to dowload from itunes must you have a credit card or does the vouchers do

i just got a new 8gb ipod touch for christmas but dont have a credit card as yet must i take out a account for a credit card or will a itunes voucher alone let me download apps from the itunes store on my ipod touch and can you set up a acount on itunes without a credit card and just the itunes card
