Same thing 3 cards from 3 different people none of them worked. Probably because the iTunes store is overloaded today.

figured it out - thanks all
looks like we tracked the problem to a 3 pack of iTunes giftcards from Target - none are working, so I think Target screwed up the activation. Guess my purchase of "Idiocracy" is going to have to wait until tomorrow 🙂

Christmas iTunes Gift Cards from Target
I also purchased a 3 pack of iTunes Gift Cards from Target. I still cannot get them to work and Apple will not help without proof of purchase which was tossed. Target won't help without a UPC number that was on the outer packaging. Does anyone have the UPC number or any ideas on how I can recoup my $30!
