I know this may sound ridiculous - but what is the first step in getting started to import my HF100 footage into imovie08? Should I install Canon software at all? Thanks.

Plug it in and press import. It is very easy. Dont install the canon software.

Yes, there's no need to install Canon's software. You can either:

connect the camcorder directly to your iMac using the supplied USB cable, or
eject the memory card card from the camcorder and use a USB card reader
The second option has the advantage of not having to faff about with the camcorder and its power supply on and around your desk.

Once connected, open iMovie '08, and the programme should detect the camcorder and open the import pane.

I second that, the best and fastest way is to use only the sd card from the hf100.

What kind of file does iMovie'08 create after you upload your AVCHD files up from your HF100?

I am interested because I am looking at the WD HD Media Player and want to make certain that the files created by iMovie will be in a format that is supported by this.

I appreciate the insight...

What kind of file does iMovie'08 create after you upload your AVCHD files up from your HF100?It transcodes the AVCHD clips to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) for editing use. What format you output to after editing is somewhat up to the user as iMovie provides a number of outputting options, among which QuickTime looms large.

thanks for your prompt reply.
I see WD HD Media Payer supports a lot of different file types so I think I will be purchasing one in short order....
