Just received DP 1.8 and...

nicely shipped.. delivered about 1 week early.. took it out of box.. set it up... hit the power.. and got what looked like a system dump (kernel panic)..; in hindsight, i should have taken a picture.. but i rebooted and everything has been fine since..

I know without details, you wouldn't be able to help.. this is the first time Ive ever even seen OSX.. I have been a PC user my whole life..

The screen seemed to be complaining about my network.. It seemed to get an IP address from my router.. but then just hung.. when I restarted, everything worked fine..

Is there a log I can check to see what happened.. I just don't want this to be a sign of things to come.. I proceeded to set up the network after without any problems..

Check out your Console (in the Utilities folder in Applications)... You can access crash logs from there.

I doubt this will happen again, it is *really* hard to crash OSX - and I've tried!!

no, that wasn't it, it wasn't a packaged nice message like that, more like a core dump i've seen in nt server...

That's pretty much what I saw after installing the Mac OS X public beta. It wasn't exactly a nice introduction but the kernel panics have been few since then. You may never see another.

The graphical notice only comes up once the graphics subsystems have been initialised. The other is typical of a problem early in the boot process or 10.0.x or 10.1.x.

I'm sad to report I experienced what you are talking about more than once. You may want to check the memory in your machine. Mine was bad and was causing all sorts of problems, including what you described. At least that's what I believe was causing it. I've since replaced the RAM and haven't had a problem since.

Just take out any non-Apple installed RAM (ie stuff you may of put in yourself) and just plug the keyboard/mouse/screen and nothing else (no network/peripherals) and see if it boots up then.

I have a few of those kernal panics on my iMac. Pretty sure it's bad memory.

I wouldn't go saying that too loudly:p. You just need to know what pressure points to press, any system will crash if pushed over the edge.

I got kernal panics on my rev D. Imac 333 Only. Under OS X.2 and X.1

And when I swapped out memory all was well.

My sweetie's G4 tower would kernel panic occasionally at random intervals. It turned out to be her Apple mouse; she switched to a Logitech two-button scroll mouse, learned to right-click and scroll, and never had another kernel panic.

That was a while ago, though, maybe under 10.1.x.

Almost anything would cause a kernel panic under 10.1.x. :D By the time we're up to 10.5.x, we'll be extremely stable. Can I wait that long?

I'm just glad I'm not dealing with Mac OS 9.x still.

Funny; when I got my G5 I got one kernel panic very early on (which in my case I'm positive was related to a funky Firewire drive), and haven't seen a single one since then.

Were it my computer, I probably wouldn't panic (pardon the pun) quite yet--it's possible there was some sort of first-time initilization with the network that went awry the first time it tried, but it will work every single time from now on--the fact that it was on "first boot" and never since makes me think that might be the case (or something static related after shipping, who knows). If it happens again, though, I'd start to worry.

Well, it wouldn't stop crashing on me. Every 15 minutes.. driving me nuts. Called Apple Support.. Restored OS.. nothing.. did the hardware chech.. all fine.. still getting Kernel Panics, frozen beachballs all over the place..

Tech support said it was DOA.. im waiting for sales support to call me tomorrow to arrange replacement.. hopefully it won't take long..

Im in Canada.. Im a student, and I am computerless until it shows up!!
