iPod touch Compatability Problem and Another Question

Firstly, I have a 1G iTouch charger thats plugs into the wall. I bought a 2G awhile ago, and when I tried to plug it in to the charger, it gave me a error says that it isnt compatible with the charger. I read into it, and it has something to do with apple switching they way that it charges. Is there a way to make it compatible, or is it a hardware problem?

How do I completely wipe everything off my 1G so I can sell it. I need to get everything off, so It's basically like right out of the box.
