Chuck Klosterman has a short story about a game he'd come up with at a party where you have to think of the television equivalent of popular bands and musicians (it's in the book Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs). He called it "Monkees = Monkees" and it goes like this...
Choices are based on the following five criteria:
1. Longevity
2. Era
3. Critical Acclaim
4. Commercial Success
5. Aesthetic Soul
Examples he gives are:
Journey = Dynasty
The Rolling Stones = Gunsmoke
The Strokes = 24
Jimi Hendrix = The Twilight Zone
Devo = Fernwood 2 Night
Lynard Skynard = The Beverly Hillbillies
Molly Hatchet = Petticoat Junction
The Black Crows = That 70s Show
Hall & Oats - Bosom Buddies
U2 = M*A*S*H
Dokken = It's Your Move
The Eurythmics = Mork and Mindy
Further, he stipulates that individuals who go solo from an existing group need to be matched up to television shows that "spun-off" of an existing series, and so we have:
John Lennon = Maude
Paul McCartney = Frasier
George Harrison = The Jeffersons
Ringo Starr = Flo
David Lee Roth = Knots Landing
Do you disagree with any of his choices? Who are what is missing? Do you have some examples of your own?
