I need to use L2TP/IPSEC VPN to connect to a client. The builtin VPN client isn't up for the task, as it doesn't have all the settings I need.
I'm connecting to a ZyXel ZyWall 10. Anyine done this and know what SW I need?

What L2TP settings do you need that OS X doesn't provide?

You might wanna try Cisco System's VPNClient.

I need to be able to adjust IKE Phase 1 and Phase 2 negotiation as well as PSK.
Sadly I can't get the Cisco client, as it's for betatesters only, which I'm not.

EDIT: Almost forgot NAT-T.

Thanks for taking the time to try to help, but both are based on the MS standard with MSCHAP authentication and username/password authentication.
This seems to be more of a problem than I initially thought.... :(
