Boot Camp requires a full install - consider that your Boot Camp partition will be completely blank, what exactly would you be upgrading on that partition?
Remember if you install XP you'll need at least SP2.

Make sure to get an OEM version if you plan on keeping that computer for awhile. It will save you money.

You don't need XP - just buy a full version of Vista. If you can find an OEM version, it will work, as long as it's a full version.
If your campus software store sells an upgrade at a vastly discounted rate, that's great if you already have a full version of XP. In your case, that doesn't sound like it's gonna help you. Just bite the bullet and buy it like the rest of us did *wink*

You can buy the Vista upgrade DVD, no need to have a full version. And no need to have XP before. There is a trick making it possible to first install Vista via the upgrade DVD. Then upgrade it to full version via the upgrade key. People have tried this under Boot Camp as well, and it works. Google about it. You can also buy OEM version if you can, should be about the same price as an upgrade.

The worst thing that might happen is that the Boot Camp installation assistant will not accept the Vista Upgrade DVD and won't boot it. Big deal. Just boot the DVD manually and install Vista from it.

my friend told me something along those lines but i wasnt sure if i really could do that. I want to try and use my student vista upgrade cd because i get it for $24 and that would be the only reason i want to get windows OS. otherwise i have a windows pc if i really need windows for something. must say im liking OSX alot:)

It's the only way to clean install from Vista Upgrade media, and here's a guide if you're nervous.
