Back in 1993, I remember hard drives were still in MBs. I think I had one that was about 250Mb or so and the ram was 32MB. Everything was so expensive, I think I remember 16MB ram going for nearly $100. The computer I had then was a 25mhz Packard Bell.

By the way, that ad is really not all that funny. That was once an up to date machine as all computers once were.

Nothing wrong with the ad. Someone may pick it up as a second computer or a cheap one for the kids. I recently sold an almost 6 year old computer on Craigslist. 2.53 Ghz, 512MB RAM, 80 GB HDD, 17 inch LCD monitor, speakers, printer, etc for $150. Guy wanted it as a computer for his young kids.

Uhhh...10 years ago, 4GB WAS fairly spacious.

My computer that I had all the way through college (bought brand new in 1993) was a Mac LC II, with 4MB of RAM and a 40MB hard drive. I think I may have updated it to 8MB of ram at some point, but I can't remember. It was a little slow, but did almost everything I needed it to. I used a compression program to make the drive pretend to be 80MB, but that's what I survived on for 4 years of college!

Who was it from IBM that said 20KB was more space than anyone would ever need? When we bought our first computer, it was the snappiest model on the floor - 60GB. The tech at Circuit City said "Oh, don't worry... you'll never fill up half that." What an idiot. :D

My first hard drive was 52 megabytes. And, unbelievably, it took a LONG time to fill. I was running mostly DOS 6.22 at the time, and installed Windows 3.11. Back then, partially because I was a control freak and partly to keep the hard drive trim, I could have told you the exact purpose of EVERY file stored on the hard drive (including everything under C:\WINDOWS, all 4 or 5 megabytes worth!) If I never used a certain DOS command, I deleted it to save space.

Eventually I did need a larger drive, and I bought one used from one of my classmates in grade 10. You know, That Guy. The one with the trenchcoat who could always get you whatever you needed, and always made you a good deal... He got me an 80 meg drive, and sold it to me for $80. "A dollar a meg -- that's a good deal, man." And he even threw in, for free, a few megabytes of MOD files that were still on the drive. Which was great, because it would have taken me hours to download all that music from a BBS using my 2400 baud modem!

I still have my old AST Advantage Adventure 6050d :P

Cyrix DX2 486 50mhz, upgraded from 4mb RAM to a whopping 16mb EDO !!
250mb Maxtor Hard disk but i also put in a Quantum 500mb Disk later on
Sony 2x CD-ROM Drive + Sound Blaster 16 Sound.
Still boots up fine, running DOS 6.22 / Windows 3.1 (A weird AST Version that has this funky desktop and can even do the text to speach thing!)

I remember when we bought it, cost £1500 and the hard disk was massive for the time.

Also got my old Compaq Presario Pentium 233mmx, 16mb ram upgraded to 48mb, 4gb Quantum Bigfoot 5 1/2" HDD, CD ROM shaped like a little rocket :P

The machine advertised in the CL posting isn't THAT old. I don't think it's quite worth $200 though. $150 maybe?

I just bought a Dell Latitude D600, Pentium M 1.5 GHz, 40 gig hard drive, 1 gig of RAM, with wireless and DVD and Windows XP, for $299 Cdn ($260ish in USD)
