How can I get my mpeg-4 videos to play on the AppleTV?

I jsut got a video camera and I was able to put it in iTunes and view them through iTunes, but I tried to install it on my appleTV and watch it on my appleTV but it does not show up on my movies section in the appleTV.

Do I have to convert it to some other format? and if so what program can I use to do that. On a side note, I do have an iMac.
 
Try opening those files in Handbrake 0.9.3. If it opens, click on the Apple TV preset to get a compliant file. The unfortunate reality is that there are many flavors of the MPEG-4 container (as with others) and some work and some don't.
