I just shot some footage on a Sanyo Xacti flash memory camcorder. They are MPEG4 files. Opening FCP's audio/video settings page within a new project I can't find H.264 on the list of project codecs. When I bring the movie clips into the timeline I have to render everything.

Which project codec should I use to avoid rending out my footage?

H.264 is a distribution Codec

It's not likely to be a choice within sequence settings. I usually transcode all H.264 footage to something made for editing, 10 or 8-bit uncompressed; something that won't further degrade the footage with more compression.
