Does anyone use either the beats by dre headphones or the new tour beats by dre? I'm thinking about purchasing one or the other, but both are pretty pricey. Does anyone know if theyre worth it compared to other headphones?

i believe the only good about them and the reason they're so expensive is they are enameled with colorware

I heard that the sound quality from the Dre Beats are actually very good but the build quality feels cheap.

I am blown away that somebody would pay $350 for these, when there are much MUCH better options out there. You can get the legendary, time tested, sennheiser HD-600's for about $290

I just bought the Beats By Dre yesterday after owning the Sennheiser HD 380 Pro and HD 595. Both of these cost $200-300 depending on where you buy them from. I bought the Beats By Dre for $300cdn taxes in.
So...after hearing about how overpriced, horrible sounding these are what did I think? Well I came to the conclusion that most people that actually downplay these headphones simply haven't owned them. They may have tried it at the Apple Store and automatically assumed that they don't compete with their AKG's, Beyers, or Sennheisers. Audiophiles typically buy headphones and then let them burn in with their setup for 100+ hours, yet for the Beats By Dre, nearly everyone on Head-Fi assumed they were trash.
They were wrong.
I listen to mainly rap music. The Beats deliver lows that you couldn't possibly imagine. I can feel actual levels of the bass and it's not distorted or over exaggerated at all. There is a clear extension and phenomenal detail in the lows. For bass, it's just no competition. My Total Bithead Amp helps the Senns in bass, but it still can't compete with the Beats by Dre, unamped.
In MOST songs, I found the highs to be superior. There were some exceptions in songs where it was more classical type of music, but I found that the vast majority of my songs presented better highs with the Beats By Dre.
Mids? Generally, I found the HD 595's to be superior in this category. The mids are definitely more noticeable and detailed in the 595's over the Beats By Dre. Not to say the Beats By Dre aren't desirable, but they're somewhat inferior to the 595's in terms of mids.
Soundstage: This is the the one place where the Beats By Dre lacked. Because my HD 595's are open ended headphones, there is definitely a wider soundstage present. This isn't anything due to the quality of the Beats By Dre. It's a closed headphones vs. opened one. The soundstage in the open one will always be superior. However, the Beats By Dre did have a similar soundstage as the HD 380's.
Noise cancellation. Many people don't need this, but I find it particularly useful in certain conditions. I've turned them up all the way and hear no "hiss". Even in environments where I'm alone, I still prefer the noise cancellation. The HD 595's are horrible in this sense. I can hear everything! The fan around me, the kids playing outside, my fingers typing on the keyboard, my finger clicking on the mouse. Beats By Dre: Just solely my music being heard.
To conclude, shop around first. Listen to Sennheiser's, AKG's, Grados, Beyerdynamics. They are all excellent options. Don't believe everything you read online. Your ears should be the ultimate icebreaker in your decision. Just make sure you're listening to high bitrate music. Most high end headphones have a tendency to really bring out and make noticeable when a song isn't encoded well.
I hear they're more overrated than Bose. That is saying quite a bit.
I've heard that too, and then went out and bought a pair. They're not...

I own a pair of these just bought them today, first off what is up with the annoying clicking sound that they make? it's about driving me insane!
The sound is nice don't get me wrong but I have Bose that cost half it's price and give me the same SQ without the need for batteries. OR the damn clicking! ugggh
Also, IMO these are a tad TOO pretty. The glossy surface looks like crap after a few hours of touching and moving and adjusting. I can see where the scratches will become abundant in a few more weeks of use
....and this clicking!!!! arrrgh!!!

My wife and I are looking for some new headphones and came across the Dr. Dre's at Bestbuy.
Putting the ridiculous decibel factor aside (there was no volume control on the station???), the sound quality was the best we heard going through the extensive selection there. Put everything to shame we tested them against.
Now, as far as the price goes, they're too rich for my blood, but if I had some extra cash laying around I wouldn't hesitate picking a pair up.
EDIT: That said, I would really like to test them out on music I listen to, as opposed to store picked tunes. Also, I remember them being very comfortable, not squeezing/pinching my ears or head.

I have the Tours and I think they are great!!
I cant give as detailed a review like aaquib did but I can say there were many things in his post that I totally agree with.
As far as noise cancellation- I hear absolutely nothing other than the music. I don't hear the dog, cat, typing, nothing!! If either of my pets need my attention, they know how to get it. :)
I also feel the bass in these things is phenomenal!!
I also believe that people who are so quick to down the beats either don't have their own or are going by what others who also don't have them have to say. It only takes one person to say something negative before 100 more climb on the bandwagon.

I'm not sure about climbing on the bandwagon, I recently spent a night with a borrowed pair of the Studios, my thoughts don't change. If I had to buy noise-canceling take these over the Bose in a heartbeat, but compared to some of the other alternatives.

i do not own a pair, but i have tried them on because friends have them
i would personally pick bose over the dre's because bose do not leak music
the sound quality on the dre's is very good, but not worth $300
the only reason is because of the looks and that dre sponsers them
i would wait for the dr dre hd solos

I've actually been looking at getting the beats once I tried them at Best Buy. I really want the solo's mainly because of the price difference and I like the in-line mic. Can anyone speak from experience on using these?

Hi !
Sharing my experience.
I have tried the beat monsters and they are awesome but in some songs feel as if the pitch/mid tones is not crystal clear. But despite that they are very good compared to lot of headphone from "other premium brands".
I was at a shop run by a music lover who had tried every headphone and could find just the right one when you told him what's missing in the set that you are testing... and then he recommended a cheap PC video and voice call looking plasticy seinhisser (sorry for the spelling) which were more expensive, half as good looking but handled the gap in crystal pitch and high frequencies ( like glass shatteing with the perfect notes) It was beats + the missng link ! I was shcoked at the looks of this ugly seinhisser but the sound quality was really great.
I finally tried the Monster Turbines and Turbine Pro's and bought the turbines, wow ! what sound (for my taste).
Turbine Pro were even more awesome but for me the price gap didn't justify the incremental sound improvement between the turbine and turbine pro.
Hope this helps.

I have a pair of the black Dr. Dre Beats Solo and overall, I'm very satisfied with them. I picked them up for $160 with shipping on Amazon - $20/$30 cheaper than than you'll find in stores. I'm far from what you'd call an audiophile, but I have to say they'll pretty impressive! I don't listen to a lot of rap or hip hop but tested these extensively with bass-heavy music and I was able to hear the music with a much deeper clarity...also, they deliver pretty good highs so they sound good with other genres as well. I wanted something for home use and for travel purposes & something that I can use with my iPhone or macbook. The built-in control talk function is pretty neat and make these headphones even more versatile. Final verdict: for the price alone I give these an 8/10. Not bad

And you can get 20% off if you used the code, "SWAGSYNDICATE", without the quotes at the check by entering it into the repcode slot.

They're good, but for the price, they honestly suck. The build quality is terrible. After over-paying for a product, one would expect good construction. It is very flimsy and prone to snapping like most of the display models I have seen. You're paying for the brand, and Monster is the devil with prices, as seen with their cables.

I have Solo HD Beats by Dr Dre, Studio Beats by Dr Dre, , P5 Bowers and Wilkins, and Bose Quiet Comfort 15. I also have Apple In ear earphones, Vmoda remix, Bose IE2, and Tours Beats by Dr Dre. I will provide pictures if people deem I am a troll. No, these are not fakes, I bought EVERY single one of these at the Apple store.
To be honest, the Studios are OK, but not for the price. I would pay maximum $150 on those. The Solo HD's would be nice at maybe $50 cheaper. The tours (in ears) are my favourite earphones, as I listen to mostly pop,r&b, electro songs. I also own a pair of Apple In ear Earphones, and I can tell the difference. I would rather have the Tours.
The Bose quiet comfort 15's are excellent for travel. They noise cancel so well, its really scary. The sound quality is not so well..the Beats IN MY OPINION sound better. The bass on them is just horrible. If you take off the QC15's, you can hear how awful it is.
The BEST headphones in my opinion is the P5 Bowers & Wilkins. The quality is noticeably different then the Studios and QC15's, the bass is good when it needs to be, and quiet when it needs to be. They fit very comfortably, and I don't think they would break as easily.
If you want Beats for sure, go with the Solo HD Beats by Dr Dre GRAPHITE edition, as I have that one and it is truly an eye turner. People always ask me if I get them customized at colorware and I say no.

I actually ended up getting the Solo HDs and I love them. The build quality should be better, but it's ok. They are overpriced in the name of style and you have to be ok with that. I love the way they look and sound so I think they were worth it.

Sennheiser HD280's are definitely the best around the ear headphones you can buy for less than $150. Check out any major audiophile website/forum (head-fi.org) and you'll find that's the general consensus.

anyone who says the dre studios suck is ****ing wrong
i am a music LOVER. i LIVE and breathe music. there isnt a day that goes by where i dont listen to music for at LEAST 3 hours.
i was torn between bose and the dre studios and thought that the studios had better quality.
sound quality is ****ing crisp. amazing. amazing bass. it's just incredible.
now i will admit that the noise cancelling is NOT as good as the bose and the sound leakage is a major problem.
but at the end of the day i want the best sound quality possible. studio beats can do this. i love it.

I know there have been lots of replies. Anyone who says they're a professional and recommends beats is lying. Beats are pretty, and expensive, and for that price, you can do a lot better.
If you're going to get the ear phone version, I recommend the Sennheiser CX 300 II. Sennheisers are an industry standard.
I personally have Audio Technica A700s which are over ear, and have GORGEOUS sound quality.

...you could use that argument with any :apple: product you have also...:p
That poster likes his/her "beats"... I got a pair of the $299 model when they were on a midnight madness sale for $125 and even at that price I couldn't convince myself to be able to keep the beats = they went back after 8 business days of trying to like them...
I have Bose, Sennheiser, Panasonic, Sony, JVC, Apple, Audiotechnica, Klipsch, etc... and I use them all for different moods/music that I'm in or activities I'm doing...

I'm not trying to sound like an audio expert but I'm gonna try to break it down...
First off, the Studio Beats is the only headphone I'm going to rate in the dre selection as it is the only headphone I've had experience with and have owned them for quite a while.
Price: 350 give or take depending on where you buy them
Pros: Unmatched BASS for the price your paying.
Great quality sound for Trance/ Rap/ Pop/ Techno (Bass/ Melodic music)
Cons: PLASTIC
Enhanced sound (meaning you are listening to a tuned up version of any song automatically not necessarily a con but for audiophiles this is not wanted)
Slightly uncomfortable as the headphones cup your ears
Batteries
I've recently purchased the Bowers and Wilkins P5s and here's its breakdown:
Price: 300 give or take
Pros: Real sound (You feel like you are in the studio with the artists or sitting front row at a concert)
Much better delivery of classical / jazz/ vocals (instrument based music)
THey feel expensive :P Materials used is real calf skin leather, stainless steel, brushed aluminum
Microphone
Slimmer than the beats
Sexier headphones (beats are cooler these are sexier :P)
No batteries (This should be standard but is a necessary mention since beats are batteried)
more comfortable and ergonomic on the head
CONS: Bass is decent not as good as the beats
uncomfortable around the neck
attracts too much attention :P
Basically it is a matter of your taste in music if you enjoy more upbeat music go for the BEATS as it delivers only in that department and is marketed that way if you wanna listen to a wider range of music go for the P5.
P.S any body who enjoys listening to music H*GH needs to listen to Apologize by one republic (the version without timbaland) with the Beats its pretty EPIC

I'm sure you can find much better for the money, but I have the Beats by Dr. Dre Pro's and I love them. I previously had the Studios and the Solo's. The Solo's killed my ears where I wear glasses and they set on your ear, and the Studios' build quality was pretty cheap feeling. Anyways..If you dig heavy bass go with the brand.

I tested the Beats by Dre Studio at Best Buy last weekend and I have to say, the sound was amazing, and the build quality was exceptional! By far, they are the best headphones that I have come across. Yes, the price seems a bit out of control, but if you spend a lot of time listening to music and need a great set a headphones, then you should be able to justify shelling out the cash for a great set of cans!

Just ordered a pair of white studio's for $200+ $40 squaretrade warranty off amazon. It is listed as $254, but I had a $50 gift card that I cashed in.
I think i'll be happy with them. I know, i know, they are not the best sound for the price. But some of the other headphones at that level are downright ugly and I wouldn't be caught dead in public rocking out to those. I have heard that these aren't sturdy at all - my friend has gone through 8 - read *EIGHT* Studios/Solos in the last year or two alone, but I am much much MUCH more careful than he is. I got a 2 year warranty with accident protection JIC.
In the end I am a casual listener, these look good, sound pretty damn awesome (i'm no audiophile, but these sound good to me), and should meet my needs perfectly. Maybe I paid too much for em, but considering their list price was around $400 a year or so ago, I think I am okay with forking over 200 for these.

The sound quality is not worth the price. I have herd them and was highly disappointed by what I got back. I would suggest that if you're serious about buying some good quality headphones, head over to
www.head-fi.org
And educate yourself; it's a very, very detailed process if you want to get the BEST for your money. FYI you're more than likely to have to order online if you want something good but there is an entire ecosystem of great audio hardware out there that ranges from 30 to 500 bucks and if you're into casual or experienced listening/monitoring, it would behoove you to read :)

It's killing me to see you buy these for 200 man; it's great that you like the look but at the end of the day the sound quality is what counts right? Of course you want them to look good; what genres of music do you listen to? There's also the entire IEM route that you could go to; you could definitely snag a pair of Triple Fi 10s if you're into IEMs that would sound twice as good as the studios for (probably) cheaper.

The beats aren't worth more than 100 bucks. If you want to spend around a hundred go get some Audio Technica M50s.
However if anyone's serious about buying some headphones or something and they want a good value, they should head over to head-fi and definitely take some time and read and educate themselves.
Finding the right pair of headphones for you based on your genres of music, listening styles, isolation, fit, and source (ipod, computer, etc.) takes time and a little bit of effort. If done right though the payout is amazing.

Best bang for your buck for extra bass headphones are the XB500 from Sony... I moved up to the XB700 but the bass isn't nearly as crazy on those.
Check them out if you get a chance... this isn't to anyone one in particular... I just find the Beats overpriced.

Personally, it depends on what you wish to listen to. Personally, I would NOT go with the Dr. Dre Beats. It's true that the bass has a deep and satisfying sound to it, which makes it great for casual listening, especially to bass-intensive songs and genres. Drums 'n' Bass, Club, Techno, and Rap sound great with them. The noise cancellation works wonders, they're fairly portable, and they come packaged with several goodies.
The bass is also a problem though: The mids are mediocre and drowned out. Quiet acoustic pieces, orchestras, and ambience sounds unnatural, and even lacking. As a composer, I much prefer a natural flat-line sound... I enjoy listening to songs the way the mixer intended you to hear them. They REQUIRE batteries; It isn't optional. Their built quality is plastic, which is very worrying. My final complaint is the price: You can get professional headphones for $350.
I personally went with the Beyer Dynamic 990 DT Pro. Now, this is probably overkill for you. However, not only are they the most comfortable headphones I have had the pleasure to wear, they are PERFECTLY balanced. And they're the same price, $350 ($179 on eBay last I checked). Is that what you're looking for? Perhaps not. Again, it comes down to preference: A lot of people ENJOY bass-heavy speakers/headphones, even if they sound unnatural. Should you go with Beats? They sound very good, but I'm unconvinced they're worth $350. At that price, there should be nothing wrong with them, and their build quality and requirement for batteries kills it for me.
While I don't have as much of an understanding about audio equipment as an audiophile, I have an understanding of the equipment as a composer: That's why I went with a different pair, and I could not be more satisfied with what I choose. Whatever you go with, I wish the best experience with them. They will hopefully last you for years to come.

Well I'm against those phones in general, but what types of music do you listen to? Each headphone has a specific sound signature that makes it sound "better" for some genres of music. For instance if you're listening to metal, rock, hardcore, alternative, vocal, etc you'd get some Grados.
For hip hop and everything else, I'd go with some AT50s. Of course that's just me. I used to be in the high end portable audio scene a year or so ago and of course new headphones have come out since then (I'm talking about 250 and up here) but there are a plethora of actually GOOD headphones around 100 bucks that beat the crap out of mainstream Beats, Bose (All Bose products suck for the price BTW), and others.
If you want to educate yourself about anything related to audio, go over to Head-Fi.org and create an account and surf the forums. There is a wealth of information there that ranges from phones under 100 to complete setups over 1000.

I finally tried a pair of Beats in-store at Apple. They were the Studios. I could not have been less impressed with them. The bass sounded muddy and congested. Yes, there was lots of bass but it sounded horrible.
I would not buy these headphones at any price. Seriously, they made me not want to listen to music that I normally enjoy.
For me, Beats = Over-rated
YMMV,

that's what I'm talking about. They try to sell you on the brand instead of the quality. Sometimes I want to work at a Bose store or best buy so I could tell people how bad the headphones are. They aren't worth more than 50 bucks, if that.
If anyone is looking for some real advice our just wondering where to start, I've been in the hobby for years and have owned tens of headphones from 100 to 500. Drop me a pm, if be glad to help.

First and foremost I am a show that spins at local night clubs in the new jersey new York area. I needed a good pair of head phone that would let me hear the lows and the highs and the mids like I would hear in the studio while mixing tracks. I also wanted something thy would keep the noise out while spinning. Also I was looking for something durable light weight and could take punishment not scratch and last me a while. Well guys I FOUND THE PERFECT HEAD PHONE. Beats By Dre is the head phones for me because it covers every thing that I was looking for and is durable made very well they are not plastic they are made from aluminum and will last forever. So I went and bought the black ones and loved them do much I went back and got the white ones and red ones to match my different out fits. I will always stay loyal to doc Dre beats because he know what true studio quality sound is like. Buy one or by them all you want be disappointed. Also you get a carrying case that comes inside that package and you also get to cord jacks one come with the volume up down integrated in and also has a mic because you can answer phone calls I you want while your listening to music. Good luck guys

I owned the tour pros and ibeats. Both crapped out in 6 months time. Went with audio technica's ATH-m50 and am very satisfied at half the cost

i would try to go to some headphone forums and check out the reviews of many other cans before you decide. of course nothing is like trying on headphones for yourself since everyone hears a bit differently and whats good to one person might not be good for another. to me the new sony deep bass headphones i listened to sounded pretty good for how cheap they were ($100). compared to the dre beats (dont remember which model) at best buy and was not impressed at all.
i do know that there are alot of counterfeit dre headphones sold on ebay and craigslist, so be careful. i wish i remembered the site but they compared the fake ones to the rea ones.l

Sound is very subjective... what will sound good to one person might sound harsh/terrible to another....
Personally, I have tried the monster headphones and like their cables... terrible.
People seem to think that More Bass = Sound Quality... NO! They have terrible powered EQ's that mess with the sound and cannot be turned off, basically it's like jacking up the Bass dial on your amplifier.
Plus you see all the skally's walking around with them on their necks just waiting to be throttled.

I always had Bose. I used to get them because I did not know much but the sound was not as great but noise canceling was ok. Also quite comfortable to wear on a long flight.
Recently I found Bowers & Wilkins P5 at an Apple Store and those were great. Well built too. I am not an audiophile and really don't understand the terms or finer details but to me these sounded far far better than Bose.
Here is the link from Amazon. I don't know if these are ever on sale, maybe someone can tell us.

Alright. here's the truth guys. They may sound good to you if you are used to the crappy apple ear buds that you have lying around. However, if you have ever had a good pair of headphones (eg. Sony MDR-V6), then they will sound like garbage. The sound is unbalanced and just sounds plain wrong. I bought my girlfriend some Solo HDs only because I got a really, really good price on them, but honestly my $70 MDR-V6's sound much nicer. They have more bass and sound much more balanced.
So here it is, if you are looking for fashion, then fine, buy the beats. If you are the kind of person that wears them around your neck all the time in public to look super-fly, then that's cool. I'm not going to say that there's anything wrong with that, but recognize that you are giving up some performance for the aesthetics. If you don't plan on wearing them in public or care about image, then DO NOT buy the beats. If you are not into the fashion, then there is absolutely NO reason to buy the beats. You can get much better sound and bass from headphones that cost 3x less.
A really good pair for ~$100 is the Sony MDR-V6 or the Sennheiser HD-280 or HD-448
A little more pricy is Audio-Technica ATH-M50 at about $160.
I'm assuming that you are not an Audiophile, so based on that I would say that you don't need to spend more than $100 unless you really want to. My Sony MDR-V6's that cost only $70 still blow me away everytime I listen to them. I've tried $300 headphones and the difference is almost imperceptible, especially if you don't listen to HIGH quality audio such as FLAC or 320kbps.

What an obvious SHILL. Watch for fake reviews guys. This person just joined and this is his only comment. Who says this, "I will always stay loyal to doc Dre beats because he know what true studio quality sound is like"???

All sound reception is subjective and depends on a host of factors, the best advice is to get off your butt and go do some back to back testing with music you really know well... not from an iPod but from a good high quality source. I have a pair of 25-year old Sony MDR-V7 studio monitors that are still sweet and comfortable for many hours of listening. My more recent purchase of MDR-V700 are not nearly so comfortable, thought eh sound is ok. For quality listening, I have Shure earbuds: SES535. Expensive, but, to my ears, they are superb. I also like the B&W cans. But I cannot emphasize enough how you need to do back to back testing using a quality source. iPods, even with AAC encoding just aren't good enough quality wise to objectively differentiate the sound quality. As with speakers, it is down to taste, environment and budget. Quad electrostatics do it for me, but I don't listen to rap music... etc...:)
