I'm looking to get a cheap mac for my mother to get her to switch.
Really out of pity she is running a PC with Windows ME!
What are you asking now for the G3?
Can this Mac run Panther? (with a larger hard drive)
Would you know if a "modern" graphics card can be installed?
Thanx
I.

125$ for the G3, I know additional cards can be installed, you can upgrade the ram as well, up to 512. I am not sure as the base requirements of panther. I know there is several processor upgrades available for it as well.

You can actually upgrade the RAM to 768 as I have done this to my Beige G3. You can run up to 10.2.8 on this natively but support for it was dropped with Panther (however, there is a program called XPostFacto that is supposedly pretty solid in allowing unsupported comps to run an unsupported OS).
Zip processor upgrades are fairly common and relatively inexpensive, however, for the cost of the comp, RAM and processor upgrade, you could probably get a B/W G3, Yikes! G4 or even a Sawtooth G4 for about the same cost. However, if this something you would like to do, two great places to find upgrades are www.otherworldcomputing.com and www.sonnettech.com.
A good video card upgrade is the 16 MB card that is found in the B/W G3. Also the Radeon 7000 Mac Edition is a popular choice.
One final bit of advice. One thing that gets overlooked in upgrading a Beige G3 is the HD data transfer rate. Stock it is around 17 MB/s which causes major bottle necks. It would be suggested to upgrade this with a product that Sonnet Tech carries called Tempo. It increases the data throughput from 4 to 8 times depending on the one you get.

That was very helpful information.
Now, I have to weigh the good and bad.
I would go the G3 iMac route but cannot upgrade. The powermac B&W G3's start a little higher because eveyone is upgrading them.
I'm not going to drop $700(eMac) on a comp for my Mother to surf the internet and write email.
But, I would like her to get into some of the iLife stuff. Ahhh!

Sonnet Tech does have an upgrade available for Rev. A-D iMacs (tray load CD-Rom/Bondi Blue & 5 Flavor styles) which gives you a 600 Mhz processor and a firewire port. On another post, a guy mentioned that he had an opportunity to score a Rev. A iMac for $60. It would not surprise me if similar deals can be found elsewhere if you look hard enough.
If upgradability is something you are looking at in an all in one package, Beige G3 AIO are fairly easy to find, has everything a Rev A-D iMac has plus the ability to upgrade and expandability with PCI slots. I was looking last night and there are quite a few on eBay ranging from $80-$150.00. An upgrade in RAM and perhaps a small processor bump and Jaguar, Safari, iTunes & iPhoto will run with no problems. iMovie will work but not real fast and I don't think iDVD is possible.
