i am buying a powerbook 15inch model and have the option of getting a airport extreme card for an extra $100, i know almost nothing about macs hardware compatibility for them, will that card work with my wireless 802.11g netgear dsl router?

As far as I am aware, yes it should work fine.

The Powerbooks have antenna built into the case. The Airport cards are specifically designed to fit into the Powerbooks and connect to the antenna. However this is not the real reason it costs more - see post above for that!
