I came across an ad on craigslist for a VCR that has a European plug. I've been looking for a PAL compatible vcr as I sometimes find PAL videos in thrift stores and the seller said it plays both PAL and NTSC formats. Is this true? Also, is there an adaptor for a german plug vcr to adapt to US type outlets?

Can a PAL VCR play on a NTSC TV?

I did some research and I don't think a PAL VCR can play on an NTSC without a converter box.

Duff-Man says....it was a long time ago - back in the 80's - but a friend of mine bought a pal/ntsc/secam system. He needed to buy both the VCR and the TV...oh yeah!

Yeah, you would definitely need some sort of converter, which might be built into the device. PAL video is 720x576 at 25 frames per second interlaced, while NTSC is 720x486 (at it's highest, 480 normally) at 30 frames per second interlaced. Two different resolutions and two different frame rates. Would definitely take a specialized piece of equipment.
