View Full Version : Any way to stay signed on AIM?

I have a 3G with the software update. In the past somebody had told me that you can stay signed on with the AIM even after you close/minimize/exit/whatever it. This doesn't work for me though, at least I don't think. Everytime I open the app it says "reconnecting" which I'm assuming means that it hadn't been signed on.
Is this normal, or is it supposed to stay signed on?
Thanks

Nope. Non-Apple App Store apps don't run in the background.
Jailbroken apps can.

That's normal, check your Aim settings in settings.ipa

Palringo has an AIM add on and keeps you signed in even after you close it.

Palringo and Beejive both have options that keep you signed in. With Beejive if you get an IM while program is closed you will receive an email notification. I'm not sure if Palringo does same.
Other then that if your iphone is jailbroken you can use something like background that lets you run apps in the background although when I tried a couple months ago it wasn't so great.

When AIM "reconnects" the IM should be delivered to your handset. This feature isn't terribly practical to stay signed on over long periods of time, but is helpful when you're moving through different apps on the iPhone.

This feature should be enhanced when the add the advanced "notification" feature in the future. I hope.

MobileChat also does this, and can send e-mail notifications for new messages.

So can someone give a confirming answer to the OP's question regarding AIM (not beejive or palringo)
- When you go to the homescreen does AIM stay signed in?
- If it does stay signed it, does it notify you if you get an IM?

I've been wondering the same thing... every time I open the app (I use aol's AIM app) it says reconnecting. What I care about though is whether my friends see me constantly logging in and out or not.
FYI, the app doesn't need to run in the background. Your status can easily be saved online, so that it says you're on even when you're not.

The app should leave the user signed in. If you have another AIM account, you can verify this by checking the status from that, or even via a web-based status indicator. As for IM notifications, the app won't notify you in realtime as would occur with an SMS. When you open the app up however, AIM should push any IMs you've received to your handset. As others have mentioned, look for this to change when Apple releases notification support. Note: Visiting the AIM settings in your iPhone's settings panel, confirm that "Sign-off on Exit" is set to OFF. Otherwise, the app will indeed sign you off.

When I am signed on the AIM app and then exit the app, the app will leave me signed on AIM for about 5 minutes and then it just signs me off and I wont show up in my friends buddy list except for under the people signed off. I had a friend log onto AIM on their laptop to check. In the settings i picked for it to not sign me off at exit which it doesnt at exit but it does a few mins later.
