i just want to know which has the best overall performance ,
price is not an issue.

i've been loyal customer to seagate for the past 10 years, but i want to know how other brands performing now a days.
and it seems that the seagate 500GB is still "rare"

are there any 7200rpm 500GB ?
i don think so .

i need 500GB
and as far as i know there's only 5400 rpm available for that capacity for now.

they used to be on macsales.com but now they're gone. should be out in a week or so though. :)

THere aren't any 500g notebook drives @ 7200 rpm, only 5400. Go with the western digital.

The Samsung is okay and was a deal at Newegg weeks ago. I swapped in the 500 GB drive and started to load up the tunes, photos and videos. It is nice to not be constrained on space. And the drive makes no noise. Way too soon to have any opinion about reliability. This is in a Unibody MBP.

To the one who clicked on "Hitachi Travelstar", enjoy your failing drive. :)

I've had great experience with all of the manufactures. Actually, for most internal hardware I've never had a problem. RAM, hard drives, DVD-RW, etc have all worked exceptionally well!

Tom's hardware has some good reviews with some graphs for performance. Check it out

I am very happy with the Momentus 5400.6 500GB drive to replace the stock Hitachi Traverstar 250GB. The Seagate is about 2 Deg C cooler and 30-42% faster in Xbench. Zero vibration and totally silent.

Anxiously wanting for the Momentus 7200.4 version 500GB coming soon. :D

I was using WD for 6 years and now added Seagate to the mix. Never liked Hitachi, I got two units of 2.5 in that died on me. My 3.5inch drives are all WD.
New generation of Seagates just impressed me.
:)

Isn't that what I just said?

It's out. OWC has already sold out their first allotment.

Actually, you implied it could be found in the wild and I suspect that it hasn't shipped yet. It's out of stock at every vendor where it's listed - zipzoomfly, buy.com, etc. Do a google shopping search on the part number and all the vendors who have this product are out of stock or sold out (st9500420as). That's fairly normal behavior for products that aren't shipping yet.

That may be true - but its arrival is clearly impending and may be worth the wait. But considering Seagate's recent 1.5TB adventure, I'm not sure I'd want to be one of their "beta testers".

I'm wondering. Does the 7200 kill the battery quicker? Heat would increase like crazy in the case? and does the speed difference really translate into a better experience?
