stuff going on and being prepared to be revealed... hopefully :apple:http://seoagora.com/img/589/d08l1104oulu/smiley2.gifhttp://seoagora.com/img/308/s08e1024rvou/champagne.gif

It would be about time! Except if I've already ordered a Sony by then I may be mad at myself :D
I just interpreted that as that there may be nothing to announce. Other than the Mac Pro and the 17" Macbook Pro, I don't think they'd do much but bump stuff. Now granted, those may be HUGE changes, but Apple's all focused on the cheaper stuff in terms of the big events.

Yeah...I mean is there something wrong with them? (I'd like to know, 'cause whatever I buy it's a lot of money :( ) The AW I'm looking at has a similar price to the Macbook Pro, but has a physical wifi switch and an Intel chipset, Blu Ray, and a TV tuner.

It's still too soon to launch the iPhone tablet. If they are planning to use ARM chips and not Intel chips then it's just too soon. And they won't say anything until it's ready.
I'm expecting to hear about updates to the iMac and Mac Pro. On the Mac Pro front we might see Nehalem chips and on the iMac side I'm expecting juiced up graphics capabilities and (possibly) a design more in line with the new cinema display and (possibly) a bump to a quad core processor though not Nehalem just yet.
It's also too soon to talk about Snow Leopard. There might be some discussion about iLife/iWork updates but I'm not holding my breath there. I'm guessing iLife will get a bump with Snow Leopard and iWork will follow shortly after.
Oh, and I could see them announcing a 17" MBP based on the new manufacturing technique now that the first batches of MB and MBP15 are out and about. That one might be scuttled by the economic outlook, but my gut tells me that it kills them to have such a mixed up product line at the moment.
It's an open question as to whether Steve makes the presentation, but I think he simply has to. He's set too much of a precedent in the past. Then again, if Steve is good for anything it's breaking precedent.

Jobs really should begin passing the torch. His personality and presence is dangerously intertwined with the company. What would help would be a killer keynote without Jobs.
And that would start all sorts of speculation that Jobs is sick again or about to retire.
But a keynote delivered by Ive would be incredible.

I hope they don't use ARM chips. The iPod touch 2nd gen is the fastest mobile OS X device they ship, and it's completely straining against that CPU. I can't imagine something that's supposed to be more fully featured trying to run on that thing...plus it's much more useful if it can run REAL OS X of some version.

Quite understandable. It also would send a calming influence to the Stock price too...
Of course, what I wouldn't mind is for Steve to provide some lighter moments. Two things I can think of would be:
Announce/demo an app for the iPhone that puts Bill & Jerry Seinfeld online.
Provide 'Market Guidance' that Katie Huberty's IQ has been downgraded ... to 65.

We all need to shut up about the economy. I mean come on! The only way in which it has affected my family is that gas is cheaper now. That's really it. Apple has 25 billion dollars and no debt. They'll be fine.
Also, we also need to keep dreaming on the Blu-ray thing.

I suspect you are right. Heck, I bet lunch you are right. But that does not mean it will happen... look at everything else that would be "easy" to do right now: put FireWire back in, update the Mini, and (dare I go there) make a screen that's not also a mirror. Think we'll see those?

Good for you. I'm thrilled that the downturn hasn't affected you. Unfortunately there are a few million other people that are losing their homes as a result of this. Are you going to tell those people to shut up about the economy?

It's getting to the point where I don't care any more. The low point was when Steve talked about a phone and not much else during macworld. And then there was that "special event" where all he could announce was that the iPod Shuffle was now available in multiple colors and the nano would be tall and curved. And then at the next event they talked about a new manufacturing process for notebook cases.
This time I bet he announces that Apple notebooks will ship with a free trial size package of screen cleaner. Oh and "one more thing... In six months Snow Leopard will ship with zero new user facing features. Thanks for comming."
I hope I'm wrong but I'm not betting on it. I doubt we will see the mid-tower, blu-ray, netbooks or anything but "speed bumps" at most.

He is surely the best presenter on Earth, no doubt about it. Check his keynote on the G4 Cube...what an awesome moment of RDF..!
But I really hope he's had some time to recover from his latest ailments, gain some weight and come back in full force, hopefully with a jacket and no tie as was the case with his earlier keynotes at Apple post-'97...GO APPLE!

Steve's keynote high water mark was - hands down - the initial iPhone announcement. He was practically in tears; thanking friends, family... he was uncharacteristically sentimental. Very much felt like he knew it was his last (if not his most important). Was bizarre...
And while I think there are more Stevenotes ahead, none will come close to surpassing that epic iPhone keynote.

Well if Steve were not going to present the keynote, it would make the most sense to delay that message as long as possible to not have more companies pull out of the show and also get as many people as they can to sign up to attend the show. I don't doubt that if they announced that either Jobs would not present, or that Apple would not present at the keynote (the former seeming more likely every day to me, the latter seeming like a long shot) that attendee numbers would be way down. I don't envy Paul Kent his job. He does an awesome job of putting on the show every year. I just hope Apple decides to announce that Steve will be there and does that soon. I will be there again for another of many MW Expo's and keynotes. It would just not be the same without Steve there to give the speech.

Little to know news...
Updates done early in the year (new macbooks/pros in October, new ipod in September)....

Either this economy is hitting worse, Steve not well (which we know there has been a lot of false speculations this year)..
or the fact they released they are not going to try to dispell leaks and rumors, they tightened ship and there is a big surprise planned.
dunno - but no news lead to too much rumors and worries.

No Mac OS X on generic PC hardware
Yes, it is quite unlikely that OS X will be made available for non-Apple hardware as long as Steve Jobs is in charge.
On the other hand, the pressure on Apple has been increasing steadily since they migrated to Intel processors and they have a great opportunity there. I'm sure they would easily make more money with OS X software licenses than they could ever make with Mac hardware. So I would not categorically rule it out anymore.
In fact, they wouldn't have to do much to make this fly: All they had to do is remove the hardware-dongle code inside OS X and hand-out a hardware compatibility list to interested companies like Dell so that they can ship compatible machines with a pre-installed OS X. In other words, they'd only have to clone Microsoft's very well working OEM business model and they'd be extremely successful.
Snow Leopard could be exactly the right version of OS X for that launch: No legacy PowerPC support, Intel architecture only. And with the still lacking acceptance for Vista, the launch window couldn't be any better than now.

PowerBook G5 next tuesday?
Safari feels snappier?
Cinema Display updates any day now?
10-finger gesture support for Snow Leopard?
Mac Mini will die?
Final Cut Studio finally Cocoa?
Let me just finally get the new Mac Pro for God's sake...
This really made me chuckle.... Especially the "Safari feels snappier" line. Man, I needed that.

When they stop growing is the time to go OEM, sooner than that would be stupid i think. But Dell wants it bad, they already have different models that are 100 % hardware compatible with osX except for the EFI compatibility.

Did anybody notice how many Apple products were in the Disney movie "Bolt"? I think Stevenote is going to introduce a whole new era of computing with an iDog - does your Internet and fetches a ball all in the same product, all without cleaning up pet mess.
Then again, maybe the dearth of rumors for the upcoming Macworld means Steve finally found the internal snitches at Apple and its vendors and had them assassinated. Or just locked in a closet somewhere. Or cut off one of their fingers or something.

It is obvious that Jobs is going to be at Macworld unless there is some sort of tragety that happens. We would all die without him.
Does anyone think that we could see new products a few days after Macworld and not just hear what will happen later in 2009?

Steve'd better be there.... there is NO way i'm watching a keynote done by ...ugh... Phil Schiller!
No love for Phil, huh?
I don't think many people can step into Steve Jobs' shoes for these keynotes, but my first pick would be Phil Schiller because he's one of those few executives who lets it slip from time-to-time that he actually has a goofy sense of humor. I think that could be turned into a great replacement for Steve's stage presentations. Besides, I like Phil's way of presenting things. He's definitely less epic-sounding than Steve but sometimes that's a good thing. Everything unveiled on stage does not need to be THE GREATEST THING WE'VE EVER DONE, SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO CHANGE THE WAY THE COMPUTING/MUSIC/PHONE WORLD WORKS.

Jobs really should begin passing the torch. His personality and presence is dangerously intertwined with the company. What would help would be a killer keynote without Jobs.
And that would start all sorts of speculation that Jobs is sick again or about to retire.
But a keynote delivered by Ive would be incredible.
It might make sense for Ive to deliver the keynotes. Having the CEO deliver the keynote is really unusual. If you watch the parade of CEOs that Steve has brought on stage you see that most of them are not competent at public speaking and know little about their products features. The MW keynote should be delivered by a product manager/marketing person/designer as they really know the product and have a passion about it.

And... that's what Steve is. Before he dropped out of college, his major was advertising. He knows how to sell a product, and that's what he does every time he walks on stage.
The Reality Distortion Field works because in the way he presents, Steve makes you believe that the product is amazing, and he makes you believe that it is amazing by believing himself that it is amazing.

I'm a fan of a S.J. keynote - with the January 2003 three-size Power Book Alu notebook intro being one of my favorites. But my excitement is tempered because I see Apple producing a few revisions that seem to miss the mark, at least for me. In mind here, I have the last S.J. hosted event where matte screens on MacBook Pros were nixed as well as the separate track pad button. Perhaps Steve has read all of the photography sites panning the beloved notebooks in their last iteration and will bring back reasonable screens at least.

Yes, you can tell that every word is carefully chosen and rehearsed, to sell the products, even while appearing off the cuff.
The Reality Distortion Field works because in the way he presents, Steve makes you believe that the product is amazing, and he makes you believe that it is amazing by believing himself that it is amazing.
I don't think he does. It's really clear that he thinks he's much smarter than most of his customers, and revels in making them applaud even minor ideas or improvements, and ignore glaring omissions.
Anyone who's done similar dog and pony shows, can recognize (and even admire) such a refined BS artist.

He must be at the Keynote if he is the CEO. I also hope that he is the main speaker.
Without Jobs, Apple would not exist. I hope he continues to be the CEO for a long time, and not end up like Bill Gates.Apple would certainly be in a better place if Steve weren't there tomorrow than when Scully/Board kicked him to the curb in the mid-80s. He's putting in the right people and a roadmap of product, culture/mentality firmly in place right now.
Apple will exist. And it will thrive and prosper.

Well. If you are asking if there is something wrong with Sony computers, I'd say yes. They do use inferior hardware (had harddrive failure and overheating issues), and there is a lot of software issues. I had an Sony FZ-470E, after dealing with various issues, I sold it and bought a macbook. Much better computer. The screen is much better on mac than on any other computer. As for blurary support, there are external drives that support mac, and truth be told they really are not that great. Using bluray on a laptop you get really bad battery life.
Hope that helps a little.

Ok a few things.
1)Steve may not be feeling well. He has had health issues. Apple may be waiting to see if he is up to the task.
2)He has been sharing the stage more and more over the last two years.
3)He may not feel there is anything GREAT to say, if he cannot get the record companies to go DRM free. I don't think Steve is all that excited about introducing new computers anymore, he is about "game-changing."
4)Apple and IDG may be watching the attendance numbers and ticket holders. This HAS to be a down year, dare I say it the LAST MacWorld as we know it. The last downturn(the dot com bust) killed Boston/NY.
Having said all this, I think Jobs takes the stage and shows off the new MAC PRO and a new cooler mini and "something special" either a tablet or a mid priced tower. I think the record companies are holding this up because I think the BIG announcement is this...
DRM free and one more thing...THE BEATLES on ITUNES with Paul and Ringo onstage. I guarantee this IS a way that Apple would spend some of it's BILLIONS. The reality isn't nearly as cool as the PRESS.

Historically, it should be noted that the Macworld announcement always comes from IDG Expo, and the WWDC announcement directly from Apple. Great post jaw04005!! So historically, latest date for an announcement was Dec 18th...
To me it seems strange, I mean, if he's going to do the keynote then why not confirm it as early as possible to encourage ticket sales and raise interest?
One explanation I could think of is that because the rumour mill is more mainstream these days (and generally gets more press attention) Jobs may not want to impact xmas sales of consumer goods by increasing the profile of this event too early.

I think I could watch a keynote done by Jonny Ive...He captured my attention when he was speaking in October. The only thing is he should learn to say "Aluminum" like everyone else.
Tim Cook, although a little drier, was not bad either. He kept me attention in October too. Of course, in both cases, I kept thinking "ok, when do I get to hear Steve?"
However, that being said, Steve Jobs has that something about him that just causes people to follow him. He could come to Macworld, introduce the iTurd and people would be standing outside an Apple store, just waiting in line to be the first one to hold this piece of ******.
Unfortunately, Steve is not immortal and one day Apple will have to survive without him. We all hope that day doesn't come any time soon but I am realistic enough to realize that he is 53 and I am 24...I will (barring any tragedy) see the day where Apple no longer has Steve Jobs. It is sad but true.

Here's hoping for a Mid-Tower Mac Pro. But I won't hold my breath.
That would be very nice, but if it happens I do not think we will see it until after "Snow Leopard" comes preinstalled on the Mac. The same number of people that buy a mid-tower Mac Pro with "Leopard" will buy one with "Snow Leopard", but not everyone that buys one with "Leopard" will update it to "Snow Leopard". Now what is realistic is:
iMac - updated graphics, FireWire400 dropped, mini DisplayPort, and a quad-core processor (CTO at least)
Mac mini - updated with MacBook internals, mini DisplayPort, and FireWire400 dropped; however, Apple could replace it with FireWire800 since the Mac mini is a desktop model.
iWork & iLife - It has been 16 months so it is due for an update, but Apple might wait until "Snow Leopard" so 1) they are compiled 64-bit top-to-bottom from day-one instead of doing it through an update, or more likely because 2) some of the applications will require QuickTime X.
Cinema Displays - especially if the Mac mini is updated.
MacBook Pro 17" - We will get a date on when it will start shipping.
