Don't have one. I would get one as soon as they fix whatever problem they are having with the batteries. Probably a 15GB one, when I do decide to get one.

Got th3 10gb 3G the day it came out. It have minor scratches on it since I didn't have an iSkin and used saran wrap. Then the Hd got problematic and got it replaced and it's been in my black iSkin and iShade ever since. Brand-spakin'-new!

The biggest drawback to the original iPod was that it was easy to scratch. I think in hindsight that it was a very poor design for a consumer electronics product. No other product I've ever owned was as easy to scratch up as the iPod. Singlehandedly the worse aspect of the iPod.
My 20GB is pretty scratched up even though I take very good care of it. I've just learned to stop worrying about the finish, and make the most of it, scratches and all.

i have a few small scrapes that i hope to clear up with some Ice Creme. My friend gave me a nice long cut starting at the upper left corner and going alll the way down, cutting through the apple logo, and continuing another quarter inch. Now he's not allowed to use it anymore.

Scratched up pretty good.
But that's a small price to pay (in addition to the small price I paid) for the bid I won on eBay.
Now I keep it safe in a Contour case.

Interesting... I was expecting to hear more from the "seriously messed up" people (not to be confused with "seriously messed up people").
My newer 20GB is holding up great after, what, a year or more of use? The holster case that came with the 2nd gen units was pretty good.
My older 5GB got scratched pretty bad within days of buying it. There was not protection for it, so it just sat in my backpack along with my, uh, leatherman...

Firmware updates and a reboot sorted out the battery issue. There are no scratches on it. I listen to it and use it every day and keep it in its snapon belt clip to protect it from knocks. I carry my films to and from school in it. Everybody in class has seen it but due to the cost of $709 NZ (student price) 20GB I dont think anyone else in my class will be ordering one in the near future.

Still got my 1G falling into the "minor blemishes" category
However I do tend to keep it on a velvet cushion inside a glass cabinet to which only I have the key.
It did suffer from the battery problems experience by many others, but by no where near as bad.
So I'm still a happy camper.:)

I've had mine since sept '03 and it's on the borderline between seriously messed up and banged up. It has 3 bumps, 2 on the side and one on the back. The back is covered with scratches so that you can hardly see the text at the bottom and the screen is also covered with scratches. I still love it tho. ;)

Mine would look a hell of a lot nicer if it didnt have the metal back. That was really dumb planning IMO. I'm pretty rough with mine, well I don't baby it. I use it like I use everything else. I'm active and I go places, I expect my "toys" to keep up with me and I don't buy toys for my toys (gaurds and protectors).
I'll probably get a mini soon.

Mine got fingerprints as soon as I took the protective wrapping off of it. It also has a slight scuff on the wheel, and I have no idea how it got there. The area covering the LCD is also slightly scratched as well. Pretty amazing for having it less than a month and keeping it in a Speck iPod Skin all the time. Oh, and it sucks all the dust and lint out of my jacket pocket too. There's quite a bit in there for a mesh pocket

My 2G 10Gig iPod is scratched up pretty good. Some, as others have noted, I have no clue how they got there. However, I do know how some got there...my wife dropped it a few weeks ago. It was a nasty fall but it still works fine! (I was hoping it was damaged beyond repair so I could get a 3G!)

There needs to be an option for "Not created yet" or "Still in the box" - I'm planning on buying an iPod in a couple months, so I guess although I don't own one, inevitably my iPod is in some form right now, whether it's sitting on a shelf somewhere or in pieces in some manufacturing plant!

My 2g 10gig iPod, although pretty scratched up, still works fine. I did a battery life test, and it lasted more than 11 hours! I was amazed...
Here are some pictures of my iPod that I took some time back, to demonstrate what certain cases can do to the iPod...

Both of my nieces have original 5GB iPods, one is VERY scratched up, the other is in good shape, BUT both still get excellent battery life! They got them right after they came out, and have been using them almost non-stop.

Bought a 2nd Generation 10GB model on clearance from the Apple Store back in June just after the 3rd Generation models were announced. Saved myself $100 and have just been absolutely thrilled with the little guy.
Bought Apple Care a few months later just to be sure to avoid any battery problems in the future. But so far, my iPod is used daily, about 8 months old and still holds like an 11 or 12 hour charge.
Mine's in perfect shape. Bought an iSkin case for everyday use and a Mareware case for use at the gym. After a few minor falls my iPod still looks and works like the day I bought it.
Bravo Apple!

1st gen. 5GB iPod over here. I love it. I use it every day. Battery life is great. It is scratched to all hell, but I think the scratches give it character. Scratches endured at work. Work is like a battlefield. Just me and my war buddy.

What timing for this poll!
My 3G 20Gb iPod got a huge scratch on the screen yesterday, it was a series of small scratches that made the artists name completely unreadable in the now playing view! The screen seemed like it was cloudy. This was bound to happen the one time Im in too much of a rush to take it out without my skin! I only put it in my jeans pocket with nothing else in there! Arrgghhhhh
Anyway looked up on the net and it seems a bit of brasso and a nice lint free cloth does the trick to get scratches out of the screen! I was pretty dubius but I give it a go as I really cant see the artists name at all so I cant make it worse. After about half an hour i can read the artist pretty well again and after 2 hours you cant even see the scratches unless you know where and what to look for and look across the ipod. It was so amazed and so happy. Im gonna get something to clean up smaller scratches now and hopefully it will be looking better than ever!
Edited: I wrote it in a rush the grammar was awful.

Yes, only a few minor blemishes on the outside casing. However, I've just discovered that the reason my iPod was charging but not mounting is because the FW cable was sagging. See my MacFixIt Forums post "iPod won't mount, but will charge" if you want more details about my recent short saga.

My one-year-old-or-so 10GB is doing pretty well. A few barely visible scratches, one small dent on the upper-right corner, one small scrape in the same place.
I always keep it in a case, though. Probably a very good thing given that I've dropped it on more than one occasion.

My 3G 10 gig has scratches all over it... and I make no effort to stop them. I have more things to worry about than a few scratches on my ipod, it still works great and a few battle scars are always good for memories. :P

I keep mine in pristine condition. It only comes out for music selection, and then back it goes into its sleeve. I also keep a Calvin Klein polish cloth with it to clean off my fingerprints after I touch it. I like to wipe the cloth over it when I hold it in my hands... it's mine, my own, my precious.

And my iPod has a blemish on the screen and a few scratches on the back, otherwise in perfect condition. I have it in the holster it came with and now a Marware case so it can't fall out.
And the battery is perfect. It charges and holds a charge for days and it plays for 8+ hours. And I live in Southern Arizona where it gets over 100 during the summer.

why is there even an option for "don't own an iPod"?
is it at all relevant to the topic that someone doesn't own one?
Anyway, i think the fact that the iPods are so easily scratched is possibly a good thing in that it encourages you to take better care of it/not bang it about etc...

The iPod is a monument to industrial design. I would *never* put it in a carrying case or protective covering because I think it look badass just the way it is, scratches and all.

my iPod is in pretty good condition, except for a few minor blemishes. there's a few very small scratches on the back, but you can only see them in the right light.
i used to just put my iPod in that black fabric case that came with it, but since i lost that i just go case-less. :D

My 9-month-old 30 gig is nearly pristine because it never leaves its case. I got a nice one from sfbags.com (http://sfbags.com/) that I'm pretty happy with. And for those occasional scratches, Novus #1 and #2 plastic polish works wonders (don't use the #3, it's too abrasive). I got some at The Container Store (http://www.thecontainerstore.com/) which just happens to be right across the street from the Costa Mesa Apple Store.

i selected like new, because, well, its brand new... had to get a new one after my 5 gig died for the second time and was out of warranty. but although its dead, it still looks golden, had it in a carrying case, non apple that held her close, and didnt expose anything
i left it in the car over night and i think it froze to death...

I wonder if the iPod Mini's scratch as easily. I haven't seen them in person, but they seem like they're made out of the same type of aluminum the PowerBooks are made out of, witch doesn't scratch easily...

My 4 month old 40 gigger is consistently covered with light scratching. Seems to be doing much better than my ibook.
To the poster who said they carried their ipod in the same pocket as their leather, ouch, that hurts just to hear. I carried a metal clad pda in the same pocket as my leatherman and its a mess now. Can't imagine what that would do to plastic. I won't even put keys in the same pocket as my leatherman, for fear of scratching that (that doesn't mean I'm afraid to use it for actual work).

one of those silicone skin thingies for the iPod.
Yeah it attracts a hell of a lot of dust and stuff, but it has no scratches, i'm happy.
Only drawback is that if I want to use the dock I need to take it off because the iPod with the skin is too thick to fit in there. :(
