I'd like to see a Blu-Ray put into the AppleTV (which, once again, would probably never happen).
The :apple:TV does a few things going for it on the blu-ray front.
It already has HDMI so a couple of fees are built-in to start.
the other half of equation is the content control encryption.
which it already handles in iTunes content. Plus the nVidia chips it would use also deliver some handy tools in that front as well.
It's a sealed device (well sort of) even if it runs o OS X it's unique build so it makes a idea test bed.
Plus they only need to pay the fees on this one device. So they only have to pay up for the customers who want it.
It's a much smaller "world of hurt", although that comment seemed political, so who knows what may have happened in the background.

If they're planning on building a display into the bottom of the Mac Mini to display downward and have the Apple on top be translucent to catch the LED backlight of the display, then sure, this will happen.
I don't care about no stinkin' optical drives, ports, or whether or not they actually make the Mini a usable computer.
As long as it has the glowing apple.
Dell seems to care...

The Dell seems to be very rich on stats, so the best way Apple can beat them, besides the obvious user ease of OSX as we all know, is to bring down the price close to theirs.
I don't think Apple can do Dell's $449 and have that many features and ports. But if the Mac mini, or new one, had to have a couple less ports than the Dell, and a slightly smaller hard drive than the Dell, I would pay $449 for the Mac instead of the Dell mini with all their features/ports for the same price.
I am thinking Apple would go $549 if they had the same stats as the Dell, and matched it port for port. That Dell is sure loaded for such a small machine. That Dell is really hard to beat as far as value for dollar goes. But if Apple wants to score a knockout punch, go dollar for dollar.

That Dell studio hybrid has
1) Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
2) The 449 doesn't have C2D
So which those update, Apple would have reason to price it at 599. But their ports would likely never match Dell's
I'd love a 499 or 449 model, but I doubt it....see this is Apple.

maybe "slightly" smaller at $449 with similar specs to now, and higher specs for $549
i love my mini
That be interesting.
Drop the older mini down(hopefully with the graphics on the current white MacBook, because the Mini is a few updates behind...maybe an HDD upgrade and clock update)
But 549 seems low.....599 or 699...the MacBook is 1299

It has 2gb ram and Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Drive unlike the mini
You can go up to a core 2 for $50
It has fire wire , hdmi, s/p dif.

They are a shockingly nice looking computer for a dell. But, when you look at the details it is not as good as the mini. Hopefully upgraded internals and a refreshed design will come to the mini soon and it will trounce the Dell!

They are very ugly but I read on Engadget they would resemble the shape of a Time Capsule, with the lip and the little indent all the way around, yadda - the first image.

Dell's computer has Windows Media Center, which is infinitely better than any similar software that runs on OS X. That alone will be enough to get lots of people to buy it.

But you can get alternatives for both os-x and windows for that matter. Yes media center is better than frontrow but it isn't the only option out there.
media central springs to mind for os-x and to be honest (specs aside) the mac mini looks more media centre orientated than the dell in my opinion and if you really wanted to you could always use windows on the mac mini :).
As to the design - I could quite easily see the design being the 'time capsule' style indent approach. A nice solid slab of metal for the lower section, a metal lid and a simple indent where the heat is allowed to escape from. Probably notch the price up a bit though.

This really does make sense to me. Forget blu-ray in the laptops, etc. and put blu-ray play back in the :apple:TV. Add builtin Hulu, Joost and Netflix support (available now through aTV) and I think this would really take off.

Based on a MBA Superdrive, made out of Aluminium, clean front except for the Slot, Glowing Apple Logo (I Know its upside down), Keeps the current lift off hood idea of the Mac Mini, making it hard to service. I Toyed with the idea of Beveled edges, but the iMac doesnt have them, and it looked wrong. It's just abit thinner and smaller overall than the Mac Mini, smaller footprint.

i don't think there is a chance you'll see the glowing apple make it on the mini, the only reason it's on the laptops is cause it's light coming off the displays.
..at least thats what i always assumed since the brightness of the logo adjusts with the display.

Yeah it is just the backlight, or atleast is attached to the brightness control of the backlight, but i still think it will be added, maybe as a status indicator (Not sure what it would indicate other than on and off, which could be done with one colour)

Also kinda cool. Similar to the present one, but enough of a differentiation to show it is the new one. I don't mind either and hope it is something similar. I don't think the mini needs colours the way the dell does. Makes it seem somewhat cheap in my eyes.

Go back a few months and read my comments after the conference call where Jobs clearly stated that Apple caters only to a certain segment of the market and folks like me and you are clearly not part of that segment.
I called his remarks arrogant then and I still stand behind my comments today. Apple has made billions and no longer needs a Mini switch box which was never intended to be a long term mid rage solution. Everyone needs to wake up and finally realize that Apple products are not market to the average Joe on a budget. The Mini allowed people to taste the good life but now that its gone John Doe realize they cant really afford the good life.
It was a teaser box only meant to hook you into buying the higher price tags items once you had the Apple fever.

Not a missed opportunity at all its all about corporate greed they don't need your Mini money. The Apple corporation is sitting on billions thanks to the iPhone and other products. Remember the very first iPhone which cost something like $500 or more I think.
This is exactly what happens when a corporation get's to the stage where they are today. They dont give a damn about a Mini.

I think you might be jumping the gun a little there. For sure, we expected the mini to be announced at MW, but Apple has long hinted that MW is not that important anymore. Besides, there's the reported hooks in OS X for an updated mini and (unofficial) word from Apple not to lose hope on the mini. They didn't announce the expected iMac update either, do you think that that means they're canning the iMac?
Personally, I think it's more of a reflection that Apple will now announce new products only on it's own timescale, not IDG's. I'm not too bothered if they delay the release of the mini until Snow Leopard is closer to shipping. Both together in Feb/March would be sweet.

Stack-a-Mac
The Stack-a-Mac is a modular computer system consisting of the base unit and several concentric toruses of varying sizes. Each torus, or Media Module, is designed to attach to additional toruses both on top and underneath. Connected ports allow for shared hard disk space and added functionality. The heart of the system, the Stack-a-Mac Base Unit, houses a Mac Mini, serves as a cooling tower for attached devices, and houses a blu-ray drive. The largest torus houses a WiFi transmitter and a shared hard drive. The uppermost torus, formerly known as the AppleTV, contains an iPod/iPhone dock.

There's also two other things (maybe even three or four):
1. iLife '09 isn't ready (only a few more weeks)
2. there is rumors of heat problems with the nVidia 9400M
3. Apple could be waiting for the new mobile i7 processors (or whatever they're called)
4. Apple could also be waiting to have Snow Leopard ready, since Leopard is a significant part of the cost of a Mac mini, if bought separately (i.e. people who can only buy a 600$ Mac mini will be pissed at Apple if a new version of the OS, at 130$, comes out 3 or 4 months later).
So while there is a chance of seeing the new Mac mini at the end of the month, it's still not 100% sure (just like it wasn't 100% sure for a MacWorld launch).

I really don't think Apple cares about that stuff. If Apple cared about us, they'd have released a new Mac mini at least six months ago. It's the $1299-plus sales they care about and then they hope to sell the new OS when it comes out a few months later.

Apple released the aluminum iMac a little over a month before Leopard came out. There was no free update program. They don't care. Doing it without the new OS just means more money for them.

Well okay then, if the CPU update and Snow Leopard are out as things holding back the launch of the new Mac mini, then maybe iLife '09 is the only thing. Unless the rumors about the 9400M over-heating are true.
At this point, who knows. Except people working at Apple, of course.

My stackable Mac Mini mockup. Stacks go under the top "lip". They lock in and stay secure when they're being moved about. Unlocking a stack will immediately shut down the Mac mini before it can do any damage. (you have to unlock a stack before you can take it out, and you cannot unlock and take a stack out before the mini turns off). There will be a warning label on the back of each stack.
The bottom stack could be thicker depending on the components inside. But in this case, thin is good, because the attachable stacks could be a reasonably large size.

Good effort there. I like the looks of the base Mac Mini you made.
The same way the Dell I'm using right now has a special dock interface, it should be possible to "daisy chain" the stackable components until they eventually reach the motherboard.
Now of course we have to admit that the same goal has been reached using a cheaper and more basic solution, which is to have a big box and fitting standard components in it, even if some users will not ever use the expansion slots inside the case.

I'm looking to replace the g5 that my wife and kids use everyday. I don't see a macbook being a good fit in that scenario. Besides, I don't think they're really going to like going down to a 13 or 15 inch screen from the 30 inch they use now. A new mini that can drive the 30" is just the ticket for me. :)

MagSafe on a desktop machine?
Don't be daft. The whole point in MagSafe is so when someone trips over the cord, it disconnects preventing your laptop shooting over the table.
You really think you'd want your Mac Mini turning off because the power cable got pulled out while you were unplugging a USB device?well they could add a button-like lock on it so you wouldn't accidentally unplug it.

About the MagSafe vs the current Mac mini power connector topic:
I have both a Mac mini G4 and a Mac mini Core 2 Duo, and my brother has a white MacBook (Core 2 Duo with a MagSafe power connector).
I can assure you that the MagSafe connector holds the power cable a lot better than the current Mac mini power connectors.
So either both my Mac minis have a weak connector and/or my brother has a stronger-than-usual MagSafe connector or people complaining about MagSafe have never even pulled a Mac mini power cable from its socket.

Apple released the aluminum iMac a little over a month before Leopard came out. There was no free update program. They don't care. Doing it without the new OS just means more money for them.
IIRC, the redesigned iMac came out in mid-August and Leopard came out in late October. About two and a half months if I'm counting correctly.
Point I'm trying to make is, That was a reasonable amount of time for the release of a new OS. Apple could indeed be waiting.

Was it that long? I guess it was...
But there's the thing; they didn't wait then, so why would they wait now?

My stackable Mac Mini mockup. Stacks go under the top "lip". They lock in and stay secure when they're being moved about. Unlocking a stack will immediately shut down the Mac mini before it can do any damage. (you have to unlock a stack before you can take it out, and you cannot unlock and take a stack out before the mini turns off). There will be a warning label on the back of each stack.
The bottom stack could be thicker depending on the components inside. But in this case, thin is good, because the attachable stacks could be a reasonably large size.
The stack idea actually isn't that bad. And as anyone may know I HATE mockups. But that one smells of circa 2003-4 Apple innovation.
Too bad it's not 2004 anymore, and Apple will never be that innovative ever again. Especially when it comes to giving users what they want.... options.
p.s. They could make the top stack in a pro version that gives users quad core for the first time in an Apple computer that doesn't cost $2000 or more.

I would be so happy if the new mac mini didnt have a CD drive!!
Well I wouldn't, my old one is plugged into the TV and acts as a media hub, web tv and dvd player. Just waiting on the refresh to replace it... no cd/dvd drive = no sale.

They might do the same as the MB Air, plug-in external CD/DVD drive (maybe Blu-Ray later?).

If Apple were going to have another big commercial for the Superbowl, might they not release something, like new iMac and new Mac Mini, a few days ahead of time. Like, say: Tuesday.

What's the advertising law like this time round - would they have to have had a previous ad out, to qualify for SuperBowl ad time?

Nope, it will just be a new "I am a Mac" ad related to the superbowl in typical cheezy commercial fashion.
