View Full Version : Xmas Eve Disaster: I cracked my screen

Long story short, I was using it as a flashlight to keep myself and my 2yo from tripping on my in-laws' walkway, and it slipped out of my grip and fell right on a paver. Wah. :(

How much will it cost to repair/replace the screen at an Apple store?

Thanks

$250. Did you crack the screen or shatter the screen?

If you cracked it, I'd just suck it up. (I know it sucks, it happened to me... Sorry dude!) If you shattered it, I'm not sure if you could get another one for the same $199, or if it'd be cheaper to just replace the screen.

It's cracked, not shattered. I'll post a pic later after the above-mentioned 2 year old falls asleep.

I am SO bummed out. :(

Sorry to hear that. You can always just think of it adding character to the phone and now you'll have an interesting conversation piece when people see your screen. :D

Kinda playing fast and loose with the word "interesting."
10 brownie points if anyone can guess where that quote is from!

Sorry about that dude, but if you're in a good (financial) situation, get it replaced.

I'm sorry to hear about your mishap. I've had nightmares of myself cracking an iPhone screen. I would hate to have to actually live it in real life. Damn. If I were you, I'd order a refurbished 1st Gen iPhone or something.

Haha the "fast and loose" part is, but the entire thing is from Season 9 of Friends, I believe The One With the Party or something like that, when Charlie is first introduced because Ross is supposed to be giving a tour to two professors (one of them is Charlie, the other is boring.) The boring professor has a story to tell about what he's allergic to:

"...cashews, peanuts, walnuts..."
ROSS: "So basically ALL NUTS!"
Prof: "Interestingly, no."
Enter Charlie's line, quoted above.

Oh, and if you haven't noticed or guessed it by now: I'm a total Friends-pedia.

Here are some pics of the damage. That's the original iPhone. Would be cheaper to just upgrade to the 3G if you qualify for that.

it's a 3g
you can go to the closest Apple store and see if they make you pay for it or not.
if yes, someone on this forum posted a guide to changing the glass, probably on the original iPhone though, it should be easier on the 3g, so just mroogle that guide, buy a cheap glass on ebay as indicated in the guide, and find someone to change it for you, if you can't.
EDIT: found the how to (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=611012)

That's a black 3g.Ah, couldn't tell. So, mail your 3G to this place http://www.drcellphone.com/iphone-repair-service.php

They will fix it for $99.00, cheaper than having to pay $250.00 to replace the iPhone 3G or buying a new one.

what if they repair it for free at the Apple Store or make her pay 250 and let her keep the original that she can either fix and sell or just sell?
These are all possibilities, good luck to the OP

what if they repair it for free at the Apple StoreThen obviously she should let Apple fix it for free.

or make her pay 250 and let her keep the original that she can either fix and sell or just sell?I doubt that Apple would do that.

These are all possibilities, good luck to the OPI was only giving her one of the many advises that people gave to her. Are you going to reply to everybody's post about the other possibilities?

chill, I wasn't trying to be offensive, your option is one of the possibilities, but since there could be less demanding and cheaper options, I would personally keep the more expensive ones for last.

Did you have a cover on it?

If you didn't, are you KICKING yourself now that you didn't?

That sucks. I think it's a good $250 to replace. I could be wrong. Perhaps homeowners will cover it? Your deductible may be too high if you have it.
Good thing is the kid is ok. :)

I use a sleeve cover because I hate all the stay-on-it-all-the-time covers. And no, I'm not kicking myself. I still hate normal covers. They feel awful and make the phone too bulky for my tiny hands.

Also, I doubt a case would have protected it from a face-down fall onto pavers that aren't level, which is the reason I had it on and was using it as a flashlight.

But thanks for the helpful post. :)

SUE THE IN LAWS!!!!! XD IMHO I would ask if I could at least get reimbursed enough to buy a new iphone, and if the answer is no, SUE!!!!! When asking for reimbursement, think of any blackmail you can conjure up or bring back the time 20 years ago when you loaned them bail money that they never payed you back;)

I would if they were awful, but they're not. Le sigh.
