View Full Version : TV Shows - What's Next For Me?

Whilst I like film, especially for comedy, I don't believe it can touch TV shows for character story, depth or story. I've become a massive fan of TV Shows over the last couple of years. The US has this locked down, as far as I'm concerned. In England it is rare to have a Drama series that touches the quality of the US shows. My favorites are probably 'The West Wing' and 'Six Feet Under'.
The problem is that in my search for the best TV series, I've watched a lot of the classics and have become a bit of a TV Show nazi and can't stand bad writing - so what is next?
The West Wing - Done
The Sopranos - Done
Six Feet Under - Done
The Shield - Done
24 - U2D*
Heroes - U2D
Lost - U2D
Dexter - U2D
Grey's Anatomy - U2D
Dirty Sexy Money - U2D
Life - U2D
Chuck - U2D
Prison Break - U2D
Two And A Half Men - U2D
* Up to date.
Those are the ones that I can think of, there might be some others that I've omitted. However, I need my next marathon of TV shows! The ones that jump to mind are 'Deadwood', 'The Wire' (which I watched 2 episodes of and didn't like but have since been told by everyone that it's amazing) and I've even been recommended 'Entourage' - and I have no idea what that is.
Any ideas?

If you are in the UK i am not sure what is available.
if you like comedy, i think "The IT Crowd" is brilliant. I am told that "Father Ted" is as well.
Would also very highly recommend "Sport Night" - it was one of Aaron Sorkin's first series - exceptional. "The Wire" is incredible but you need to get thru the first couple of episodes to get into it.
"Arrested Development" is one of the best comedies, hands down.
Have not watched it yet, but apparently "Mad Men" is incredible.

I can't watch Mad Men. It's like watching a show about my daily life, since I'm in advertising. The scenery and clothes have changed, but the business hasn't. :)

Yeah. I've heard that at least 10 times. I'm going to force myself to buy the first season on DVD and then I can't let it slip from my grasp.
Have not watched it yet, but apparently "Mad Men" is incredible.
I've heard of it but not seen any of it. Another one to add to my list.

If you like Sci-Fi, Battlestar G is where it's at! Great writing (mostly) and excellent action. Make sure you don't get the 70's version by mistake...
As far as current shows, those mentioned by others are all pretty good.
Check out NBC's Life. It's a cool, hip and edgy show. The lighter side of crime fighting, not a comedy, per se, but it's got some hilarious moments and great characters.

yes it is - and if you loved the west wing you should also love sports night - maybe even more.
for an opposite of that, you could look at "twin peaks" - slow but brilliant in its own way. if you like complexity and something really well written it is great.

Entourage is a sometimes comedic capture of the larger than life moviestar persona of Vincent Chase, his brother Johnny Drama, friend Turtle, and manager Eric Murphy. Turtle has a name but I'll let you watch all five seasons to find out what it is. Jeremy Piven is the real shining star as Ari Gold, Hollywood super agent. The boys are from Queens, living the life and struggling to make it at times. Its lighter than the other two programs.
Rescue Me is a fireman's drama. Denis Leary stars as Tommy Gavin, recovering alcoholic FDNY firefighter in post-9/11 New York. The crew lost Tommy's cousin Jimmy Keefe in the towers and each of them are dealing with post traumatic stress and family issues in their own way. Tommy has a very close relationship with Jimmy's widow Sheila, and his wife Janet doesn't appreciate that Tommy is always working while she is struggling to raise his two daughters and his son Connor at home alone for extended periods, because of the long hours of the FDNY.
Mad Men is a drama set in 1960s New York, at the Sterling Agency on Madison Avenue. Its a historically accurate take on the high life in the 60s. Drink. Smoke. *****. Advertising executives living a fast life in New York, its one of the best shows on basic cable.

The only show I watch outside of really bad crap is Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. I never got much into the other Law & Order series, but I absolutely love SVU. The storylines can get gritty and downright disturbing at times, and some of the twists and turns really catch you off guard.
Of course, it has it's boring or predictable episodes, but those are few and far between.
Unfortunately, I have watched almost every episode from all 10 seasons now within a year, so my viewing has slowed.

I'm something of a TV snob myself and I consider it one of the best shows on TV from the past couple of years, and certainly the single most underrated.
There's only been seven episodes due to the writer's strike, but I believe it's coming back to television soon...

Crime/Drama - The Wire
I've never been so drawn into a television show...ever.
Comedy - Arrested Development
Free on hulu.com. If you prefer the discs, all 3 seasons are 28 bucks on Amazon US today as the deal of the day. Pretty funny story about a rich dysfunctional family.
Sci-Fi - Fringe
Kind of like Lost meets X-Files. This one really pulled me in as well.
Drama - Rescue Me
One of the most true to life shows of firefighters. This career runs in my family, so it seems so real to me.

+1 on Life
+1 on House (Find the second or third season episode when he gives the lecture about the three people with leg pain. Easily one of the best hours of television. Ever. No joke.)
Latest guilty pleasure is My Own Worst Enemy, which has only a few more episodes. Has a kind of an Alias vibe. (When Alias was good, it was awesome. The trouble is, when it wasn't good, it stunk something horrible.)

You need to be able to devote 'quiet time' to it. You need to have space to take in the subtle beauty to it. It's not something to scrunch pop corn through, it's serious and heartfelt.
The depth of the story lines and the characters is unbelievable. Michael C Hall (now does 'Dexter') plays a gay funeral director and it's one of the finest television performances ever.
It attacks a lot of issues and was groundbreaking for me. If any TV Series had an effect on my life, this is it. Best ending to a show ever, I cried my heart out.

If you're into Sci-Fi I also suggest
Firefly (1 season comprised of 14 episodes, plus the movie Serenity)
Eureka
Babylon 5 (5 seasons and 5 movies - absolutely great I'm still finishing up the 5th season and then moving on to the other 4 movies - the first one is the pilot)
Terminator: Sarah Conner Chronicles is decent but I mainly watch it for the longing for more of the saga back from the T2 days but it definitely doesn't measure up to T2 quality writing or acting.
Doctor Who is good as well, hopefully I can watch the new one on Veoh shortly after Christmas, I hate the US being 3 weeks behind.
Torchwood is good but I don't know if they're going to do another season anyone else know?
My Own Worst Enemy is good, but I do believe they just showed their last episode (only 9)
and I don't really recommend Fringe unless you have nothing else to watch (which is the reason I watch it) I've watched all the episodes on Hulu cause I work overnight on the weekends and it kills the boredom when out of things to watch. Also Sanctuary falls into this same category, I watch it but just to kill the boredom.
Outside of the Sci Fi TV category,
I like The Office, My Name Is Earl, Burn Notice and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

Some good recommendations so far. I'm similar in my quest for tv series to watch. A few series I haven't seen mentioned so far that you might be interested in:
- Stargate SG-1: If you're into Sci-Fi, this is a great show. A lot lighter/more fun than Battlestar. Long story arcs, good character development. One of my favorite series along with The West Wing, definitely re-watchable many times.
- The 4400: The predecessor to Heroes. Similar in some ways, better in others. Had an excellent story going, but was abruptly canceled due to the writers strike before they could finish it up. Still worth watching though.
- The Dresden Files: Based off the books by Jim Butcher, about a wizard for hire in modern day Chicago. Only lasted a season but was a good show. The books are even better.
- True Blood: A fairly popular drama on HBO about vampires based on the Sookie Stackhouse books Charlaine Harris. A bit slow moving and heavy on romance/sex plot lines, but still entertaining.

Top of my list to recommend right now would be Friday Night Lights. I just started in the early summer and wanted to watch one after another. It's that good. It's about the lives and relationships in a small Texas town that revolve around football. I know it might sound bland, but from what I can tell it's a gem that most people haven't found and has low raitings.
I would say Everwood, but only one season (of four) is out on dvd. Rumor has it that 2-4 may be out in 2009, but that could still be iffy.
I have heard good things about The Wire, but I'm not sure it's something I'd be quick to check out. I've also heard great things about Deadwood, but the few parts I've seen are cringeworthy. My friend still maintains it's historically accurate and that it would be common of the folk to curse every other word...
My aunt actually recommended Skins, but I don't think that's out on dvd in the US, and BBCA is likely editing it heavily.
I also appreciate the descriptions from other posters without giving away plot points (e.g. ghostee and 4400 - I watched some, but have yet to finish up).

Agreed. I watched season one of Californication in just a few days and after the last episode, I was sad that there wasn't another season on iTunes yet.
I also have all the seasons of the Wire. It's a good show but I'm only halfway through season one. Weeks go by in between me watching each episode. I think season one started out to slow without allot of action. I'm more into shows like Lost and 24 where things happen from the start. Californication was cool just because of David being in it and, well, the naked chicks.

Fringe(FOX)
Bones(FOX)
True Blood(HBO).....really sexy show
Leverage(TNT)
Californication(ShoTime)
Diary of a Call Girl(ShoTime)...I think thats the name of the show.
My Own Worst Enemy(NBC) is good but it doesn't make me excited for the next episode.

I really liked the first episode but the second and third were kind of weak. Good potential here.

I hope you know that ABC is canceling Dirty Sexy Money (unfortunately).

And Eli Stone, I believe? That sucks because I quite liked it. However, it is unlikely that is was going to rate in my top 10 - so it's no big deal, really.

Yeah the last two episodes were charity work although I found the second one with the container full of money to be on par with the 1st.
I really like the character chemistry between the team.

So, I've watched the first season of House. It's not bad, although it is still riding on the back of the brilliant acting by Huge Laurie at the moment. It needs some more depth, which it started to introduce during the end of the first season.
It's been good enough to warrant me trying the second series to see if the background and character stories develop.

Personally I'm on tenterhooks for the new Lost next week.

I just recently finished the 2 seasons of a show called Big Bang Theory.
Its a decent show that is pretty funnny. It is about some genius nerdy geeky types.

Diary of a Call Girl(ShoTime)
I think that is ITV made and imported to the US by Showtime, BTW you spelt Showtime wrong it is Showtime:p

You need to watch them all as it gets better each season :D

I couldn't watch that to save my life. Billie Piper with her 1 expression, it's like watching a painting on legs. And not a good painting.

Just discovered the show a couple of weeks ago. Went back for the first three seasons. I have not laughed that had in years...
Downloaded the torrent for first 3 seasons, but the dvd sets are cheap on amazon too.

My brother has lent me his Peep Show boxset, and although I'm only on the second series, I can already recommend it. It's very, very funny.
I'd also like to support the earlier recommendation for Band of Brothers, which is truly one of the finest programmes ever broadcast.

I don't think anyone's mentioned "Pushing Daisies" yet. It's not exactly what you'd call an "epic drama", but it's not your run of the mill sitcom either. Season 1 is available on DVD, but I think you can see all episodes up on ABC's web site.

Damian Lewis is a good actor, so I'm sure it's very good. I've heard many people say it is pretty epic. It's officially next on my list.

Due to recommendation on this thread, I have purchased the first 2 episodes of Stargate Atlantis from iTunes. I have never watched any Stargate before but have heard it's good.
I'm a pretty bit Star Trek fan (TNG, DS9 and VOY) so I'm hoping I'll like it.
One thing I am worried about though - do I need to have watched the original Stargate show to pick it up?

Anyone in the US should check out Babylon 5 on hulu.com they've got the 1st 2 seaons, it really is very epic, the first 4 seasons are great, the last one is kind of slow but is a good wrap up to the series.

House M.D.
The Office (Actually reccomending the American version, but I haven't seen the British)
Arrested Development
and Scrubs.
The first three have already been covered, but I don't believe anyone has brought up Scrubs yet. Excellent show.
As to the person who mentioned the Sarah Connor Chronicles, I know what you mean but the show just can't hold my attention.

I just finished watching it for the third time and I am not the type to re-watch many things. It is truly epic.
I'd also recommend reading the book.

The Office US
If you have seen season 1 of The Office UK skip it in the US version.
Scrubs
Stop watching at end of Season 7, Season 8 sucks, Season 7 was the perfect ending in my opinion.

+1 from me too. Along with Father Ted, Black Books, IT Crowd, Phoenix Nights, I'm Alan Partridge and Spaced it's a comedy I can watch again and again.

I have watched everything you have watched- and I will say that The Wire is the epic drama to end all epic dramas. There is a depth that does not exist in any of the shows on your list, and the writing is brilliant. This may be the best series to have ever been produced.

Deadwood is the best TV show I've ever seen.
Wanted to start the Wire next, but get mixed reviews. Have also been told that The Unit is with my time... anyone seen it and willing to recommend?
